I've just looked it up as a result of what you wrote and we didn't play them 1949 at all. We did 47-8 and we did 49-50 so I'm assuming out must have been one of them. My Dad spoke of it a few times, I never queried it. He must have got the date wrong. That's a bugger, I was brought up on that story.

I could claim the record here. 1949 Rovers v Man City, aged 2, sitting on my Dad's shoulders in the Darwen End Enclosure. A very eventful match but I remember nothing of it! Most up and down season I ever remember. Started off well with succession of wins, followed by consecutive defeats, rinse and repeat. Hardly any draws. Hampered by poor goalkeeping and lack of strike force. Unable to beat the crap teams especially mid-week. The negatives were obvious but not addressed in January. in the end, another seventh, another lost opportunity. Off the field happenings strongly affected events on the field. You’re right about that side being so much better than now Gav. We only signed 2 first team players close season and we were top of the Premier League. I say “only” because they were 2 great players but the point stands. The vast majority of that promoted side were Premier League quality.
