v QPR (h) - 30/7/22

I know we advertised recently for a Casual Scoreboard Operator but this bloke today took it literally. He kept the clock going for the additional two minutes at the end of the first half which he shouldn't, was doing the same for the additional three at the end of the game but unfathomably stopped the clock on 92.14. -

Great start to the Tomasson era with lots of glimpses of how he wants us to play. Really good intensity, quick incisive passing and good movement. There were times when the levels we all want to see dropped off and QPR had a couple of decent spells but overall it was comfortable. The biggest thing for me was the collective work rate as every player put a real shift in. At the final whistle several of our players dropped to their knees in what looked like sheer exhaustion to me - exactly what I want to see from a Rovers team. For me Hedges was our stand out player but not far behind were Buckley and Travis. Our centre halves were generally comfortable in possession and dealing with the lively QPR strikers. But the result is the main thing and I'm genuinely enthused after what I saw pre season and today. Tomasson is clearly looking to play a certain way and it might take time but the early signs are for me really positive. -

When they went off sale yesterday QPR had sold 1185 tickets for today and they can still be bought at Ewood. It's plain stupid in my view to isolate them upstairs in the Darwen End as it's been reported. This was Mowbrays idea (as confirmed in a Fans Consultation Meeting) so now he is history there is no reason to keep doing it. They should be doing their best to increase the atmosphere and away supporters can contribute to this. -

Nothing radical in Law John just some cosmetic things which won't really have a bearing on the games. The usual instructions have gone out though about clampdowns on various things. This year it's time wasting and dissent, the former I have been critical of for some time now. Also the referees have been told to be more tolerant of physical contact, in other words let a few challenges go which is something we all (well our generation anyway) want to see. I just hope these are consistently applied. If they are the game and spectators should benefit. -

There has been a change to the number of substitutes that can be made. Teams in the Championship, League One and League Two were only able to use three substitutes from seven available during the 2021-22 campaign. The number of available substitutes will remain at seven, but teams will now be able to make their five changes across three opportunities, not including half-time. -

If this doesn't get the juices flowing then nothing will. -
It depends if they are involved in play or involved with another player in which you don't always have to touch the ball. Gaining an advantage is the consideration.

This is the QPR squad with some decent players but nothing to fear. I really want to see some real intensity to our play, quick, sharp incisive passing and lots of movement. Obviously winning is the most important thing but if we can win with the afore mentioned qualities I'll be delighted. Today could be the start of a new era on the pitch for us, an era were we are entertained, were we can see a plan by the manager and see plenty of goals and points. The rest will take care of itself. -
It's something that rarely happens in fairness. Since the change I can only think of one instance when it has happened at Ewood. Our supporters went mad at the referee but on this occasion he was totally correct.

The law on offside changed several years ago so now the free kick is given from where the player who was in an offside position touched the ball, even if he's in his own half.
-
They reminded me so much of us under Mowbray. A team without a plan.

I have to say Burnley were impressive in the first half and could easily be three up. Their press is really good as is the passing. That said Huddersfield are poor and it looks like they only have nine players such is Burnleys dominance. I think Huddersfield might just crash and burn this season. On the back of an unlucky playoff final defeat they have lost their manager and best two players.

I noticed Swag reported a 'significant spike' in Young Adult season tickets which is great. If he dug deeper he would know that lots in that category have more disposable income than the majority of others. He said he understands the socio economic situation but that doesn't seem to have deterred him from isolating many who simply can't afford them.

Apologies he did until 2026. Transfermarket hasn't updated. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/blackburn-rovers/berateruebersicht/verein/164 -

I'm the same but my gas, electricity and fuel are essential to live comfortably and for some it's a stark reality of justifying a season ticket in the current financial climate. And therefore the huge increases we are seeing in them is likely to prevent some casual supporters from buying them. Of course reducing prices of season tickets would have been a gamble but a calculated one in my opinion. I know some posters don't like the Nobbers comparison but that really is the yardstick for me. -

I like to think I am reasonable. I understand that there is a big turnover of players at football clubs and accept that. What frustrates me is that these have walked away for nothing at a time when we seem desperate for cash mainly to be P&S compliant. Parachute payments (of which we were once the beneficiaries) are unfair but they have been with us for some time now and I don't see that changing in the near future. I agree entirely with your last sentence but sadly I fear they will win. -

I can't agree that they are happy to let players leave for free - it's because they don't want to keep putting these extraordinary amounts in that we are seeing these cutbacks. But what about replacing the outgoing players? We have just paid £1m for Nyambes direct replacement and I'd wager he will be on what Nyambe earned on his deal. And what are we going to offer Brereton, are we going to exceed this wage structure? along with Brereton both Travis and Dack are out of contract next year although the club appear to have one year options on them. Will we see another situation like this summer? -

These slimy, greedy agents you refer to operate in the same way at every club. They are paid to get the best deal for their clients but many other clubs seem to be able to deal with them. If Phillips leaves that will be four players walking away after refusing a new deal and potentially the jewel in our crown doing similar next summer. I can't think of any club that has lost four players in similar circumstances at once. I could accept one of two but four? Surely fans are in order to question that. -
Marcus Tavernier (who I hear some of you saying) has signed for Bournemouth for £12.5m from Middlesbrough. That is scary. If ever there was an average Joe he is it.

It's almost like he has given up on growing the season ticket numbers and is happy to take money from the 8000 or so who will turn up irrespective. For the life in me I just don't understand why a different approach wasn't taken and perhaps something radical tried. Surely it would be worth a gamble for one season. At least he can then justify 'we've tried' excuse if it doesn't work.
