That's a bugger, I was brought up on that story. Replying to my own post (!) and here it is!! Its 1950! Look at that crowd and weep. 8 Quote

My first game was in the late 50s/early 60's. I always remembered it as home to Sheffield United and winning 3-1. But that game doesn't exist, so I either got the team we played wrong or the score. I was about 7 or 8 at the time and my Uncle Bob took me - I had to stay at his house in Bamber Bridge the night before (I lived in Rufford) and get the BBMS special to Ewood. It was my first night away from home and my first night with streetlights outside the house. 5 Quote

It was home to Blackpool 1966 and at halftime my dad said "that's it game over time to go home" None the wiser went home happy as a sandboy and been hooked ever since. Think I went to that game. I can see why your dad decided to bale out ! We were really poor. A little ginger haired lad ( Alan Ball ) ran us ragged. 2 Quote
Old Codger Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago Wandered on to the Blackburn End when the gates were opened after half time (20 mins from the end I seem to remember) just in time to see Rovers equalise against Aston Villa in their 3rd Division clash in Feb 1972, I was 9 at the time. The roar of the Blackburn End when Terry Garbutt scored scared the bejaysus out of me, and I remember feeling disorientated in the crowd streaming back up Livesey Branch Road. Not sure when I went to my first paid game, but the family got season tickets the year after, I think, as we were there for the Centenary season and it felt like we were part of the club by that time.. Glorious days, just round the corner of the mind.. 4 Quote

Leicester were top I think. We battered them and it could have been more. Ken Knighton was brilliant in midfield. Another season that started so well but just drifted to nothingness. I appreciate lives were shorter back then, but I wonder how many of the old boys there will have been around for the first League fixture just 62 years beforehand! Perhaps even the FA Cup glories in the years leading up to that... Quote
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted 19 hours ago Posted 19 hours ago I was just looking at the stats for the 1963-64 season that Arbitro mentioned. Andy McEvoy scored 32 goals in 37 league games.plus 4 goals in 4 cup games. Sammi reminded me a lot of Andy with his coolness in front of goal. 1 Quote

cesus Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago Rovers vs Wolves 1991, I think. I stood in the enclosure by the wall at the front of the stand with the other kids. A Wolves player scored an own goal very early into the match, but it was disallowed for a reason I cannot remember. Somebody shouted "he's disallowed it because their lad has forgotten which way he is kicking!!" ... 7 year old me believed that was the reason for a good few years afterwards! 3 Quote
speeeeeeedie Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago Mine was an FA Cup tie against Aston Villa. 1990, I think. It finished 2-2. I think my first match at Ewood was a midweek England youth international a year or so before. 1 Quote
bazza Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago The first game I remember was the season opener at Ewood in 1951 when we lost 5-1 to Sheffield United. I was eight years old at the time. But we obtained the services of Elvy, Kelly, Quigley and Holmes and that season finished really well with us losing out by one goal to the great Newcastle United (undeservedly) in the FA Cup semi final replay. My Dad had taken me on before this but I wasn't much interested. So may or may not have been on before 47er. It was usually Stand B of the Nuttall St. Later sometimes the Enclosure with me sitting on the bench over the wall. 6 Quote

Sat 25th October 1969. Rovers won 3-1 in front of 15,362. Scorers Knighton, Hill, Darling. Rovers - Blacklaw Rogers, Hunter, Mulvaney, Wilson. Connelly, Metcalfe, Knighton, Hill. Martin, Darling. No sub. Two other things I remember - Eamon Rogers played as a stand in right back and made it look easy, he looked like a natural. Malcolm Darling completely bamboozled Peter Shilton in the Leicester goal only for the goal to be ruled out for an off side out by the corner flag. Edited 15 hours ago by Tyrone Shoelaces 2 Quote

AAK Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago First game Rovers 7 Forest 0. My dad was a Leeds fan and grandad a Burnley fan, so didn’t start going until I was 8, always supported them but never got chance to go. My grandad god bless him took me, and then took me for years, what a great man he was. Sacrificed his own loyalties for me. 6 Quote

Hard to say. Newton was back for the next game, then missed the next 6. He played in the Preston game you mention on Dec 13 th but never played another game for us before his record transfer to Everton. Maybe he was “ unsettled “ but that wasn’t really his style. So you saw him play his last game for Rovers. Quote

rog of the rovers Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago (edited) Was taken by my dad to a game when I was 4, no memory. A 0-0 draw against Plymouth I believe. The first I have real memory of, what I’d call “my first game” was the Playoff Final at Wembley against Leicester aged 5. Memories of the day are hazy, but I remember the train ride down and the colours/sights/sounds/smells. The old Wembley being a pretty cool place to start. I remember my Dad coming home after that Newcastle semi-final defeat. I wasn't allowed to go because he thought I'd get crushed in the crowd! He was very disappointed that we lost, undeserved he felt. Quote
