all you need is duff
Alan Shearer's testimonial details have been announced today. 11th May: Newcastle Vs Celtic - all proceeds go to charity. I was thinking of trying to get tickets. Are any other roverites going? Edited February 15, 2006 by all you need is duff

Alex Rover
Doesn't anyone else think this is awful? Celtic? Yes, yes I know about their fans but where's the logic in that, where's the link? Rovers would easily bring whatever Celtic do, especially as most the 50 odd thousand will be geordies. A damn shame I say. Why belittle his career playing against a club like Celtic? Jan
Because Celtic will show it worldwide on TV, which being Mr Shearer he'll have negotiated a rate for. Also even if the Geordies don't think it worthwhile (although I'm sure they will), Celtic will bring as many down as needed.
Alex Rover
It's just such a missed opportunity for the two clubs he graced to say thanks and farwell, I know there's charities involved but it shouldn't just be about the money, where's the romance? ihtd
It should have been played against either us or Southampton. Soton would have been a nice touch, the club he started his career at and the club he ended it at.
philipl
Come on, the Geordies couldn't handle Shearer wearing the medal he won with us. As it is, Keane will send him into retirement with a broken leg- there's bound to be unfinished business between those two.
1864roverite
Phil you missed the most obvious reason why Celtic have been chosen. its not for the money or the supporters it so Shearer can punch the living daylights out of thug Keane to get him back for the baby slap he did some years ago when he got sent

Ronin
Think I heard on SSN that he's even pumping some money into their youth set up to get some of the up and coming talent through the ranks. . . . Fairplay, but when was the last time Newcastle had someone come through the ranks?

Ronin
D'oh! Bet there'll be a slew of names mentioned now Although after Souey's shortlived reign and expenditure, they'll probably be focusing on the youth a bit more.
Duff's Minder
As Philip says the main reason he can't play it against us is because it would remind everyone that this Geordie legend has not won a single medal after ten seasons at Newcastle. Makes both the club and Shearer look a bit foolish. How much have Newcastle spent in that time compared to the '95 rovers squad?
gazsimm
do u reckon any of the title team might get a suprise outing?
SIMON GARNERS 194
What a shame, the only reason he chose Celtic was ££££££££££££sssss I'm sure Rovers fans would have travelled in their thousand's. OH WELL
gazsimm
why bloody celtic it would have been a great game if had been us against Newcastle with sum of our old players from the title winning team getting an outing
