[Archived] New Sporting Director Rumour

The pertinent question at our club is surely if there was an agency trend to the 19 players he recruited to Sheffield Wednesday?

Without looking too deeply into it I know they have a glut of Portuguese players. Sounds familiar. Most likely as a result of their Portuguese manager, but was he involved in sanctioning an amount of these players.

I don't understand Venky's plan if rumours were correct and they wanted to leave Blackburn why hire a Sporting Director? I am not against this move as we do need to slowly move on players who aren't needed such as Guthrie, Feeney (Rather keep Bennett), Akpan (Great Role model for the club though with his charity work), Henley, Hendrie, Ward.

I would like to see Mahoney Wharton involved more in the second half of the season.

He isn't coming here to sell the @#/? players.

Global director = Did one big job then pointless & mostly powerless

Comms director = Mostly pointless & Powerless

Sporting director = ..............

With this guys CV he's just here to oversee more downscale probably just taking pressure of Cheston who's completely clueless if truth be told. A wheeler and dealer by the sounds of it who'll use his knowledge and contacts to reduce the wage bill by replacing 10k pwk players with 5k pwk ones.

Target League 1 survival.

This club is totally and utterly flecked i'm sure that fat gangster and his hidden partners think they can cut it back to a shoestring then bring through another crop to sell in two years for 20/30 mill.

Manager tells SD he wants a solid center half and battling midfielder. SD looks around at what he thinks he can get and what fits the budget then hands manager a list to pick from ? Maybe that's the way.

One thing it might do is stop Coyle from jobs for the boys using his own agents although there'll probably be some hidden connection to it all as usual

A Sporting Director/Director of Football structure can be very useful in football these days and is increasingly common at clubs.

Particularly for a club like Rovers with foreign owners never in the country who have no idea about football.

At the very least it provides a mechanism to keep the manager in check, stop him squandering money and paying silly wages and ought to create a situation whereby the manager can be changed with minimal disruption to the squad (Watford a prime example).

A Director of Football should have been one of the first things they did when taking over the club, putting their faith and resources into the hands of someone who could run the football operation for them on the ground using his contacts and experience.

Many clubs in this league have such structures. Infact pretty much every club other than Rovers has some sort of football director. They might have different titles and scopes of influence but there is usually someone in a senior position with responsibility for player recruitment, contracts, scouting and overseeing the football side of the club on behalf of the owner.

This is news because the shell of a club that is Blackburn Rovers has finally decided to appoint someone to a position most clubs already have filled.

Reading Nixon's latest story it is unclear what Senior's role will be. Will he be a Director with actual power or will he merely advise/assist Coyle? Who has asked for this position to be created and who has selected Senior? If its Coyle then there's a whiff surrounding himself with allies to safeguard his own position.

As ever they are leaving themselves open to suspicion and ridicule. Why any club would suddenly decide to appoint someone to oversee transfer business at a time when no money is available just doesn't add up.

So the V's are here to stay then.

Brilliant.

Do we have any good ones outside of perhaps Lenihan and a fit Mulgrew?

I exclude Marshall from the list as he's off anyway.

You've forgotten our esteemed Captain, aka the Lynchpin, the role model, the inspiration, the engine, etc.

Steele and Graham might fetch a little money too.

Whatever the thinking behind it at other clubs in order to benefit the football side of things that will not be it here. It'll be done opposite to how it's supposed to be and it won't work but someone will get a year or two's wages out of it for naff all and probably get paid off.

If Venkys/Kentaros own man here can't give answers or make big decisions with going around the world to get the say so then why will this bloke be any different ? Whatever ideas or plans he comes up with will still have to go through the same pathetic drawn out channels as everyone before him. Only gits who made any decisions themselves were dasturdly & muttley and we know why......

Saleable assets-off the top of my head..Graham, Lenihan, Evans, Conway, Marshall, Bennett. January will tell us a lot.

Everybody has a price and for the past few weeks Coyle and the LET have been telling everyone frequently how Mulgrew can play comfortably in two positions and is as good as anything in this league !

Yeah Mulgrew is certainly a saleable asset and his fee would fix the heating problem!

The shortlist for this DoF job seems to be as short as the list of players he can buy for 0.

Its a farce when we need an Executive Structure and 'some' communication. Still the Venkys really getting in to this football game now.
