To say we have our share of big lads we don’t defend them very well at times. We got lucky with that lad interfering with a header that looked like going in. That goes in and yesterday’s result could have been different. The same centre half got on to the next one as well.

I think he might already be in place. Certainly last week against Southampton there was someone I didn’t recognise (and definitely not Benson) on the touchline shouting instructions at every corner and I remember thinking that we must have appointed a new set piece coach

I don't really understand how this is an actual job role, it's not a complicated task to be half decent at set pieces. 

Still, given how shite ours are I suppose it may be a positive move....

Speaking of set pieces what about that one yesterday when we had everybody back in our box and Leicester had two players just waiting for a squared ball for a shot a goal. Even the dogs in the street could see what was going to happen but none of our players could.

Alot of teams have these type of coaches

So? Doesn't really make it valid.

One of the masters of set pieces was Tony Pulis, except he didn't do anything extraordinary at all, just worked hard in training and adapted the players to suit their strengths. It was seen as the way forward for lesser teams like Stoke at the time and to an extent the dingles under Dyche.

Now it seems to be the latest fad even with the so called bigger teams.

Villa and Arsenal have had once for few seasons..

Just watch Arsenal once and you'll see how any team can benefit from some real set pieces training.

Saw a stat before this round regarding Arsenal:

Goals from:

Set pieces - 1st in the league 

Penalties - 2nd in the league

Goals from open play - 17th in the league

Table position - 1st

 

It's a big part of the modern game. I hope they get rid of the long throws by adjusting the rules before next season.

If its improve the team and we start being a bigger threat from set pieces. 

Im not against the idea. Although it was a fair question by ossydave to at least ask why, and one you didnt answer properly.

It’s hardly a full time job, is it? 
How long do they spend in training on set pieces, out of general training?

We did technically have a set piece coach by default when Eustace was here, I do not recall us being particularly great with set pieces then

The most niche role I recall seeing was a throw in coach for Liverpool a few years back, wonder how many hours a week he worked?

Look at how many goals Arsenal have scored from set pieces or Villa over the 12 months. That's what a set pieces coach can do

But also defensively make us more solid.

Very little I guess.

Maybe he's a set piece "analyst" instead of coach as he will spend most of his time analysing other teams routines for ideas and also for when we play against them etc.

Set pieces have become increasingly important in the game today in terms of data.  Most clubs have a set piece coach.  Arsenal have become far more potent from corners etc., since they appointed a set piece coach. 

It's not the football I grew up with in the early sixties, but the game today is completely different.  At the end of the day we have to progress and change with the times.  Having said that, I much preferred the football of the early sixties to what I watch, particularly in the Premier League, today.

We also have to learn, how to defend set pieces as well.
