Hughesy Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Ok so nicko has reported that Warnock is off to Villa for up to £8m, suggesting the money will be used for 1 or 2 midfielders. Simple really, what would you rather have - a quality midfielder or Stevie? Il start - Quality midfielder please Sam.

Tim Southampton Rover Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 It depends who the quality midfielder is and how he'd fit into our team.
tHe_UnAmEd Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 can we not have both :/ I will cut off my left one if we sign a midfielder. You know where the money is going to go, the never ending hole that is the trustee's front pooch.
beerwins Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 quality midfielder all the way, warnocks work ethic will be missed but givet is more than capable in the defensive part of his game, having always loved watching tugay wing a ball 40 yards to feet to see him go was heartbreaking but to not see him repalced is almost unforgivable, nzonzi looks like he has the work ethic to give another midfielder a bit of space so bring one in sam.
owenrilla Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I am a fan of Warnock, even if it is as much because of his ability to fire up the crowd with a strong tackle than anything else. However, we need a midfielder who can do something other than pass the ball 10 yards sideways. Warnock is one of the few players we are likely to be able to sell for a decent fee, the other main example being Samba. For me it therefore comes down to a choice of selling either Warnock or Samba in order to get he midfielder we need (assuming we can spend the money - not necessarily a given but nothing else makes sense) and under those circumstances it has to be Warnock that goes.
booth Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 A quality midfielder, but where do we get one of those in todays market with a sum that could be quite a bit less than £8mil? Would have loved to have gotten Tuncay, or Kalanic's team-mate at Hadjuk Split.
mohelger Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Givet wasn't signed to be a squad player, and with Nelsen and Samba in the centre Givet's place will be on the left side. Warnock would then have to be placed in midfield to fit in a starting XI. Of course it would be a luxury to have Warnock as well as an option in defence, but if the sale of Warnock gives us funds to bring in a quality 'specialist' midfielder, then we could be better off; of course it depends on how the money will be spent.
MeanGreenMachine Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 We finally get a decent left back since le saux left and we are selling him for 8million...... Givet is the best centre back at the club by far and now we are going to stick him out left. Sam will get about 3p to spend cos the board will pocket erm i mean the "bank" will take it. joke of a club
philipl Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 IF WHAT IS PLANNED HAPPENS, YOU WILL BE SEEN TO BE A JOKE OF A SUPPORTER. Oops, sorry caps lock by mistake!
FourLaneBlue Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 To answer the original question...a quality midfielder without a shadow of a doubt. If those are the two choices then it is a no-brainer. Of course now we have to wait and see if it happens.
JAL Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 No brainer Hughesy a quality midfielder though i'd also want a quality central defender aswell.
MeanGreenMachine Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 IF WHAT IS PLANNED HAPPENS, YOU WILL BE SEEN TO BE A JOKE OF A SUPPORTER. Oops, sorry caps lock by mistake! Why because i hate us seeing sell quality players when nothing will be put back into the coffers.....
tonyoz Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Surely this is Sam's decision. He knows he has to wheel and deal to assemble the team he wants. Warnock was expendable and hopefully the quality midfielder we all crave is on his way.
doctorryan Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 IF WHAT IS PLANNED HAPPENS, YOU WILL BE SEEN TO BE A JOKE OF A SUPPORTER. Have you been taking Nicko lessons Phil?
Mr. E Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 We have good cover for Warnock. If we can't expect our injured midfielders to come back to top form any time soon, surely we have to buy a CM.
riverside returns Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Agreed with the majority on here, Warnock is a good left back and was a decent midfielder but for >8mill and the opportunity to sign a good central midfield specialist, I think that selling a 28 yr old for the money is good business. I trust Sam and his judgement.
patrickvalery Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I don't understand the hysteria over this. I've said before that Sam seems to be expecting more and putting an emphasis on wide midfielders as an attacking force. As such our fullbacks need to defend. As much as i loved Warnock he is not the sort to enjoy and be effective defending for 90mins. Givet will. £8m (if this is true) is not a bad fee for a fullback. OK Bridge went for a lot more but only cos it was from Chelsea to City. The seller didn't need to sell and the buyer did. And had lots of money to do so. However, with RSC and now probabaly Warnock sold in the same summer, i think we as supporters are entitled to expect two big (in relative terms) signings. Kalinic was the 1st and the money from this sale should fund the 2nd. I have no idea who and suggesting names is largely pointless. But we all no what is required. We have enough mercenaries in midfield to carry a genuine flair player now. It would be lovely to see the Rovers with a proper midfielder in the side. Tugayesque but not so deep. If we fritter this money away on anything less than an established pro of a decent age and pedigree i'll be hugely disappointed.
dingles staying down 4ever Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 If we plan to play all season like we did last Saturday then a quality midfield is essential but if we revert back to last season's survival non-football then a quality midfielder will be forever on the treatment table with strained neck muscles and would be a waste of money. Hopefully signing a midfielder will indicate a better quality of football than last season.
Rover4ever Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I heard from a Villa mate that Nickey Shorey may be coming to us as part of the deal. The guy called me at midnight to ask me how we rate Warnock, I told him he is probably our 4th best defender, but thats it ....
Big Fat Sam Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 So let me get this straight. Sam said thats it, no more ins and outs. And Stevie's on his way, do I detect the hand of the B.A.N.K. manager again????
Kelbo Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I would rather have had both Warnock and a quality midfielder, however, I am told that originally Sam thought the injured lads would have been ready earlier and would have coped, but I understand now that this may take slightly longer and we simply cannot compete with a makeshift midfield nd Keith Andrews, who despite his hard work is light years away from being a premiership midfielder!! We simply have to get some quality in midfield, preferably two, as this is an area where you get the most injuries and yellow cards!! So let me get this straight. Sam said thats it, no more ins and outs. And Stevie's on his way, do I detect the hand of the B.A.N.K. manager again???? I think on this occassion, it will be more football related than finance, Sam will have said we simply must be able to use the money or he stays!! I may be wrong here, but I think Sam will already have a man lined up, I hope its a quality player who can pick a pass and a really good engine, my thoughts are it will be Rothen plus A. N. Other!
Paul Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I wrote one post, pressed the wrong key and lost the text, still at least I vented my anger at this news. Now I'll try to be more considered. I like Stevie Warnock, he's a good footballer, he'll get stuck in when he has to, he's English, he puts in a shift, yes he makes mistakes but he tries hard every match. Steve Warnock is an honest footballer. I can identify with this man. Sadly he's the last in the outfield squad who means anything to me, so I'm unhappy at his transfer to Villa and it raises many questions. Lets look at the midfield. We have four players injured and / or poor, who should have been shipped out ahead of Warnock. The problem is they're injured and well paid. What is the future for these players? Dunn - ravaged by injury and lack of overall fitness. When did we last see a full 90 minutes from him? We can't rely on anything from David again Grella - I've seen one decent performance from him and that was in the same midfield as Dunn. Ho hum. No expectations here Reid - what is it now, two years since he made a contribution to the squad? Not the player's fault so anything Reidy brings to 2009/10 will be a bonus Emerton - I never really liked Bert on the right side of midfield. Now we've signed the son of God to fill the right back slot for two years I suppose we'll be watching Brett run very fast down the flank before cutting inside 15 yards from the touchline. Usually creates a goal a season with this. I truely hope Allardyce / Williams have something lined up and ALL the money (up to £8m is insulting) will be available to solve the midfield problem. If not I shall begin to question John Williams policy and judgement. We cannot continue to sell our best players and replace them with the second-raters we've had to date. The money must go into midfield, but I suspect if any of the above four give hope of returning to the squad before the transfer deadline the cash will go the bank. waggy posted we'd be lucky to get 20 games from Dunn / Grella, I think he meant combined for the season? I'll go further, 20 to 25 games (full 90 minutes) from Dunn / Reid / Grella. I'm constantly asked to appreciate the club's position, I do, I've defended it and I still appreciate the financial reasoning behind the management decisions. This morning I'm bitterly disappointed and moving towards the views expressed by den and a few others over the lack of investment in the team. This is a step too far so the pay off had better be good. Lastly, and this is very important to me, Warnock is the last outfield player with whom I could identify. If I wore a shirt, it would be his name on the back. Other than Samba, who is the only valuable player left, we could sell the squad tomorrow and I wouldn't worry. Please can we have some footballers, real ones, not some bloke we've never heard off and will only see for a couple of seasons. Yesterday I came across a stall selling football and other sports photographs. It was the usual sort of thing but with a few gems hidden away. One photograph was of the Liverpool squad circa 1965 - 66. To my astonishment I could still name 9 of them. Who will be able to do that in 40 years time for any of today's squads? It's a sad state of affairs, when your team is a collection of foreign players earning a living. There's very little left to believe in. I need a hero.
Big Fat Sam Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I would rather have had both Warnock and a quality midfielder, however, I am told that originally Sam thought the injured lads would have been ready earlier and would have coped, but I understand now that this may take slightly longer and we simply cannot compete with a makeshift midfield nd Keith Andrews, who despite his hard work is light years away from being a premiership midfielder!! Great yet another bloke from some other country. I've always liked the fact we've had english players in our team, guess we're purging that this summer. What will this sale take us to a 15 million pound profit in transfers?? Yet another player who can cross is leaving the club, I smell Sam's 451 coming. PS yes I want a refund on both my shirts now, how can you use him for the adverts and then flog him???? Home and Away now have a Villa players name on, great!!!!!! This moves been in the offing for ages.
Kelbo Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 BFS, I understand where yo are coming from here but I simply dont see any quality British midfielders who are available, I say Rothen as he has been on trial here and has a wicked left foot and can pass a ball but I really think there will be another one too, who, is anyones guess!! As for the shirts, yes, I do agree, shouldnt sell shirts with names on if the player will be transferred in the August window, should be a refund!!
