I'm probably his biggest critic on here, but he was fine today.

If he can continue to be 'fine' until Toth is back, it won't be a disaster.

He literally didn't make a save today.

True. Distribution was ok, positioning wasn't horrible.

If we can continue to protect him like that for most of the games he needs to play, we might be able to get by.

Pears did fine today but he was against a Eustace well oiled machine meaning all he had to do really was pick the ball out the net twice.

He'll not have a less pressured game all season the big test is on Friday night in 2 weeks.

He was mostly protected by the fact that Derby were ahead and sat back, more than because our defence actually did much though. Could get messy against Preston unless we get a few back. Could anyway.

Anyone seem the Millwall goal today ?

I think most keepers in this league have at least one rick a season in them.

True, but in the context of Pears, he has several major ricks in him each season.
Like, game-defining ricks.

Neither keeper had a save of note to make today ! Unfortunately, we still conceded two goals.

He's doing the job he was designed for as back up to a better keeper at this level.

If you want success in this league you need good back up in every key position but you have to pay the wages for it which this lot don't like doing.

It would be crazy to get rid of him this season no way is that number 3 kid anywhere near ready.

I bet he's earning more than Toth is.

Which is why they wanted him gone in summer.

They will no doubt try again in January, especially so if Pears does ok in Toths absence.  & if they succeed, then they will start with the low ball offers for Toths contract, which will fail, & "Greedy Toth" will be sold in the summer & replaced with another foreign punt.

Flip a coin, will we get another Toth or another Wahlstedt?

Which still won't be a lot in the grand scheme of things and he earned his wages on Friday.

Let's hope it continues and lets see the reaction on here when they've got rid and a ringer ends up between the sticks next time Toth is out.

Like or rate Pears or not the squad is stronger with him as backup compared to what it would've been had they moved him out. He shouldn't be that hard to replace but he's an experienced Championship keeper and as i said for that you have to pay.

They'll feel as always cheaper is better...

Has Pears kept a clean sheet since he’s been back in the side?

I saw his interview in LT begging to keep his spot in the team

Whilst he may not have been at fault for any goals we have conceded recently as in he hasn’t fumbled or made a direct mistake I do wonder if he is not as clear or direct at communicating with his defence as we had kept a few clean sheets prior to him returning

Whilst Toth clearly returns to the side, Im not sure the blame for not having a clean sheet from the last few games lands with Pears. If Miller could head, the ref didn’t give soft fouls and De Neve could track back he would have had 3 on the spin.

Pears has done alright. He's a reasonable No2. We won't do better. Those late goals weren't his fault.

Some people have a very low bar with Pears, and think he's doing well when he just isn't dropping absolute clangers. Which by his standards I guess he is doing well.

But I'm pretty sure the lack of clean sheets is due to having to play him instead of Toth. Toth is just a superior goalkeeper to Pears. He was making exceptional saves on a routine basis he had no right to, and Pears isn't doing that. There's also the communication aspect mentioned earlier that may be a factor, and the increased confidence a defence has when they know the man in the sticks is a good un.

That is the bar for any backup keeper at this level, with the exception of a few more monied up clubs

I have no issue with Pears as a backup, he is almost certainly better than whoever replaces him when he leaves.

Where I would have a problem, is if/when Toth is sold, Pears is touted as the new first choice

Nonsense. What would Toth have done differently for the Wrexham and Ipswich equalisers?

I fully agree Toth can save shit that Pears probably wouldn’t, and over the course of the season it makes a difference, but the lack of clean sheets in the last two games would have happened with those goals regardless of who was in the nets.

Saving that before you can edit it 😉
