1000% correct, I find its very annoyed how much some people rubbished what Southgate actually did but its been our best performances since 1966 and 1996.

plenty of good centre backs like Stones Guehi, Tomori, Branthwaite, Colwill, Konsa

tbh, I think Wharton would benefit from a summer of rest and being fresh for next season

Centre backs ranging from good to average to totally out of the picture to well past their best.

So no top level centre backs that a team with supposed aspirations of winning major tournaments would expect to have.

Absolutely, but equally people would have said that about their team. You can win it without brilliant players in every position, but theres no harm in admitting that we are weak in that position.

I saw a lot of Pezzella here for Betis, lead the back line and more often than not was in the right place to head clear or get a block in - class player. He wasn't first choice for Argentina during the tournament, so whoever was infront of him must've been very good. This is, of course, said with some bias on my part 😜

My less-than-informed impression, which is based only really on highlights, is that Wharton has not been at his best since returning from groin injury and surgery mid-season. Though he has been starting, Palace have rotated their many CMs, including Kamada, Hughes, Lerma and Devenny. Wharton didn't play in their last game, if I remember rightly.

My guess is that there is a lot of confirmation bias going on. Every sliver of evidence being used to build the argument that Wharton is currently a world-beater - overlooking where he's not doing so well, compared to before.

It makes sense for Wharton to rest and get back to his best. Palace failed in their duty of care, I believe, in playing him when he was suffering from injury.

I'm agreeing it's not our best position but we've always done well defensively at tournaments with the right set up especially under Southgate

I think we have often set up quite defensively but even individually, we are much worse now because we had the likes of Stones, Walker and even Shaw who are all a shadow of their former self.

Agree but tbf ghuei really stepped up at the euros. He was probably our best player and konsa has proven to be a good champions league defender

But Walker and Stones when at their peak were key components of a side that were winning multiple league titles and various other honours.

Guehi should be playing for top 6 team. Konsa has done well at Villa. Colwill and Branthwaite are developing and getting better. Tomori is playing for AC Milan and surprise a PL team hasn't looked to sign him

He took a hell of a whack to the head in the final. You could tell something was wrong when he came back onto the pitch. He ran back on like a maniac.

I read that Glasner said the week after that Wharton was sleeping in the afternoons for hours at a time which was very unusual for him.

Who cares at this point? It could have been £300m, none of it would have been reinvested.

No surprise Wharton pulled out of 21's.

Firstly, health always has to be number one priority.  He took one almighty whack and as @Tyrone Shoelaces said, the way he came back on to the pitch was a clear indication all was not well.  Head trauma, no matter how it's suffered, can have devastating future consequences - it finished Matt Jansen.

Secondly, I think it's an insult that Tuchel has overlooked him for a second consecutive time.  Just maybe, Adam needs to be with a Liverpool, Arsenal etc to get the recognition his talent so richly deserves.

Adam is going to have to get completely fit to get the recognition he deserves. He completed the full 90 minutes just 3 times in the Premier League last season.

Being at Palace didn't prevent Henderson and Eze from being selected and had he been fit Guehi would probably have been selected as well.

Yes, and Bellingham signed for Sunderland for a reported 2 million 6 months before Wharton left us. 

So...what's your point? 

He's just been promoted to the Premier League, he's the brother of one of the world's most famous current footballers, and he's played twice as many matches for Sunderland (his second club) as Wharton played for us. 

I don't think his transfer proves the point that you think it does.
