Batty was an exceptional player. I'd have him in before Sherwood any day. I'll go with a formation fit for 2025; Friedel Salgado Nelsen Henchoz Le Saux Batty Tugay Warhurst Bellamy Shearer Duff I have Warhurst in there as he'd have been an England regular without injuries. He had it all. Proof of that was him being signed by Sheff Wednesday from Oldham as a central defender, they stuck him up front in a pinch and he scored goal after goal. Rovers signed him and he played central midfield like he'd always played there. Warhurst was the most versatile player I've ever seen in the sense he was excellent in every position. Most "utility men" are OK but not that great in any position. Warhurst was classy and composed at CB, comfortable at RB, cultured in midfield and didn't he have an insane scoring spell as a striker before going us from Wednesday? 3 Quote

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he have a great shot on him? Need to do some digging now. He was very good at Wednesday I recall. Also belted one past a certain Mr Schmeichel .... Moved to Palace then scored against us, think they got relegated that season or the season after too Edited 21 hours ago by ... Quote

Pedersen is an interesting one, for me though there's probably 3 I would have in front of him on the left. Unfortunately for any other left winger they have to get past Duff. The first season back in the Premiership he virtually kept us up single-handedly. 3 Quote
RevidgeBlue Posted 19 hours ago Posted 19 hours ago Wasn't that the game where Gerald Ashby decided "That won't do" and decided to send Berg off and award a penalty to even things up? 2 Quote

It was. I was in the Jack Walker lower very close to the incident and was convinced Berg got the ball. I've not seen it for a few years and it's even more a non-penalty. The move starts at 17.15 with a big boot from Schmeichel; Rovers were robbed at Old Trafford that season too. Lost 1-0. A perfectly good Sherwood header was disallowed for a push by Shearer on Roy Keane. Start at 0.45 if you don't want to see their goal. Watch Keane. He completely lost the flight of the ball. What made it worse IIRC was that Ashby refused to review the decision later and therefore Berg's red card stood and he was suspended. I had no problem with ref's making mistakes in pre-VAR days - even if I didn't like the decision - but that was just bloody minded. 2 Quote

A mistake I can accept but there was definitely something off there. There were rumours that Ashby had been shall we say feted by Ferguson and Man Ure over the years. 1 Quote
den Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago A good number of years ago we did a “rovers greatest ever team” discussion and vote. Lots of posters took part, arguing for their favourite player in each position. It would be interesting to read that again but it might not be on here now. 1 Quote

Friedel Berg Hendry Nelsen Le Saux Bentley Tugay Dunn Duff Bellamy Shearer Im 43 and agree with the only change being Batty for Dunn. Don't think Tugay and Dunn ever worked as a pair. Pretty mad that only four or five premier league winners get in. Shows how much the league improved 1995 to 2006 when we are picking players who finished sixth at best over first. Partly also how ridiculously good Shearer was in driving the team to win the league. 1 Quote

Although the 92/95 team wasn't a one-man band - as could be seen by how they maintained performances in the 2nd half of the 92/93 season without Shearer - it is fair to say that without him we wouldn't have win the league. The 2000's teams under Souness / Hughes / Allardyce were much more a sum of their parts and less reliant on an individual talisman. 1 Quote
