  1. Yes, he was a bowler. From a long line of good Lancashire home-grown bowlers.... Statham, Lever, Shuttleworth, Allott, Anderson, Chapple, Mahmood.
  2. Mike England was very good too - left hand bat I think
  3. I always thought Botham's appearances for Scunthorpe were a publicity stunt. He was too big and cumbersome for a footballer (Alec Stock politely suggested he should stick to cricket) Apparently the Neville brothers were excellent cricketers too, particularly Phil. Would have made it as a pro. Mr Red Nose put a stop to his cricket
  4. Jimmy Cumbes, Lancashire lad who played in goal for Aston Villa. Balderstone played in the first division for Carlisle United and batsman for Leicestershire IIRC. Neal played for Lincoln City at left back (saw him play at Turf Moor). There were others going back - Denis Compton was the most famous footballer/cricketer
  5. That was a very good team, post Len Badger and Alan Birchehall (another ex Rover). Ted Hemsley played for Worcestershire I think, like Philip Neal, another footballer-cricketer. Those lads don't exist any more at elite level, more's the pity. Imagine being good enough to earn a living at football and cricket?
  6. I saw Tony Field play a few times for Sheffield United in the same team as Tony Currie....or am I imagining it? Memories play tricks. Anyway, you have to hand it to Furphy for getting him to play for us, never gave less than 100% though I'm surprised he wasn't popular with his team-mates. Goalscorers have to be selfish though.
  7. Puma Kings..... the best boots I ever had. Bought a new pair every season Superb boots, so comfy, loved playing in them. My past pair still in store, new, ready for the new season. Then I injured my knee, and that was the end
  8. Chaddy's right ...but for the wrong reasons. Mowbray won't be sacked because he's continuing to do a "very good job" (which he plainly isn't).. He's not going anywhere because the owners like and trust him and believe in the story he has spun them about his "long term project". Gives them an excuse to turn a blind eye to their English patient
  9. There's only one sort of "good" football ...... winning football. It's all a matter of taste anyway. Guardiola's Barcelona were always praised but its tip-tap passing game bored me to tears. I used to switch the Champions League games with his sides off.
  10. Other managers in the league including Pulis have said he's been very lucky to have excellent backing from the owners and seems to be under very little pressure to deliver. That's an easy ride
  11. Good old Rovers....always the fall guys
  12. Well done Tony. So predictable and saved myself £10 by not bothering to watch
  13. Tony's nosebleed has stopped now that we're losing
  14. Difference between that team and the one from 3 - 4 years earlier that was top of the old First Division for a time!
  15. I've been to Watford's ground a few times and I don't think it's Vicarage Road. You see yellow brick houses in the south east so it could be somewhere down there.
  16. Sir Keith ...... a Rolls Royce of a player. And look at that kit. Nothing has ever beaten it. Yellowy stone (?) houses in the background. Would have said Yarkshire but they're too clean😀
  17. Yes, think you're right there. Is NW the blond in the bottom photo?
  18. Sir Roger Jones, Billy Wilson, Derek Fazackerley, Dick Mulvaney (?), George Sharples I think, Stuart Metcalfe in there. The very best Rovers kit of all time...... round neck shirt, white socks and shorts.
  19. Loved that This is good too - never join a parish council https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-55946252
  20. I saw Don Martin having a kick-about with some friends on a Sunday morning in Witton Park the day after a match at Ewood. It would be on a social media now and he'd probably get fined by the club.
  21. Who was the player Fergie elbowed in the face right in front of the referee and the Nuttall Street stand v Coventry, about 1967? He got sent off - first one I'd ever seen
  22. Trevor Hockey - Birmingham and Wales IIRC had a beard too. Dirty barsteward
  23. Yes definitely. Beards were an oddity in those days. Very good player and driving force behind that great Villa team that won the European Cup.
  24. Yep, the horror when he said Blackburn Rovers 1 ......... voice rising.and you knew we'd lost .....
  25. Duncan McKenzie! How did we manage to sign him - the lure of Howard Kendall I suppose. He was one of many maverick players around in the 1970s - players like Bowles, Worthington, Currie, Marsh etc. You don't see them now, perhaps Cantona and Le Tissier were the last of the breed.
