gumboots Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 He looks a good player when he's given time (like at a dead ball) but a few times yesterday he picked up the ball 35-40 yards from goal, took a few touches and before getting a shot or a pass away, got surrounded by defenders and the ball was taken away. I think it's just a case of him getting used to the speed of the Premier League : when he's learnt that he'll know that he has to get a shot away or draw the defenders as he does now but then slip a pass to a team mate who those defenders will have given a bit more room to. No reason why he shouldn't learn things like this. And by the way, every Rovers fan wants him to do well. Most of those kind of mistakes are easily dealt with if a player is willing to learn and has a decent football brain. He didn't have preseason, has been ill, is adjusting to a new country and a new set of players as well as a new way of playing. I think he's doing just fine so far bearing all that in mind and as you say we all want him to do well because if he can learn how to play premier league football we and Chile will have a real star on our hands.

Walls Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I'd do one myself but I'm not very creative and frankly I can't be arsed but I think a song for our Chilean friend based on Champagne Surpernova might be quite good. Obviously replacing the title with his name. I think it fits quite well - it does in my head anyway.
bullyboyz Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 genius walls gotta be one for saturday with oasis bein mancs an all (city boys maybe but mancs are mancs)... slowly dribbling with the ball faster than a cannonball where were u when he was getting by someday we will find you underneath the rovers with our champagne villeneavua champagne villeveau etc
Hughesy Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 The champagne supernova song could also be used as mentioned in song 3 below from 2 months ago. Song 2 He fakes to the left, and flicks with his riiiight, Villa-neu-va, MAKES RONALDO LOOK SH!TE Song 3 How many will get in the way How many will get skinned today Where were you while he was passing by? Someday you will find him Flying down the touchline Now that Carlos Villenueva's in our side Always you will find him Skinning everyone's hide Now that Carlos Villeneuva Carlos Villaneuva's in our side
J*B Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Easier.. Someday you will find him, Flying down our touchline Now that Villa-nu-evas in our side We're not the most creative bunch, dont make it any more complicated than it needs to be!
Stuart Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I've been peddling this one: (To the tune of Copacabana...) His name is Carlos Vil-la-nu-eva _ he plays with skill and flair and he scores from anywhere! His name is Carlos Vil-la-nu-eva _ he's magic on the ball and he's scored another goal! ...obviously it kind of relies on him scoring a few!
Tim Southampton Rover Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 If he's a flop then you could just change the end bit to: His name is Carlos Vil-la-nu-eva _ he's sh*te on the ball and he's done f*** all!
Tim Southampton Rover Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 To the tune of Guns n Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine He's got a smile that it seems to me Reminds me of childhood memories Where everything Was as fresh as the bright blue sky Now and then when I see his face He takes me away to that special place And if I'd stare too long I'd probably break down and cry Oh, Oh, Oh Villa-nu-eva Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh Villa-nu-eva Bit gay at the moment but I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it.
bazza Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 His name fits into La Cucaracha. La Cucuracha plus the Flintstones:- Villa-nue-va, villa-nue-va Yabba-dabba-dabba-doo Villa-nue-va, villa-nue-va Yabbi dabbi dabbi doooo....................love you
chileandude Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Welcome. Got any other good Chileans on there way to stardom that havent been spotted yet? Hmm...you mean players in the Chilean league that could cut it in the Premiership in the short-term like Villanueva?...I can think of only one, 20 year old Gary Medel from Universidad Catolica. He's a regular in his team and in the NT, was part of Chile's U20 squad that got 3rd place in Canada World Cup and was also part of the squad that reached the final of the Toulon Youth Tournament alongside Villanueva (Chile lost 1-0 to Italy). Boca Jrs has shown interest in signing him. He is a short but stocky defensive midfielder. They call him 'Pitbull' so you can get a picture of how fierce the guy is. He used to have a problem with his aggressiveness (got expelled in the semi-final against Argentina in the U20 world cup)...but lately he has risen above this and now he is clearly too good for the Chilean league. He jumps pretty well, but also has a great technique for a defensive midfielder. He is very clean with his passing and rarely gives cheap balls away. Bielsa sometimes uses him as a defender (although this is not recommended, mainly because of his hight). Here is a great article I found about him: --- At just 5.6ft (1.72m), Gary Medel may not be the classic size for a defensive midfielder but don’t be fooled, the “Chilean pitbull” is one of the most exciting talents in South America. This multi-talented player, born in Pudahuel, a small commune located in Santiago Province, has numerous qualities that make him currently the brightest prospect in Chile. With a game based on intensity and high energy it comes as no surprise that the Chilean press has fallen in love with this hard-working player. Medel has been nicknamed the “Chilean Gattuso” after the AC Milan and Italy midfielder and the “pitbull” – the same moniker attached to another defensive midfielder with seemingly boundless energy, Edgar Davids. Medel is the most exciting and intelligent player in the Primera Division, he has a strong shot, great heading ability and a wonderful passing style. As a defensive midfielder he knows the importance of finding his team mates with accurate passes and he can also play a defence-splitting through ball. According to the IMScouting database, the estimated market value of the former Chile Under-20 player is €4,500K whilst his estimated salary per year is €31K. This right-footed player who can also play at the back and on either side of the midfield may be attractive to La Liga teams as his only language is Spanish. (I think he can play at Blackburn as well! ) The 21-year-old box-to-box midfielder came to the fore for the national team on the 15th of June, 2008 against Bolivia when the pint-sized Medel became the new hero of Chile with two goals including a stunning bicycle kick in a 2-0 win. Following his match-winning performance, Medel commented with characteristic humility, “it was great game for me, but I always think about the team in order to win.” The Univ Catolica player continued, “the most important thing was the three points for our campaign.” The above comments following the World Cup qualifier are excellent proof of his level headedness and why many football experts in Chile believe Medel is a certainty to be a huge player in the future. This defensive midfielder played in both the recent World Cup qualifying games for Chile, coach Marcelo Bielsa had complete faith in him and he played a powerful 90 minutes against a strong Brazil side that ran out 3-0 winners. Following the defeat to Dunga’s side, Medel was a key member of the side that bounced back in style just three days later with a comprehensive 4-0 win against Colombia. In the Primera Division this season he has made 21 appearances and scored two goals. In yet more evidence of his balanced temperament, Medel has received 10 yellow cards so far this campaign but has yet to receive a red card. This is Medel’s second full season for Univ Catolica, during his first for the club he scored four goals in 25 games, a very impressive figure for a defensive midfielder. At the end of season 2007, the supporters of Catolica chose him as their Player of the Season and Chile coach Marcelo Biesla commented at the time that “Medel has to stay humble like he is. He has all the right qualities to join a super club in Europe.” Medel’s contract expires in 2012 and the sky is the limit for a rare breed of defensive midfielder, one who, according to the IMScouting system combines a high level of strength with top quality technique and creativity. --- Obligatory youtube compilation: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=k8pRQq_-1dE And his best match so far, against Bolivia in the hight of La Paz (Where RSC's Paraguay lost 4-2), Gary Medel scored both goals for Chile...and one was an amazing bicycle kick. The second one was a mistake by a Bolivian defender...notice Villanueva's cameo on that corner...maybe they could do that for Blackburn? http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uQItVSjRpXQ His best goal in the University derby. Universidad Catolica vs Universidad de Chile: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DnSowP_J0WA Most of the other talented youngsters have already been sold. It seems to me there are more scouts in Chile lately because we seem to be exporting good players directly to the top leagues (and at record prices) without passing through intermediate leagues like Argentina or some minor European league. There are other prospects that Blackburn could buy...but these are not ready for Premiership level just yet...though I don't know if Blackburn has a policy of buying talented U20 youngsters from abroad like Arsenal do...if so I can give you a couple of names that are sure bets for the future.
herbergeehh Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 I guess the Guns'n Roses suggestion is the most likely to succeed, especially if you only sing the chorus. Champagne Supernova is a bit ambitious, isn't it?
Exiled_Rover Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Fun fact, he shares his name with a major league baseball pitcher (for the Brewers).
