I’m not an in the know but a guy I bumped into a couple of months ago knew one of our fringe players. He said then that Thomas’s attitude wasn’t right.

We needed more passing it out from the back. Big Chris - on his day a colossus.

Sometimes you’ve got to back your players and go 4 v 4 in defence. Then there’s got to be gaps in other areas of the pitch. When you end up defending your own 6 yard box unless you’re really lucky and your goalkeeper has the game of his lifetime you’re going to be in trouble sooner or later.

Sukur was a class act. I remember that game, he gave a exhibition of how to play centre forward.

I could go to two or three games a week with my paper round money back then. I’d be going past my local coach office on my way home from school and I’d see Bolton v Spurs or City v Wolves etc advertised and I’d be in and book. Dash home for some tea and back out to the game. Obviously it was all pay on the gate back then. You could just walk up. Then I started playing seriously myself so Saturday games were out.
