It's a real shame what alcohol did to him - and what he let it do to him.

Both professionally and personally.

Goes deeper than the alcohol with him, his autobiography is a fascinating read, highly recommended. Only then do you get an idea of the mental trauma which often caused some of his outrageous behaviour. He grew up in the wrong generation, I dare say his life would have led a very different path growing up these days with the support available.

I drink everyday.  Not heavily but 2 or 3 bottles of stout/beer. Makes me think that I should be cutting back

Without wanting to make this into an anti-drinking thing, 2-3 bottles a day is a lot - and it will be doing a lot of damage, which may not show until later in your life.

I've seen alcohol do so much damage, both personally and professionally in my life - I gave it up a long time ago.

Everyone has their choices, of course, but it's a huge problem in this country.

I don't tend to drink on work days, but have about 5 pints Friday and Saturday. I can see how people can fall into the trap of having a few after a long day on top of that.....and then a bit more.....

Gazza has underlying issues that booze only made worse and more chaotic.

is 2/3 pints a day really bad,i used to go out 4 nights a week,it was only an empty wallet that stopped me in all honesty,i`ve never had an issues with my health and we used to cane it a lot

I agree. At first it was to cope with the loss of my parents.  Then I was made redundant last year so haven't been working. I'm cutting back especially when I get a job

I've cut down a lot myself this year, never drank during the week anyway but did so religiously at weekends no matter what even just at home relaxing.

Still drink but it's purely at social events now.

There's some really good alcohol free options now if you genuinely just enjoy the taste of a beer, big fan of the Leffe you can get, even Aldi do an AF version of St Etienne (their knock off Stella) Which is decent.

Good luck of the job front too, coming up to 2 years since I was made redundant after over 20 years service. I was lucky, landed a new job within a week or 2 but that initial feeling of panic was dreadful.

Thanks. I have redundancy money and inheritance money still so I'm not that panicked yet but I'm just looking for something part Time to pay the bills. Worked 12 hours a day for 26 years. I'm going to take it easy from now on. Glad you found a job so quickly

Agree with the Alcohol free beers.

I play football on a Thursday and a group of us tend to go to the pub after. I have to drive there so was always on soft drinks but last couple of times opted for an alcohol free beer to see what they are like. I was pleasantly surprised.

If you like lager I found the “ Erdinger Alkoholfrei “ the best for me.

I don't mind the Guiness 0, but I've found every lager I've tried has that weird underlying taste to it which I just don't like. I should try a couple of the recommendations here, but most pubs just tend to have the usual Becks Blue, Heineken 0 etc.. which are awful.

The Koppaberg Fruit Cider Alcohol Free tastes normal, but that is because the alcoholic version tastes like pure sugar anyway.

If you like cider. Try old rosy. Really good taste and doesn't have the cider taste which leaves you with heartburn

Same with me. I tend to find with beer the 0.5% ones have a better taste than the 0%.

Yeah, the ones I've had have been the 0.5% tbf

Upsetting to see him like this, losing his friend when he was younger amongst other things didn't help.

He is though just one of those likeable fellas despite his set backs. Some of his stories are pure gold.

He was a fantastic player before the injuries. A throw back to the players who could go past people like they weren’t there.

If you're diabetic and fancy am alcohol free beer, check to see how much sugar is in it. It caught my dad out before he looked.
