Like every club in this league for a few years, if the owners don’t put any money in we’d be screwed full stop. So they have to put money in. They just choose not to put as much in as 3 years ago.

Maybe it’s their choice. Maybe Suhail tells them not to.

But regardless we, as Blackburn Rovers, could match the offer and stay within the budget we were working to a couple of years ago. We choose not to.

12 months ago we were trying to keep Szmodics (apparently). What were we offering. Magic beans?

That’s because we suddenly had to sell for cash flow issues at short notice in a January market. Otherwise why would we have sold when in contention for play offs?

If they had hung on until summer they’d have had more bidders and got more. Or been promoted.

But I think the player himself would have surely for the sake of his own career been looking to move on in the summer.Yes

I think 18 million was too little for him and we would have got a bit more in the summer but its pie in the sky to be thinking we would have been getting bids like 30...40...million whilst playing for us a middle of the road championship side which we have become under this ownership. 

I reference the under 21s which matty blue keeps digging me about because if he was being recognised outside the club as a world class talent he would have been in their squads and bigger clubs than Palace would have been in for him.

Promoted we hadn't won in a game In ages and we where on a downward spiral.Wharton was not having a great season like the rest of them.Moments of great quality yes but not consistent.He wasn't playing like he did v Blackpool every week 

Yes we would have got a bit more but it would not have been a lot more

I could see the talent, and i disagreed with us selling him in that window.

My point is though why did none of the big boys not come in at that price?A world class talent and they let Palace have him for the 18 million?

Venkys don't re-invest money made on player sales in replacements. Doesn't matter if Adam Wharton had been sold for £150 million - none of it would have been ploughed back into playing staff.

As I said above, it’s because they fire-sold him at a relatively short notice in January. At that moment in time only Palace were looking, so we had no negotiating power and had to sell him.

As much as Prem clubs can throw money around,  most won’t throw £30mill around unplanned, and some would already have spent. Plus look at the trouble the likes of Newcastle  and Villa are having with PSR. 

Everyone knew you would have more interest, more bidders and thus a higher fee in July. But we don’t think more than the next bill we have to pay in front.

More interest I agree with but I honestly think it would have been clubs like Palace and other mid to lower teams bidding for him and iv said we would have got a bit more but not the 30 mill + that some on here seem convinced by

I think there was something about him that was putting the big boys off...there was an article about Newcastles interest but they didn't follow through with there interest as they had doubts over him.

Using funds in January,

FFP/PSR cycles mean that less money is available for clubs to spend in mid season as they have already done the bulk of their spending during the summer

Which is why you do not sell in January unless you are offered silly money

Tronstad will be gone by the end of the year, McLouglin is just through the door. 

Cantwell is the only viable option, the other have been sold or released.
