Bobby G Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 With no money to spend on improving the team, Sparky has been doing a fix-job with the pieces he had for the past two - three years. He has done extremely well considering the lack of spending. Amazing job but everyone knows that as soon as any club with some money came along he would move. But Im sick that its not a BIG team. For me there are only 4 big teams in the country. Sick and sad. I can live with Sparky leaving and even Bentley cause once you say you want to leave you can leave BUT I would be GUTTED if he took Roque with him. I would be sick to the stomach! What a crapppy summer this will be. Lose the gaffer, lose one of your key players and worry about losing your top scorer too.
joey_big_nose Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 But then that puts Williams and the board in a bad position. What happens if Hughes ends up staying and another job comes up in mid season, Hughes will be linked to it and Hughes may again ask for talks. This could lead to disharmony in the club, lead to us having a really bad season in the league and the fans won't know what the hell is going on or might happen. It puts Williams in a really hard position, does he sack Hughes or does he keep him if Chelsea don't make an approach and thus Hughes turns down City. I ithink we must be in a position now where even if Hughes goes to Man City and turns it down we need a new manager. We can't have a manager in charge who has clearly looked for a new job. It is no good for the players or th edirection of the club. On the other hand we don't want to sack him as we would have to pay off him (£2m) and his staff (another £3m?) as well as not get any compensation. Now for me he is untenable so we want Man City or Chelsea to take him so we can make compensation rather than lose money. Its a shame but time to move on folks.
herbergeehh Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 But if Chelsea and City deals both fail to materialise, what then? Is there a chance he will stay at Rovers, or has he started clearing his office?
modes98 Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I also think backing Hughes for the Chelsea job is as close to a safe bet as you can get. Just backed him at 10/1 on Better with £6.90, they refused to take £10. So i put the rest on Big Phil. So no pressure nicko, but after the Coventry bet this one had better come in
USABlue Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Only one thing has made Mark Hughes want to leave Rovers. Lack of investment he said last year and in January about the need to invest to take Blackburn to the next level. It hasn't arrived and he knows he cant take Rovers any higher. I am extremely disappointed and its going to a LONG summer and a very long season cause not only will we lose a very good manager we will most of our coaching staff as well.Relegation could be looming or am i overreacting I'm with you on that 100%. My opinion is, the lack of funds made available to Sparky last Januaryt when we still had a real chance of cracking the top 4 or 5 WAS the ultimate deciding factor to Sparky that his talents were best suited elsewhere. IMHO Mark Hughes had his mind made up last January that it was time to move to greener pastures, wherever they may be.
nicko Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Just backed him at 10/1 on Better with £6.90, they refused to take £10. So i put the rest on Big Phil. So no pressure nicko, but after the Coventry bet this one had better come in Let it go... This is a very complicated scene right now. One man can sort the whole thing out - Roman Abramovich. If he tells Phil to forget it then Sparky will be at Chelsea. If not Sparky has to decide whether to join the circus.
USABlue Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Is this a good time to start a Coyley for Rovers campaign? But would he be interested in us after being at such a big club. Will he be applying for the job nicko?
percy Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 .....Now for me he is untenable so we want Man City or Chelsea to take him so we can make compensation rather than lose money. Its a shame but time to move on folks. Completely agree. He's played his hand, I think we should accept it and move on. Not sure I'd be too pleased if he came back after all this If Chelsea do go for Big Phil, then Hughes might well end up at City with a smaller kitty than expected by the sounds of it......
Iceman Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I will also agree on the no backing financial comments….JW,the club, the board whoever it maybe, are to blame for this.If we had the financial and I mean serious financial backer on board,he would not be jumping ship for City….Then if he moved to Chelsea,I would have applauded the guy.anybody who says its not because of money, are fooling themselves big time. What other reasons, are there to suggest otherwise?
Hasta Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I've just backed Hughes again for the Chelsea job. I'm in profit on everyone now except Rijkaard. I hope there's still no chance of the notorious spitting dutchman getting the Chelsea job is there Nicko?
ally Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Just backed him at 10/1 on Better with £6.90, they refused to take £10. So i put the rest on Big Phil. So no pressure nicko, but after the Coventry bet this one had better come in For anyone wishing to put a bet on Hughesy becoming the next chelsea manager can find odds of 10-1 on Ladbrokes, Stan James, Bet Direct and Better!! Scolari can also be found at 5/1 also on betfred and paddypower! Surely a tenner on each and you would be quids in!

You can't fault the current regime for this. There comes a time when a manager feels the need to move on. There also comes a time when a board gets fed up with him being linked with a move. Sure, it would be great if there was a new backer. But nobody has filled that vacancy either. You have to accept that as the reality. So, let's be realistic. If he goes, find a bright and hungry young manager who plays football that fills the ground without having to slash prices. You might not win the league, but you might win a Cup. You might also be better to watch. Only a couple of teams win things, so the rest should make it entertaining. That should be the guide when looking for the next boss. Sometimes change is good.

I hope there's still no chance of the notorious spitting dutchman getting the Chelsea job is there Nicko? Rijkaard was approached by Chelsea and told them he wants a break after Barcelona. He might have changed his mind since, but I doubt it. Arnesen was his backer but deffo wants Hughes. If they don't get him it's because of Roman.

Yeah I agree on change being good nicko, but change can also be disruptive…and unless the change falls into place quickly, you might find yourself struggling at the wrong end of the table…stability is utterly important in Professional football today
jny Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Grrrr why does hughes have to leave not to mention if bentley and santa leave. With money differences becoming greater between lower and 'Big' clubs what chance do we have (that is if we slip down the back end or relegation zone of the premiership). I am angry (and i am using big writing to covey this!!!!!)
nicko Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Forget all of the gloom about next season. There are eight or nine clubs who are hopless and will finish below you - even if Blind Pew was the boss. People can be replaced, The manager can go if he wants, find another and a different type of one. Bentley goes...so be it. He's not THAT good anyway. Roque would be a loss, I'll give you that. Right now would be as good as any for a freshen up. If that is funded by the manager and a player going, there is no real harm done.
den Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Let's look on the bright side - at least we wont be signing Koumas now!
Blackpool_Rover Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I understand all the frustration...im gutted because i think he will go but... Its understandable. He isnt a rovers fan like us. He has a career to build and in my opinion with the situation at rovers...this is a good time for him to move. There is a serious danger of us getting nowhere near 7th next season and if that happened its going backwards and will ruin his chances of a good job. At city he will get money, europe....also...i dont want to offend people at ewood here because i can only get there twice a year...but hes not happy with the atmosphere and attendances. Which are better at city. We move on. He cant perform miracles with no money for ever so a new face AND INVESTMENT is required...saying that im gonna be worried letting a new guy spend a lot of money...especially if its Sam.

waggy Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 i have said for many years,a managers lifespan at one club is 3 seasons.we have given hughes a good start in management, just like we did with jim smith-gordon lee -howard kendall etc.the clubs job is to replace sparky with a better candidate
Silencio Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Nicko, do you think the Rovers board have been preparing for this and will have been researching alternatives to Hughes since he was linked with Newcastle? Hughes was a fantastic appointment by JW but was that luck or does he know his football? What kind of manager do you think they'd mostly go for? I'd imagine it'll be another young one like Ince or Collins but I'd hope they'd look at people like Terim and Advocaat. They are older but will surely be interested in doing well in the Premiership...
