  1. £7m plus add-ons, for what? Private hospital treatment to remove the splinters from his derriere warming the wooden bench ?
  2. For £7m he should not only be taking Graham's place from day one he should also be looking a half decent player and scoring goals. At the moment he wouldn't get a game down at Pleasington.
  3. For £7m fans were entitled to expect more than a bench warmer.
  4. For Rovers, £7m is a very large sum to pay for someone who is clearly not good enough at present to play in the first team. We're not Man City or Liverpool who collect young players in the hope that one of them might turn into a good player, we need players now who can make a difference. The Brereton signing as many fans see it makes no sense at all
  5. Absolutely no chance of top 6. The team and the manager aren't good enough. Far too many drawn games we should have won - yesterday was another example
  6. We concede too many soft goals - even against very poor sides. The defence is anything but "solid"
  7. Poor result in view of how the match went. Can't see us making a tilt at the playoffs - players not good enough and manager too negative. Expect the same against Brum next
  8. We beat Forest but couldn't get the ball past Shilton, who was in brilliant form. Ian Miller had an excellent game and Garner should have scored at least a couple. Justin Fashanuy got the winner IIRC - one of the few goals he scored for Forest where he flopped after a big money signing
  9. I met Bobby Saxton a few times. He said he considered it a privilege to be manager of Rovers. A very likeable man who did a very good job.
  10. Message to Boro fan - will Chapman be in the team ?
  11. Note on title thread: It's MiddlesBROUGH not Middlesborough. Good club Boro - much like us, working town club with a loyal fan base that has produced many excellent players over the years. Watched them many times in the 1980s when working in the north east. John Neal was manager with Craig Johnston, David Hodgson, David Armstrong in the team Tony won't want to lose and will be a full negative defensive mode. We have a good record against the NE clubs but can't see better than a 2-1 defeat
  12. Broken legs are pretty rare these days compared to the past when cracked bones were more commonplace. Maybe the tackling technique of the players is better these days and is one reason for the decline but it's fair to say the liberal use of yellow and red cards has made the game less physical and less of a spectacle - not a good development in my view.
  13. I went to the West Ham replay - fantastic atmosphere on Ewood that night. Queued up to get in the Riverside and missed kickoff and by the time I got in we were already ahead. It was the relegation season - why couldn't we play like that in the league ? Memories are fading but didn't we lose 1-0 at home to Sheff Wed in the quarter-finals ?
  14. Yes, letting Byrom go was a poor decision. Memories are hazy but I remember him getting a knock early in a match, carrying on throughout the 90 minutes limping and going on to score hat-trick , was it the 4-0 FA Cup tie with Arsenal in the relegation 1965-66 season ? Good local player from the back streets. Where are his successors? Britt and Gilliver were both crocks when we signed them - what was the club thinking ?
  15. Horrible draw - yet again. All those minnows and the chance to have a nice run and we get that lot...away. The FA have never liked us since we beat the Old Etonians in the 1882 Final.
  16. Britt had a "wonky" knee when we signed him. In other words, he'd done his cruciate, but we still went ahead and splashed out £25,000, which was alot of money in 1965. West Ham laughed all the way to the bank. O'Mara took Rovers apart in a match at Brentford circa 1971 (yes, I was there). He looked a world beater that day and I couldn't believe our luck when we signed him. How wrong I was.
  17. If Brereton has a strong work ethic, no ego, and wants to learn and improve and listen to others he'll make a go of it in the game. He has the physical attributes but does he have the mental toughness and really want to succeed as a footballer ?
  18. Brilliant analysis by a Wednesday fan on their defensive failings at Ewood - can Mowbray sign him up to help our defensive woes ? Makes you realise how bad Wednesday were yesterday., yet we still managed to concede 2 goals https://www.owlstalk.co.uk/forums/topic/278560-we-have-a-serious-defensive-issue-sorry-its-a-long-one/?page=1
  19. Intensity and desire - where was it at Wigan and Preston ? How do the players explain it ?
  20. It';s hard for wingers as they get older. They don't have the zip or spring in their legs to get past defenders, and they get caught in possession more often. Every so often, though, they roll back the years and turn on the old magic and play like they used to - I've seen it many times over the decades, including Duggie and Waggie. Conway is unlikely to be able to replicate today's performance for some time, if ever at all. It was a great reminder of how he used to play though and old fashioned wing play - great to watch.
  21. Important win today after the last 2 non-performances. Why can't they show passion like that every week? On the downside another 2 goals conceded. Mowbray would do better to spend money on a top defensive coach rather than new players next month
  22. Mowbray's teams - don't you just love them? Always guaranteed to concede goals, even against poor opposition. Tony doesn't learn
  23. Shame about the 2-1. Denise sends her thanks !
  24. This is how Conway used to play a few years ago - proper old fashioned Scottish winger
  25. Now then Tony, are we going to sit back and try to defend this lead for 25 minutes or are you going to do something positive ?
