[Archived] More Respect And Awareness Needed When Posting

Recommended Posts

Having read all posts so far my summary of the reason for this thread is that a possibly new poster, of previously unknown age, seemed to make a habit of deliberately baiting other posters, the majority of whom could quite safely be assumed to be adults (at least in age!), into a row on the more lively threads, got called out, cried and will not come out to play again.

Welcome to the grown up world!!!

I tried to like your post All Rover Asia but hit the stupid "you have reached your quota of positive votes for the day", necessitating a new post that the "like" facility was meant to obviate.

Just had a quite aggressive message in my inbox from a poster calling me a knob, saying I wouldn't dare mouth off face to face (which would greatly amuse anyone who knows me in real life), all because I pointed out how odd their logic was whilst they asked another poster if they were smoking something for having a different view.

Nice place we've got here.

Edit- and they've just followed it up with an implied threat. Hooray for keyboard warriors.

Your not alone in that one, although no threats. Amazing how some and in particular that one troll about looking for a bite then can't handle it when they get one.

True. With all the differerent types of social media and the way young people keep in touch with each other and discuss things that matter to them (including Rovers) I don't see why any young person would come on this messageboard.

And Jim has missed the point by a country mile.

The issue is about being civil to each other, young people DO read these pages and we all have a responsibility to be civil, respectful and tolerant of other people's views.

Two questions Stuart:

Why can't an older person have a discussion with a younger one? Surely this is how both generations learn?

Secondly at 61 I'm very happy, in fact see it as real progress, that I can relate to young people and they to older generations in ways my parents could never have done. Surely it's only people with closed minds who wouldn't want to have the discussion?

61 Paul ?

You look like you are mid to late 40's.

Oh, and Gav looks like a 20 year old.

On topic.....I agree with the topic.....I love you all :-)

Got to say I agree with Gav

we tried the self moderation thing and it just doesn't work that well, people need to converse with a certain level of respect we aren't enemies after all

This is a forum for adults not children. I know some come on but they go on porn sites too. It's not for us to accommodate them.

Self-moderation is a nice idea, but we all know that someone whose interests aren't primarily for the community, but for themselves, will ruin it. This particularly applies in the ICBNF section. No thread can be left to run without being hijacked by the same few posters every couple of days having a personal swipe at each other. Take a look at the General Election thread right now. There's been some good debate recently, but lo and behold, it starts topping itself up with crap from the same culprits.

I think getting a moderation team together is the right way forward. We've got 1 at the moment, which is nowhere near enough to keep on top of things. Perhaps the rules of moderating need to be more fluid - if a thread is going of the rails and getting into a personal slanging match, clean it up, warn/ban the culprits, and return the thread to something readable. I think that's all we want.

There is one answer that will stop it in it's tracks,

End the anonymity,

That also applies to the rest of the tinternet, especially platforms like Facebook, twitter etc

What!!!!

Do you mean "Pardon"? Are you hard of hearing?

Pretty sure it's for both Al. BRFC doesn't insist on adults only does it?

Suit yourself Gord. but I have no wish to converse with children.

There will always be differences of opinion which will develop into arguments. People should realise this and not be so mard.

I agree with ending anonymity, as it will make people think twice before hiding behind a random username.

Yet this is one of the reasons why many of the posters of times gone by are turned off and why the read quality has nose-dived; the General Election thread, for example, isn't worth sifting through when it's a slanging match between two or three people. What good does it do, Al? Such a shame - a few days ago it was worth reading and posting in.

It's a messageboard. It's never going to solve all the country's troubles. It's just a bit of fun. Don't take it so seriously Phil. Life's too short.

Totally agree. Was an interesting thread a few days ago. Look at the last few pages and it's just bickering between the usual suspects.

That just adds to it

Adds to what? General election thread and for three pages we got ourselves a willy waving contest. No link to the thread just insults. As I said obvious who the main culprits are. It's the same ones on every thread. Respect and awareness should be not using insulting language against fellow members. Arguing is fine, healthy on a MB but the rest is not.

Now quite an interesting thread has been locked. Frustrating.

Another lively thread locked because of a few mard arses who do nothing but moan. It's pathetic.

Yep and yet another insulting PM from TJ to boot, which I can't reply to via PM, thereby keeping it off the MB because he blocks PM replies
