“ We did the exact ( same ) training, heading the ball for hours on end, over and over again. A 90 minute session might be just about heading. I was a striker so my job was obviously to put the ball in the back of the net. We would do heading practice for hours and hours with the ball fizzing in from the wings. It was just header,header, header, bang, bang, bang. We’d it in training, sometimes for an hour and a half. When I think about it, I mean I must have headed the ball 10,000 times. I think heading should be limited in training, it has to be limited. We did it for too long, hence the fact I’ve ended up with early onset dementia at 57 “. It’s obvious to me that constantly headed a pretty heavy football isn’t good for your health. Although you get outliers like Sir Geoff Hurst, who must have headed as many balls as Payton if not more, and is still lucid. My best mate at the time who went on to have a long and successful career in amateur football as a centre forward and centre half has Parkinson’s. He was a great header of the ball but I suspect he’s paying for it now. Heading was my weak point. In training and practice I’d always be sending in the crosses and avoiding heading the ball at all times. Maybe that’s why I’ve still got some marbles left.

The reputation of being a club that “ looks after its players “ is a useful one to have but there are limits. Siggy probably wouldn’t agree with me I suppose.

I was always told if you want to give an opponent a quietener do it as early as you can. He obviously works to the same plan.

In other news ex Dingle Andy Payton reveals in my paper today that he’s suffering from brain damage allegedly caused by too much heading of the ball. How long will it be before heading the ball is banned in the game ? Maybe not in my lifetime but it,is coming. He says he spent whole training sessions on heading practice so he suggests that sort of training should be cut.

It was as good a clearing header as you’ll see from any defender. He got it completely wrong. It needed a glancing header. It wasn’t even near to the target. That miss along with that cock up from Kargbo’s long cross field ball when he basically passed the ball back to their keeper made him their best defender for me.

He looked like a walking card to me. How he never got booked was a mystery.

It’s getting bigger exponentially every year. All three promoted teams will be favourites for relegation next season. The days of Fulham, Rovers and Bolton all staying up are long gone.

That was a really bad goal to give away, how many opportunities to clear the ball did we fail to take. Sheff U must have had the ball in and around our box for 30 seconds at least and nobody got a boot to the ball. The substitutions killed the game for us. They actually made us worse at a time when we needed to step up our game.

I thought he was poor again today when we needed a big game from him.

The game was drawn because of lack of serious attacking threat. Dolan was hardly in the game today. Hedges was ok but was playing way too deep. Ohashi strove manfully with hardly any service. Then the subs came on and actually made us worse. Kargbo looked like an Olympic sprinter who’d not actually played football since he left school. Just no football brain at all. Gueye hardly saw the ball and Dennis was just awful. That was a good headed chance he put wide.

I’m off up to my sons shortly.to watch the game. Then at 2-25 it’s dashing off in a taxi up to the ground to see my Rugby League team play. Normally they play on Sundays but today of all days it’s a 3-00pm Saturday KO ! Let’s hope I’m not phoning for a taxi before the final whistle in our game.

Bellingham has turned into an entitled gob shite since he went there.

For me his biggest failing was always his decision making. He got too many wrong. Shooting when he should pass, passing when he should shoot. The spinning on the ball until he lost it etc. is it only me that thinks that aspect of his game has improved since Ismael arrived ?
