Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted June 28 Moderation Lead Posted June 28 A signing that seems stranger and more pointless by the day. 1 Quote
Trinidad Rover Posted June 28 Posted June 28 Now three managers that clearly don't rate him or think he's got the potential. Bizarre move. Good luck to him 1 Quote

Bizarre move. Good luck to him I suppose the hope is that like Wharton & Carter, who were both still getting loans out at his age, a few lower league loans gets him ready eventually. Although personally see him falling behind both Atcheson & Litherland this year (2 players who the club would have been aware of when they signed O'Riordan as it was only a year and a half ago) Edited June 28 by KentExile Quote
davulsukur Posted June 28 Posted June 28 This move must have been on the cards for a while? He got less than a week of Pre-season in. He's gotta go there and do well. 1 Quote
Forever Blue Posted June 28 Posted June 28 It’s a good loan for O’Riordan - League 1 and will be playing against better players week-in-week-out. As Kent says, Carter and Wharton both did really well out on loan and it aided their progression immensely. 1 Quote

It's signings like this we actually should be making - young, talented players from L1 and L2. Ones that have a few games under their belts and stand out at that level, but aren't quite yet of interest to Premier League teams. The £40m or so from Wharton, Szmodics, Raya et al has been completely spaffed on running costs now, so our owners don't have to put their hands in their pockets, but realistically half of that should have been spent on the best young players from Crewe, Charlton, Reading etc. If you want to run a model where you develop players and sell them on, you have to actually invest in the players first. The Academy will bring some through - but as we're seeing the most promising ones get pinched before they can sign professional contracts. I've no idea what to make of O'Riordan - I've barely seen him play. I hope this loan works for him. It seems he played well when he went back to Crewe, so there's still a player in there somewhere, but he quickly needs to push on as he's 21 now. 2 Quote
arbitro Posted June 28 Posted June 28 O'Riordan showed some good form in the latter part of the season for Crewe and chipped in with a few goals. The odd thing about the loan to Doncaster is that Ismael hasn't seen him play in any game for Rovers so what is the thinking behind loaning him out less than a week into pre season. If it's paving the way for a new arrival then surely it would make sense to let him go once another player has actually signed. Still at least our Head of Loan Players will have something to do. Strange. 2 Quote

Strange. Sense and Rovers in the same article ? That’s not something you see very often. 3 Quote

RoverCanada Posted June 30 Posted June 30 (edited) another comprehensive KentExile loans thread? hell yeah. Repeating myself, but I'd heard from a Cambridge supporter that he was in a bit of an unlucky situation at a poor L1 side last year (this was compounded by making a few errors early on...), so he may not have gotten a truly fair shake there. Then seemed to manage fine with another half-season in L2 to try to salvage his year. Taking a step back, he's only turning 22 in Oct. Despite last year being a bit of a step back, a CB managing regular L2 minutes at ages 19-21 is pretty promising overall. Getting loaned out so early is rather strange. Taking an optimistic view, this should help him get settled early and its perhaps a good sign that a L1 club is immediately keen to sign him to be a starter, rather than trying to fit him in somewhere in late Aug. But, can also easily imagine Rovers are simply trying to minimise their wage costs for the year, and obviously concerning if VI doesn't even see him as competition to our current CBs (Hyam and Carter are obviously ahead, but he should be 3rdish at the moment with Batth and Sanderson out the door...) DutchRover Posted June 30 Posted June 30 I'd agree that having a full pre-season with his loan club makes sense, should allow him to bed-in properly and learn how they want to play, plus get to know his CB partners. I still have hopes for him, he has all the tools to be successful and as others have pointed out, Wharton and Carter were also similarly slow bloomers. Incidentally, getting players in early for a full pre-season was what we were promised this year... always easier to let players go than to bring them in for us. 1 Quote
