To be honest, overall the refereeing standard in the Championship isn't any better than what I've seen during "Sunday league" standard football.

This is a Premier League Referee on account of the TV cameras.

He is playing the home team card, and probably mindful that he may have to referee their games next season. There's a conflict of interest in these matches, much like the West Ham game. As good or bad as they are, all football league games should have football league referees.

If Akpan's penalty incident was at the other end and the ref had given it to Burnley, there'd be some incredibly angry posts on this forum (me among them). Blame Akpan for going down so easily, not the ref who avoided being conned.

What's your point?

Had it been at our end we would have said soft penalty but it would still have been a penalty, just like that was. The burnley player pushes Akpan in the back,he loses balance and then goes down - easily or not that is a penalty and as others have said anywhere else on the pitch a foul is given

That's what Prem referees are programmed to do isn't it? We're screwed unless we can score an amazing goal.

Not sure it always is a free kick anywhere else, the reality is that those aren't always given (especially as penalties). Akpan could very easily have stayed on his feet, it wasn't a particularly bad coming together at all.

Sometimes they get given, sometimes they don't. The uncertainty in the Sky Sports studio says a lot about how much of a stonewall penalty it was. Personally, I would much prefer that Akpan stays on his feet there as he would probably have had a chance to score.

Penalty for Akpan? We having a laugh, he went down like a lump of s**t

Outside the box that's a foul every single match.

There was zero intent about Duffy's pen but the rules are the rules.

They just need to be applied consistently.

Burnley are so disciplined and well drilled that giving them a goal start is practically suicide. So naive by Duffy to not have the awareness! Had that penalty not happened id have said it was a pleasing half for us, keep going boys!!!!!

Should have played Watt rather than Bennett. Is Watt on the bench?

No problem with Bennett being in the team, he's contributed at least. Watt should have been on instead of Grimes imo. If it's a fitness thing then Grimes could always have come on after 60-65 mins.

I'd take one of Grimes or Gomez off (likely Gomez), get Bennett wide and put Watt on up front to buzz around.

We haven't played badly, just a daft penalty given away :/

It would just be nice to be on the right side of a contentious decision for once.

Now that point I agree with - however, it seems harsh to berate and criticise the referee so much for making a contentious decision against us when it was something of a 50/50. Can't complain if it gets given but it would have been a soft one, and Akpan should have stayed on his feet.
