  1. Great shout. It was Nightingales and I was beating myself up trying to think of that. Tony Charles bought it from them.
  2. You are right about John Harrison Sports Andy and his sleeping partner was indeed Mick Heaton. I believe that John Harrison Sports is still in business, perhaps in Leyland. I'm pretty sure that the couple who ran County Sports resided in the Sunnyhurst area. Maybe claytonsleftboot might remember them. Airfix was the name of the model planes and cars etc. Half an hour with the glue that came with the kits and you were as high as a kite. 😂😂
  3. I don't remember records being sold there. It was a really well stocked shop - they seemed to have equipment for every sport and hobby. The couple who owned it were there when I was a kid and I think they saw it through to their own retirement.
  4. It was called Tony Charles records Andy. He started a football team which I played for called Charles Athletic and bought us expensive kits and tracksuits. He did live on St. Cuthberts Close and we had meetings in his house. It always reminded me of the house in A Clockwork Orange 😁😁. His real name was Brown and I think his Christian name was David. He also played cricket for one of the Darwen teams, perhaps thirds.
  5. Particularly when you consider how similar Travis and Morton are as players. At times today it was like they were tethered together. Wharton will give us something different and poses a threat going forward, something Travis and Morton haven't done for some time now.
  6. I'm delighted to get three points today because that trumps everything else but deary me. There is a lot of goodwill still towards Tomasson but there are clear and definite cracks in his armoury. He talked early on in his reign about passing for passing sake calling it The Dutch Disease. Todays first half was the epitome of pointless and inane passing at a pace that wouldn't have been out of place in walking football. And five at the back? Come on JDT, it's Millwall at home ffs. He tweaked it at half time and played Hedges further forward and for twenty five minutes we moved the ball quicker, didn't take too many touches and scored twice. Then we go back to a five man defence and concede and invite more pressure and could well have dropped two points. In truth if Mowbray had pulled a stunt like that he would have been hung, drawn and quartered. Of course we are in the top six but I want more from my club in terms of playing the likes of Millwall at home. Two nil and comfortable would have been great but 2-1 and desperately hanging on makes us all nervous. I think the majority would have backed Millwall to get a equaliser today and after seeing that so many times under Mowbray I don't want to see if again.
  7. Was it the Frido balls that were dimpled? We played football on cobbled streets invariably and with the variable bounce off the cobbles it heightened your awareness. We would play for what seemed like hours before we were interrupted by a car coming down the road. And sometimes the ball would be 'egg-shaped' if the owner had left it too close to the coal fire.
  8. Millwall have sold 402 tickets for today's match so we are likely to have our lowest attendance so far this season.
  9. All the best in your new role Joe. It's not something that I really believe in but you are clearly passionate about it and put your point of view across on here really well.
  10. The kid on the floor behind them looks like he's up to no good. 😁😁 I have a vague recollection of putting dubbin all over my case and bladder ball to waterproof it. And for any 'owd Darreners I used to buy my dubbin from the County Sports shop on Duckworth Street.
  11. Millwall are likely to have Jake Cooper and Charlie Cresswell at centre half and they are bigger and more powerful than anything we have. In my view we have to play quickly through midfield and get our forwards running in behind and down the sides. Rowett is one of the more tactically astute managers in the league and will undoubtedly set his team up to let us have the ball in our half and press to deny us space when we get over the half way line. This is how teams have played in our five defeats so far so I expect Millwall to do the same. As ever scoring first will be key as this will cause Rowett to change his set up and tactics.
  12. I noticed that too John. It almost looks like the referee didn't turn up and they got a bloke from the crowd to do it. 😁😁
  13. Waggott acceded to Mowbray when he wanted away fans in the UDE to negate any advantage they might give their team. There should be pressure on Waggott from our fans groups to do the same with Burnley and confine them to the top tier. Do I expect that to happen? No chance. He will see them as a cash cow and pack them in. We will be treated like pariahs over there in a shitty little wooden shed and they will get the red carpet rolled out for them.
  14. I think the one you are missing Andy is Pete Devine.
  15. I thought that too based on the location of the roofless Blackburn End.
  16. I nicked this from Rovers Twitter feed. It's from 1907 and we are playing Sheffield States and ended up 1-1.
  17. I spoke to an employee recently who has had two pay rises in the time since the errant ones rocked up. Their pension contribution is the absolute minimum (3% I believe) that Rovers have to compy with. One of the indicators of a poor employer are high turnovers of staff numbers. She told me that Rovers can't keep hold of good employees for any length of time.
  18. Didn't Mowbray himself to public and say he had unspent money at the end of one (or two) transfer windows? And what about the money he wasted on new, lengthy contracts and loan signings for players who weren't good enough. He never accepted responsibility here and his true colours are outed.
  19. With my personal loathing of the way International football takes over the domestic game and being starved of my live football fix I decided to go to Cantilever Park, Warrington for their game against FC United. It was only £8 for me and my granddaughter with street parking five minutes from the ground. I refereed there years ago and the ground is pretty much the same but the pitch was probably the best I have seen at that level. Playing for Warrington was Stefan Mols, once of this parish. He had some decent touches but nothing came from them and was hooked after 75 minutes. FC won 1-0 in an entertaining game in front of 1400 spectators. When we have our enforced Winter hiatus I would recommend to anyone at a loose end to check the fixtures for the Northern Premier League and pick a game. It really is enjoyable watching a live match and not really caring who wins.
  20. Great news. Thankfully his advisors have put him and his career first rather than chasing a quick buck.
  21. Our form against this type of robust and defensive teams has been awful so unless Tomasson comes up with an alternative plan my expectation is low. I remember reading how Millwall were ultra defensive and negative at Burnley recently and although they lost they held out for an hour. I expect us to have a lot more of the ball but in non threatening areas but they will have a four or five man midfield smothering play if we advance.
  22. We were crying out for some link up play yesterday and we were surprised that Dack didn't get on. We were pretty much second best in midfield yesterday as the had an extra man and again we were surprised Tomasson didn't address this by matching them up.
  23. The frustration is that we haven't shown any ways of playing against teams who are happy to let us have the ball in non threatening areas. I'm not a big believer in stats as they can be misleading but in this instance I think there is something in them borne out by bluebruce's research. It's up to Tomasson to come up with a way of playing to overcome this deficiency.
