ROVERS VS STOKE CITY

Rowett has always been a counter-attacking manage and his sides have never been the most attractive to watch. I don't think they'll rip into us like Derby did but I think they've got more presence up front. Afobe has always looked a good player, especially at this level. Lenny will need to be on his game. Their team in their last game: Butland, Martina, Shawcross, Martins-Indi, Pieters Woods, Etebo, Allen, Ince, Afobe. Diouf, Subs: Federici, Edwards, Williams, Fletcher, Berahino, Crouch, Bojan. Not a bad bench! Woods looked excellent in the 15 minutes I saw on SKY after the Rovers game on Tuesday. It's a very strong midfield and I'll bet Dack gets a lot of attention like he has in the last two games. Rothwell may start after Moggas comments in the LT today. Tough game. A draw would be a great result but I think we may succumb to a narrow defeat. 1-0 to Stoke. -
I thought JAL was much older.

Mowbray in the LT saying we only have one creative player whereas Derby had three or four. Is that not why we brought in Rothwell and Palmer? It must make them feel good when they read that ? https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/16891430.tony-mowbray-wants-rovers-to-improve-in-possession/?ref=mac -
An Assessment of Player Performance v Derby

Bell was poor and I'm glad someone else was watching the match. I heard him talked about as MofM! Williams comes out of it well, I thought he played well, as do Evans and Smallwood. I voted Lenihan MofM, Nyambe a close 2nd. Armstrong just wasn't involved at all. -

No guarantees on Brereton and at £7m I think it's a huge gamble. Armstrong looks poor at this level and unless we change the way we play he will be a waste of money IMO. Palmer will become a bit part player unless he dramatically improves. Rothwell is the new Chapman, talented but under utilised. Reed looks good but where will he play? Mowbray won't drop Smallwood and Evans whilst we look relatively solid. For every good un there seems to be 3 bad uns. -

Agree with all that except the highlighted part. I don't have much confidence that Mowbray knows what he's doing in the transfer market. Buying or loaning CM's, No.10's and strikers and playing them out wide doesn't seem to be working. Not in this division at any rate. -

Mowbray said the opposite after the game, he said were too high up the pitch in the first half (trying to press them) whereas 2nd half we dropped deeper so they couldn't pass through us as much. I think that's pretty accurate. Agree on Smallwood and Evans, they are there to do a specific job which they do it pretty well. DG is vital to the way we play but there is an excuse for AA. As Mogga also said after the game: “We needed a platform to play off and we couldn’t get the ball to Bradley (Dack) to slide Adam (Armstrong) in and try and get in behind them" What he doesn't say is because we have Evans and Smallwood in midfield that is why we couldn't get the ball to Dack because their distribution is sometimes very poor, as it was last night. It's a balance that Mowbray has not yet got right. Dack has been practically man-marked the last two games and there is no-one else to create chances. I think he thought Dack and AA would do to Derby what they did to Carlisle. A bit naïve really. https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/16887225.derby-county-0-blackburn-rovers-0-tony-mowbray-reaction/?ref=mac Agreed. he gave the ball away countless times last night. He seems to lack drive and is too complacent with the ball. He's easily dispossessed at times in dangerous areas. My worry there is that Mogga may not be all that in the transfer market. We still rely heavily on the players he inherited. -

There were a lot of draws when he took over in the Championship from Coyle. He's very cautious so the safety first approach is more likely to yield draws. He sets out to not lose rather than win. Still, it could be worse, we could be getting smashed every week like PNE. -

It's a good job Derby didn't have a striker like Simon Garner! I thought their midfield was excellent but they lacked any real presence up front. That Mason Mount is a terrific player. That said I thought we defended heroically. The back four were immense bar Bell who I thought was appalling first half, constantly giving the ball away or being caught in possession. He improved 2nd half but still gave the ball away in dangerous positions. Williams had the same problem but bar one error I thought he was good at the back. Nyambe and Lenny are just monsters and worth their weight in gold. A couple of great stops by Raya but he is a liability. How he didn't give 3 goals away is a mystery. We were just outclassed in midfield. Smallwood works like a trojan and protected the defence well at times but he has limited ability on the ball. Evans I thought was pretty anonymous and is meant to be the one who can pass it in there. It didn't help that they were dealing with 3 attacking midfielders between them at times who were good at closing us down. Evans and Smallwood though are just fire fighters. It's up to the four ahead of them to create and do the attacking. That's where the problems lie. Felt a bit sorry for Conway. He was off the pace but what a game to give him his first start in! He was sacrificed for Graham because Armstrong wasn't up to it. Palmer should be touring the world doing a freestyle show. I bet he's amazing. Liability on the pitch mind. Another who kept giving the ball away. He's not a winger. Armstrong is just shyte. Loses the ball every time he gets it and offers nothing to the team. Again though I don't totally blame him. The team is not set up to play to his strengths. Besides Dack (who was quiet) there's nobody in the team that can play him in. He's a striker that runs in behind. We struggle to pass it ten yards so there's no chance of playing him in. No idea what they do in training but passing it to each other and retaining possession doesn't seem top of the list. Tonight showed what we miss when Bennett and Graham aren't playing. Proper players. They don't do rabonas though so they aren't rated by some. Brilliant point all in all. We aren't a great side by any stretch but there are some real warriors in the team. -
Mowbray said he's give the promotion side a chance and he's been true to his word. My gripe is the players he's brought in aren't suited to the formation he wants to play and/or are a bit shyte. Armstrong was poor last season at times. Terrific goalscorer but never a winger or a striker that suits our hoofball. Palmer looks like a luxury we aren't good enough to carry. Rothwell probably isn't a wide man either although if he can't get in ahead of those other two he must be shagging someone he shouldn't be.

Then subbing him after half an hour. He's only kept him at the club to humiliate him. Ruthless.
