Went to Checco's last night in Great Harwood. Been there before but it was about ten years ago. Very nice food. I usually have a pizza for my main course when eating Italian. The best ever pizzas imo are at the Godfather in Darwen but I have to say those at Checco's push them close. Four of us went, the bill came in at £55 per couple which included three rounds of drinks.

The only downside was that we had to wait nearly an hour for our table. The bar and seating area was absolutely packed. We assumed they overbook on purpose, hoping folk don't mind too much and at the same time boost the bar takings.

Went to the Assheton Arms at Downham this afternoon. Sister outlet with the O&O. Very good as you'd expect I think there were one or two extra dishes on the menu but my wife says not.

We were at the O&O last Thursday and I think I prefer it. Main difference is the staff, nothing wrong with the Assheton, but the O&O staff are great fun and have lots of personality.

I avoid such places like the plague cos it's sneaky hallal abbey. They're all taking the @#/?.

sorry, whats sneaky hallal?

to non muslims isn't halal meat just meat where the animal is slaughtered and prepared slightly differently, its only muslims that should be concerned.

(or am i miss reading your post)

Halal is considered crueler I believe causing the animal more suffering

I imagine the suffering in all the time leading up to slaughter is the same though in most cases

Obviously any animal slaughtered in the uk has to meet the same animal welfare standards, halal or not, its clearly only hypocrites and people with a hidden niggle against muslims(and who doesn't have one of them these days:) that make a fuss.

So why is it forced on us ?

We are NOT a Muslim country .

It's Italian and I had not even give it a thought. Will now though.

ignorant comments.

Worrying over whether the practise of killing an animal the halal way causes more suffering to the animal(halal basically means its been quickly bleed to death with a little prayer said over it) is one thing, but it seems you and drog are more concerned about the threat of the Muslim culture slipping into your lives(maybe your lives could do with a little culture?).

its like refusing to eat food that is labelled suitable for vegetarians, just because your not a vegetarian.

As for the practise of halal slaughtering being more cruel, well there's always numerus well publicized reports of serious cruelty and torture going on in regular British slaughterhouses(all be it usually just by a small handful of sick Weirdo employees)

You plainly don't know what you are talking about. Animals who have been stunned prior to being slaughtered bleed to death at exactly the same speed. So whose making ignorant comments now?

A little culture? So banning the stunning of animals prior to totally unecessarily barbaric slaughter for no other reason than cruelty ... is that some culture that I am missing? How about subjecting females to second class citizenship and shooting teenage girls who stand against it? How about bigamy? How about forming a racist paedophile ring by targetting only under age IndoPak children to rape and all manner of atrocity? Are they all cultures that my life is short of? Maybe I'd be culturally fulfilled if I attended a few public stonings for minor offences like adultery etc? What do you reckon?

I must admit, I do find the slaughter process of Halal meat to be disgraceful and for that reason, I will try to avoid it where possible.

We're in 2013, not 34BC and shouldn't be causing unneccessary stress and distress to the animals when there are devices such as stunners and pitters around.

I couldn't care less if Halal was related to Islam, Judiasm or Christianity, it's just wrong.

Why not talk about the Norweigen nutcase that shot innocent people, or the nutcase that thought it was okay to kill innocent children in a school, or the slaughtering of innocent Palestinian children, or the same rape offences commited by Christian males targetting "white" underaged girls? Are these all part of the culture that you agree with? Don't see you mentioning them offences, is this because it wasn't carried out by an Asian or Muslim?

Theno isn't your favourite local restaurant Bukhara? Their meat is halal.

As for local eats, I went to the Italian in Whalley, Amico Mio, shortly before Christmas, and had a good night.

Decent food, nice atmosphere, good prices and even a guitar player strumming away in the corner!

Was in Preston Tiggis last week, which was decent enough, but alarmingly quiet for a Saturday night, it's days may be numbered.

KFC ...I refuse to go in the blackburn one as its also filthy. bernard matthews ..never .Eggs i buy the happy range .

I totally agree on the KFC in Blackburn(im assuming you mean the one across from the observatory), it really is and always has been pretty vile in every way possible especially compared to some kfc's ive been too out of town(it makes the kfc at salmesbury look like the ritz)even the staff and management there are rough as hell and always grubby looking.

Even at fast food chains there is a certain standard decent they usual all meet these days,i imagine because of all the competition from the many independent take away/eat in cafe/restaurants and coffee shops that have sprung up every where over the last 5-10 years, most of which offer good quality food&drink at the same price as the big fast food chains.(but for some weird reason the KFC in Blackburn has always stayed the same)

As for Halal slaughtering methods and all slaughter houses in general, i think they vary from one place to the next and there's probably things that happen in all slaughterhouses every day that would shock anybody if they knew what was really happening inside those walls when the inspectors are around. There is one argument that halal slaughter men are more professional, respectful and efficient in the way the kill/cut the animals as their job is a more specialised.

To add ive just read that many Halal slaughterhouse do actually now stun the animal in some way before killing, kfc apparently demand that this happens.

p.s. I know its bad but i kinda like Bernard Mathews turkey drumsticks and turkey burgers on occasion, I think largely for silly nostalgic reasons(growing up on shad estate with no money, Bernard Mathews was staple food), the drumsticks in particular do have quite a unique flavour that's very tasty, i imagine they are a reasonably good source of protein for the price(turkey meat is considered a superfood for its high protein/low fat ratio isn't it:) and ethically i think it would also be hypocritical to consider Bernard Mathews any worst than most other fast food meat sources and easily affordable frozen processed meat foods.

Are you looking for an answer more sophisticated than "none of those are in Blackburn"?
