  1. Nobody at our level plays two up front and a player like Dack in behind. That ship sailed years ago.
  2. I'm hoping for a win but I've been watching us too long to be over confident. We love a banana skin at Rovers. If we win well tonight I'll really start to believe we can go places this season. I'm going for a draw 1-1 tonight.
  3. Very good signing. Just our luck we play them on Wednesday.
  4. Forest are just stringing us along hoping we'll pay daft money for this lad. It's time we called their bluff and walked away .
  5. His recent injury record would put me off. If you're going to pay big bucks whoever it is you sign they have to play. Martin Britt who I mentioned a while ago had such a bad knee injury he could only jump off his good leg !
  6. Yeah, since the abolition of the maximum wage any of the old mill town teams that are playing at the highest level are defying gravity. It's not just about money, the size of your fan base is still very important.
  7. I'd like to think we've more class.
  8. Yes, he went to Stoke for quite big money at the time. Stoke were a bit of a " Dad's Army " team at the time but they were quite successful. I think he later managed Oldham I think with out much success. Probably too nice a bloke to succeed as a manager. I thought it was Turf Moor also.
  9. I don't think it is Jim. I can't recall a Burnley v Rovers game being played at a neutral venue. Could be the FA Cup game in 1960 at Turf Moor.
  10. Yes a top player in his day. I only saw him towards the end of his career but at his peak he was good enough to play for The Rest Of Europe I think. He was a clever playmaker who scored his share of goals. A very neat and tidy player who rarely wasted a pass. A bit like a smaller Zinadine Zidane to watch. Off the pitch he was a really nice bloke I understand. I remember being stood by the wall on the Riverside when he came over to pick the ball up for a throw in and I flipped him the ball. The rivalry was different then and all top players were looked up to, they were all Giants to us football daft lads. Burnley ( well Bob Lord actually ) did the dirty on him and fired him off quite ruthlessly when he was just on the wane. Football was a bit " hire 'em and fire 'em " in those days but this was a particularly callous move. My geography teacher at secondary school was a die hard Burnley fan who idolised Mac and he vowed never to set foot in the ground again. In the two years he taught me before I left he never went back ! RIP Jimmy. You were a good 'un.
  11. Jimmy was playing ( well watching really ) that day Dougie and the Rovers ran the all conquering Spurs team ragged. He was absolutely unstoppable and laid on several of the 7 goals we scored that afternoon. In fact I think Greaves scored one of the 2 Spurs got. Legend has it that Bill Nicholson the Spurs manager approached the Rovers management in the boardroom after the game and offered to pay £110,000 for Dougie. The British record at the time was the £115,000 that Utd had paid for Dennis Law. Even Greaves himself had only cost Spurs £99,999. Dougie had been a bit unsettled at the time but thankfully we turned the offer down. I consider myself to have been privileged to have been there that day. We were jaw droppingly good and on another day we could have scored 10. I've seen some great performances over the years but that tops the bill for me.
  12. No, a pal of mine is a Sunderland fan and he hasn't got a good word to say about him.
  13. Armstrong is the nearest we have for that role.
  14. He scored a hat trick against Arsenal on his full debut !
  15. A Kevin Moran or an Andy Todd would be handy right now.
  16. I like Dack loads , he's been great for us , he's like a breath of fresh air at Rovers. Having said that he's not fit to lace Best's training shoes never mind his boots. The bloke was up there with Cruyff, Greaves, Di Stefano, Eusebio, the geniuses of 1960's football. Dack's the latest cult hero, he reminds me a lot of Tony Field in the way he's idolised by the fans. Let's hope he doesn't get snaffled up by a Premier League club as Field was.
  17. It's a bit early to say if we are a good pressing team. First impressions are a bit mixed.
  18. I don't think we have enough soldiers. Raya - Only a lad Nyambe - Ditto, but could become one in the fullness of time. Lenihan - Definitely a soldier. Mulgrew - Soldier in spirit but if the body keeps telling you that you aren't it's hard to argue. Bell - Too early to say. Bennett - Yep, he 's a soldier. Smallwood - He's been a soldier but currently on leave. Evans - Could be one if he got his mad up, doesn't do it often though. Palmer - Mm he looks to be a lover not a fighter to me. Armstrong - Not a soldier physically but could be one in terms of effort. Dack - I think he likes a scrap so I'll say yes there. Graham - Same as Charlie Boy, he likes the physical side but his body keeps telling him to behave. One of the reasons we got relegated was we were too easily pushed around. We're better in that respect now but I'd like to see another couple of guys who like the physical side of the game brought in. Watching the young guy we'll all talking about , he's a bit willowy yet and he doesn't knock people about but he's not frightened of a meaty challenge and he does use his size quite well.
  19. I think his agent will see to that.
  20. But not your typing finger. Smiley face. Please accept my apology, I shouldn't have been rude about someone I've never seen play.
  21. It doesn't sound like you learnt much in that time.
  22. I think the first two already are to be honest. The Jury is out with Smallwood.
  23. Mm Messi, not a bad player but he favours his left foot too much for my liking. Show him on to his right hand side and he's easy meat. On a serious note I can see why Bennett gets played out right these days. It's all about balance. You can only afford to play with one out and out attacking player on the flanks these days. If Palmer plays out wide Bennett balances the team on the other flank. Regarding Brereton, it's the " long term " bit I don't like. We needs a Graham MK 2 tomorrow, not in a years time.
  24. I been thrilled with lots of our signings over the years. At the moment it looks like we're trying to build a team to win an indoor six a side competition. Like Mowbray said you need some soldiers in the team, they can't all be artists.
