Dalglish paid £3.3m for Shearer and sold him for £15m. He paid £5m for Sutton and we sold him for £10m.

So what's the point Waggy? Hope you're not saying we shouldn't spend money on players just because Megson has no idea how to spend it. There are plenty of leagues available to clubs who don't spend money.

:rover: it shows den spending money for the sake off it is wrong, ince needed time to assess the squad, and the younger players at the club.spending money to stave off critisism is foolish :brfc:

but then agian Waggy

spending money on a player that is NEEDED staves off the threat of a relegation battle and ensures the club continues to move forwards rather than backwards or indeed certainly stops the club from going stale.

After all, Rovers have been the victims of such a situation before when we lost our Premiership spot due to relegation.

He does, and if you say he doesn't, well then there's simply no point discussing anything at all because no-one is allowed to have an opinion on here these days!

Seconded.

Are we in a relegation battle?

Yes....same as everyone else until we pass 40 points!

OK I won't bother with the wager, too many variables and unknowns involved.

What I will say is that IMO there 'should' be at least 10 million available after all the sales, compo, TV money, existing budget etc... and that is a low estimate.

Let's see what we spend, if anything in January. Maybe we'll keep our powder dry for the summer. ;)

Ince has already mentioned that we need to step up our search for a new midfielder following long term injuries to Dunn & Reid. Also we are looking for a right winger (and they dont come cheap).

Stop being so negative, stop trying to put a downer on everything associated with the club, and support the club that you apparently support (Yeah right!).

It wasn't publicised at the time but Rovers "broke the bank" on wages and transfers back in the summer of 2006 so the Board has a track record of OKing financially adventurous spending (in the context of the Rovers) when they see the circumstances are right.

For circumstances to be right this January, two things have to happen:

1) The Board has to be comfortable and supportive of its Management's transfer selections and selling decisions- something which I suggest had evaporated in August this year. Remember how long the Fowler and Andrews deals took and nicko's comments asking whether the Board would back the Manager or not? There is a big difference between the destructive Board behaviour micromanaging and second guessing the football manager (which doesn't happen at Ewood) and positive Board behaviour bearing responsibility for the overall well-being of the business and asking WTF when they see the Manager's list of picks and chops.

2) There has to be value in the market. Anything could happen between now and 1 January and probably will do but if the window opened tomorrow the runners and riders would look like this in all probability:

Unlimited spend- Chelsea (but no need to buy), Man City (need half a team)

Up to £50m to spend- Spurs and they need a new team, Villa if they find the right people

0 to £30m to spend- Rovers, Sunderland

Marginal net spenders- Boro, Fulham if they are in difficulty, Hull, West Brom, Stoke (the promoted clubs spent relatively little in the summer and all now see a prospect of staying up so will spend in a responsible manner).

Will want to balance the books- Arsenal, Man U; with Wigan, Bolton and Everton unless those three are in deep trouble when they might bet the club.

Have to sell first to raise money to buy- Newcastle, Liverpool (but if there is no serious buyer by January, both those clubs could simply become have to sell)

Have to sell- Portsmouth, West Ham

It really comes down to how desperate the four at the bottom of that list are and whether the financial crisis is tipping some Italian, French or Spanish clubs over the edge as well. If the sellers rush to offload their goodies, they could flood the market setting up a lot of value for the six net spenders at the top especially if the ten budget balancers in the middle decide they are going to "pass" on this window like Man U have already said they will do.

How much will Rovers spend? It won't be 0 and it won't be £30m but both extremes are within the club's capability.

LDR Our powder is that dry come January it will have all blown away.

If City or any other club come in for Santa Cruz Rovers will without doubt flog him.

Never mind we can stumble along taking trialists for the month of January and get absolutley nowhere,it will be just like the summer all over again.
