LeftWinger Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 I've already explained why that's a very different scenario. Read the post again. Goodwillies only been a regular for 18 months - his scoring record is decent in that time. Tugay wasn't a massive success in Scotland, or Charlie Adam, and they've been great in England. To say that his lack of goals in Scotland means not many Premier League goals is a bit unfair that's my point mate.

Yup, and Feguson was the outstanding player in Scottish football for the last twelve years - Larsson aside - but was relatively weak at Rovers. You've got to give the lad a chance.

It is very fair to say that if you're not scoring goals in a much easier league, you're unlikely to be scoring them in a much harder league without a sudden huge improvement. If he's a squad player and gets eight to ten goals from, say, 10 starts and 15 sub appearances then that wont be too bad. I'm not saying he's going to be a failure, just I think considering we've got £22m in transfer fees if Kalinic goes it will be disappointing if he's the main striker.
JAL Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Heres to Goodwillie sowing the seeds of good fortune for the Rovers in the premiership.
goodwillie_style Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 with better players playing around him he should be able to show his talents more, i bet he didnt have a player like hoilett playing in the same team as him in scotland

I'm excited by the signing because of his potential. He's big enough in stature to play a part for us this season, but being the main man upfront in his first season in a newer and tougher league would be a huge burden. If he hits double figures this season he'll have done a great job imo.
Henwah Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 To T-Rex - "I Love to Boogie" We Love Goodwillie, We Love Goodwillie, David Good-willie, David Good-Willie, We Love Goodwillie on a Saturday night Not sure it's going to catch on in the BBE though. They ain't made a noise for 3 years or so other than to boo Andrews so I wouldn't worry too much
booth Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Good job the defences here are of a similar standard to the SPL then. True, but there is some truly awful defending in the PL as well. How many times as Roberts found himself with a goal scoring opportunity and put it wide or skied it. Hopefully Goodwillie will put those away. Hopefully. But like you I do hope he isn't our main striking target, we could do with someone proven.
RoyRover Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 I'm glad we've finally signed someone. I saw this guy a couple of times last year when Dundee were playing Celtic and he always looked good. He's got pace, is tricky and scores goals (in Scotland). Hope that he can do the same for us. He's young, he can develop and we got him at a good price.

bazza Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Tomorrow is August 4th and WE STILL HAVEN"T SIGNED ONE PLAYER. Today is August 3rd and now we have. Whoopee. Great signing. I think the lad will do well here at Rovers. Welcome Mr Goodwillie. I cannot wait to see you in action. This statement is incorrect. Third signing confirmed by Sky sources if you count the little South American. See link below which says GW is Rovers first signing of the summer Rovers sign Goodwillie
RibbleValleyRover Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 I like many others do have doubts over the player when you consider his goalscoring record, the quality of the league he has come from and how well on paper it looks like he will fit into the system/tactics our manager is going to use. But I will back the player and give him a decent amount of time to see if he can prove that my doubts were unfounded. Welcome to the club David!
jim mk2 Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 If this lad is such a good player why were only Rovers and Rangers making serious bids for him ? It's a big step-up for him in terms of quality of opposition but he's young and should improve. Looking forward to seeing him play.
UtopianParadigm Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 chant.. to 'cmon and do the conga' goodwille.. but not as big as samba! how long til that's removed! ?? hehe I think we have a winner.

It's a big step-up for him in terms of quality of opposition but he's young and should improve. Looking forward to seeing him play. We weren't the only 2 clubs interested. Reports suggest there was a large number of clubs keeping tabs on him, but only us and Rangers were putting in bids. Other clubs undoubtedly had other priorities. How many players actually trigger a mass bidding war between more than 2-3 clubs anyway?
cruz Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Hopefully Goodwillie didn't attend the Scottish arm of the Niko Kalinic school of poise and balance

Goodwillie has been around for a few years but hasn't been snapped up by one of the bigger clubs. Of course all clubs have priorities but the best talents move to the best clubs early. Goodwillie was the subject of a bidding "war" between 2 impoverished clubs for the princely sum of £2m plus. This is not to say the lad does not have potential and cannot be a very good player down here but the low fee and quality of bidder does suggest he is not seen as a significant talent. .

You're being unnecessarily rude as usual. Plenty of respected coaches and pundits in Scotland rate the player highly and are very optimistic about him. His former manager described him as a "snip" in reference to his transfer fee although that may not be appropriate when referring to a Goodwillie.

He's 22. 10 clubs were supposed to have made enquiries, and his charges were only dropped about 10 days ago. By the way, the double entendre in Kamy's front page post made me lol Goodwillie joins Rovers from Dundee United on a 4 year deal, the fee has not been disclosed but is believed to be £2 Million plus add ons. Rovers beat off competition from a number of clubs including Glasgow Rangers who had a reputed 7 bids turn down for the highly rated striker.

His former manager described him as a "snip" in reference to his transfer fee although that may not be appropriate when referring to a Goodwillie. But you are missing the point. The backlash starts now, he's cheap, no-one else really wanted him, SPL is crap, didn't score 100 goals last season, Venkys signed him, got a silly name, you get my drift. The depressives v the optimists. (realists sitting on the fence)
CrazyIvan Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 It always makes me laugh when people say, 'He signed for us, nobody else wanted him therefore he must be crap and we shouldn't have signed him...' or words to that effect. I'll just refer those people to the likes of Alan Shearer, Matt Jansen, Damian Duff, Roque, Bellamy, Big Chris, Braveheart, oh and Ciccio... (That last one's a joke btw...) Welcome on board David, I hope it's the best move for you and for Rovers.
Gav Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Great this site, I love it: "Sign some players" "He's not good enough" "Why do we want Raul" "Milito? to old" "Goodwillie, not good enough" "Why haven't we signed anyone" "Striker from the SPL, rubbish" "Sign young up and coming players, but not him" "Venkys have no money, 2m for Goodwillie" "Why don't they spend any cash" Yadda yadda yadda.
Ozz Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Never seen him play, so does anyone know if he is a target man, or more of a in the hole type? Can anyone compare him to someone who has played for Rovers in the past please? (Serious question please no daft stuff)
