Where has the info come from that we wore a Maltese Cross on our first shirts?

Very good to see the home shirt on sale so early in the summer, looking forward to seeing what design they come up with.

Also like the offer from the club about STH seeing the shirt the day before and on sale to them the day before

If they've gone with that then it really does show just how lazy they are.

There's no real evidence that the club wore a Maltese cross. That comes from a book that was written about football in general years after the foundation of the club. Numerous sources closer to the time mentioning that we wore the famous blue and white from the very beginning with no mention of a Maltese cross.

Given there's a debate as to whether the initial foundation of the club was 1874 or 1875, there's a lot we don't know about the very early days.

With the level of effort that they put into everything else they've no doubt just gone on that historic football shirt website and taken that as gospel.

That’s an almighty bit of fishing there, cast that one right out into the lake

I really think that it needed to be something unique that shouts '150th anniversary Blackburn Rovers'

If they want to use the Maltese Cross.....ok......but it really needs something above/below/around it as well to tell people the point behind it

Not many people outside of our support base are going to have the foggiest why we have a cross on our shirts or what the relevance of it is.

Now put it in a gold circle/shield with a ribbon beneath saying 'Blackburn Rovers 150 Years' and that does the trick.

I particularly like how the article on the website saying when the kit will be on sale contains a link to a form to fill in if you want be told when the kit goes on sale. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

It says season ticket holders can see the kit a day earlier, it doesn’t say they can buy it a day earlier.

It's does in the email I've received

We’re revisiting old debates…😉

As the sources closest to the time make absolutely no mention of white shirts or Maltese crosses then airing on the side of caution would make the most sense and leave it out.

Why not just have a blue and white shirt with no badges or sponsorship or anything? Surely that would be the most authentic?

There will be an anniversary shirt…when we had the focus group meeting this was one of the most popular requests…

A Simply fictional Kit.

I will qoute from my Grand Bazaar ( an official club publication) book dated 1895..

"It is to know that the pretty and becoming dress which has caused the Rovers appearance to be admired on every ground in Britain remains the same today as originally chosen, except that the Blue of the quatered jersey is of a lighter shade"

According to an extract from the early minutes - published in a programme dated 9th November 1909 - a meeting held on the 9th November 1875 states the following:

4. That the colours be : White jersey, blue and white skull cap, trousers optional.

      Proposed by H. Greenwood.

      Seconded by R. Higson.

a meeting held on the 15th November 1875 states the following:

1. That a Maltese cross be on the left breast in blue.

      Proposed by W. Baguley.

      Seconded by A. Constantine.

At the second meeting it is noted that a total of 15 caps were to be ordered.

Of course, this is all so long ago and, sadly, the original minutes are no longer around to confirm any of this.

I clearly remember an AGM when Chairman Bill Fox, in an answer to a shareholder, clearly stated that there was evidence to show that Rovers had never changed their colours. He went on to say the only variation had been the shade of blue, and the founding colours were Cambridge blue and white quarters, or halves in modern parlance.

I do wonder if the pictures showing a white shirt are in fact a very pale blue and white shirt which the quality of photography in the day, has has  not picked up.
