Huddersfield Town 29.12.19

Tony has tried to be far too clever today and it has resulted in our worst performance for weeks. I can't ever remember a time that Mowbray has changed formations during a match and it has resulted in us performing better. -

We started playing 4-4-2 with the wrong players on the pitch, now we have the players on the pitch to play 4-4-2 effectively we have changed our system and look even more of a mess. -

Elliott Bennett is never and has never been a right back, how Mowbray cannot see it is beyond me. -

We are playing in a style that doesn't suit our players. We continue this trying to play out from the back even though more often ends up in a chance for the opposition rather than us. And we are trying to play 4-4-2 but we have no wingers. -

Lovely cross and a good header. -
All in all a very disappointing week after such positives in the weeks previous, the fact the Walton was probably our best player in both games says it all. In my opinion the manager made too many changes for both games, yes it worked at Bristol but more often than not it will result performances like we have seen this week. At this time of year I can understand 2, 3 maybe even 4 changes but 6-7 is too many. I had hoped that Bell may have turned a corner after his performance at Bristol but sadly not his feeble, half hearted 'defending' for the penalty yesterday is the story of his Rovers career.

Whittingham, Hart, Samuel, Davenport and if you want to include loan players the lad from West Brom, whose name escapes me at the moment. -
Bristol City (A) - Bradley Dack's Christmas Break

Absolutely delighted after that a complete away performance. I was surprised to say the least when I heard the line up but those players who have been out the team played with a real hunger to take their opportunity and to stake a claim for their place in the team giving the manager plenty of headaches for his next selection. Walton 7- Not over worked but dealt well with crosses and made what looked like a good save from a deflected effort in the first half. Nyambe 8- Continued his fantastic form, he's always been very solid defensively but he is now growing in confidence going forward a couple times today in the first half he flew past the Bristol full back. Tosin 8- After a dodgy game mid week he was back on form today. Lenihan 8- Immense, won every header and made a great block in the first half as I think the shot was going in. Bell 8- After quite rightly being dropped he looked like a different player to the one we have had for the last 2 years. A danger going forward including a good run to win the corner for the first goal. But it was his defensive worked that really impressed me he played with a fire in his belly, getting stuck in closing his man down and blocking crosses. Without a doubt his best performance in a Rovers shirt and by some distance. Travis 7- Full of energy and along with Johnson dominated the midfield. Johnson 9- Best player on the pitch, bossed the game quite literally from the first minute until the last, used his presence to physically dominate their midfield. Holtby 8.5- Showed real class today when in possession they couldn't get near him and had to resort to just fouling him. But he also showed plenty of hard work when out of possession. Bennett 7- Is much better suited to playing further forward, where his positional play isn't as important. Also he can hassle his opponent but when he overs commits which he does do he has plenty of protection behind him. Brereton 5- Absolutely shot of confidence a couple times he got into decent areas but seemed clueless as to what to do. One plus point was that early on he went shoulder to shoulder with Ashley Williams with Williams ending up on the floor. Not a lot to get excited about I know but I am afraid is small pickings as far as he is concerned. Gallagher 8- Worked tirelessly from start to finish, superb in the air and really deserved a goal for his performance which I thought he had when his volley produced a very good save from the keeper. Armstrong 8- The perfect sub to bring on today with his pace and as well as his goal he also caused them plenty of other problems Rothwell- Not on for long but was very neat and tidy in possession. Also today the behaviour from their goal keeper to try and get Sam Gallagher sent off was one of the most embarrassing things that I have ever seen on a football pitch, it was absolutely pathetic. Although he is probably just reflecting the behaviour of his repulsive, squeaky little manager. -
Swansea City (A) - F*ck it, let's make it five!

On the back of such a good run and taking the lead through another good goal the following 85 minutes were very disappointing. We went back to playing how we did earlier in the season just passing the ball around with no real intensity and too often giving the ball away especially Tosin who struggled to find a Rovers shirt all night. A soft goal to concede a real pet hate of mine is sides not having players on the post I just don't understand it if we have a player on the post he easily clears it. Didn't think that they could have any complaints with their red card although I don't think we could have had any complaints if they had been given 2 at least 1 penalty. As for the Dack red card it's not even a foul let alone a booking but you could see that he couldn't wait to even it up. I thought that the decision to take Rothwell off and bring Bennett on was an odd one as Downing was knackered and didn't have the legs to play on the wing and Bennett was awful at left back. -
Brentford (h) - the Mowbray love in!
Ewood Ace replied to MCMC1875's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
The best we have played this season and with probably our best 11 on the pitch (although you could make an argument for Holtby over Armstrong). At last Mowbray decided to bite the bullet and pick his best right back over his favourite and Nyambe put in a very good performance against a very good player in Benrahma. Downing was his steady self at full back, a danger going forward and solid in defence although he wasn't over worked in that regard. Evans back in the side and the work he did when Brentford were in possession was excellent but his use of the ball when he had was terrible. Rothwell fantastic, without a doubt the most exciting player at the club it really is criminal how under used he has been since he was signed. Also what a difference Graham makes to our team, still by a mile our best striker. Let's hope Mowbray goes with the same again on Saturday and that this could finally be the time where he realises his best 11. -
Our squad is massively overrated by many, talk of a play off challenge was always sheer lunacy from the manager. Bottom half in the Championship is for me reflective of this squad's abilities and I am afraid that is a damning indictment of Mowbray dealings in the transfer market. Walton- Tony really out did himself with this one by somehow finding a keeper worse than Raya. Nyambe- Now that Cunningham is out he is the only decent full back at the club but his confidence has taken a massive hit over the last year after some shameful treatment from the manager. Bennett- Whatever position he plays he is hopeless. Headless chicken. Lenihan- Rash and overrated by the manager who puts far too much faith in him. Tosin- Not at all convinced by him but it's not easy for a young lad like him to come into a shambles of a defence and be expected to make the big difference. I think he would look a better player with a more experienced and calm partner alongside him. Williams- That we ended the summer window with him being first choice centre back after the manager's defenders are coming speech just epitomised how poor the window was. He is simply not strong enough to be a centre back. Bell- Has been here for 2 years and I can't think of one game where he has stood out, his defending is shocking. Playing at least a level to high. Evans- He is what he is will put in some decent performances when he needs a new contract but for the next few years after that you won't get much from him. Travis- By far our best midfielder and has a lot of potential but he would certainly benefit from a manager who has more faith in him. Johnson- Was a good player at this level but looks over he hill now. He's only 32 but on the pitch looks more like a 36 year old. Holtby- Still too early to tell but showed some class against Huddersfield but no doubt Mowbray will try to get him to cut that out of his game. Buckley- Again too early to tell but certainly needs to bulk up a bit. Downing- Steady but unspectacular which probably makes him the best of the summer signings. Rothwell- Underused by the manager who seems to have little confidence it him, but for me we are a better team with him playing. Armstrong- Overused by the manager and for me playing a level to high. 15 goals in 115 Championship game says it all. Brereton & Gallagher- Two expensive but very poor signings who are not good enough for this level. Gallagher is a shadow of the player he was last time and as for Brereton I still just don't understand the signing. Dack- Our stand out player, take him out of our team and we go from a bottom half team to genuine relegation candidates. Graham- Why is he not being used more? Had fantastic season last season and has a great partnership with Dack yet he has for some reason been cast aside for Gallagher who isn't in the same class as him. We are a better team with him in it.

Leeds (A) - Same as last year lads... kind of.
Ewood Ace replied to a topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
A terrible result, we'd have been better off getting thumped as then it may have for the hand of the powers that be. Losing by the odd goal Mowbray will spin it as a good battling away performance against a top side where we just came up short and his backers will simply lap it up. -
The question is what was he signed for? He has been fit for the majority of his time here yet has barley ever even made the first team squad, its not like Mowbray didn't know what he was getting with Chapman. Sadly at the moment he has to go down on the ever growing long list of poor signings made by Mowbray.
-
That's what he has said but if he is so worried about reciprocal pricing then why are we going to be charging West Brom fans £28 when they only charged us £20 with no Waggott tax on the day. On Saturday Preston charged us £24 with no Waggott tax on the day yet they will be charged £28 when they come to Ewood. This is just Waggott trying to make a bit of money out of two well supported clubs in Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds fans after missing his season ticket target, again.
-
My conclusion would be that Brentford have a much better defence than us due to the fact that they went out and got a big dominant centre half, in Jansson. With Raya last season it was one calamity after another in terms of points he cost us double figures easily.
-
You could combine Raya and Walton and would still end up with a keeper who costs you double figures in terms of points for the season, both are poor keepers.
-
Nothing get's past our Tony.
-
I first called for Mowbray to go after the Leeds away game last season as I felt that the same old failings were stopping us from progressing and that he wasn't capable of addressing them. Now 10 months on those same old failings are still happening despite him having had 2 transfer windows to address them but now they are seeing us go backwards and if something doesn't happen soon then we will find ourselves in a relegation battle.
-
Who do we have though?
-
Walton Nyambe Tosin Williams Downing Travis Rothwell Holtby Dack Chapman Graham
-
He's out of contract the end of next season so he will probably put in a handful of good performances at the end of this season and the beginning of next. Because let's be honest he is now incredibly in his seventh season at the club and he has only ever put a run of good performances together when he needs a new contract.
-
One of the worst defenders I have ever seen. He always stands of his opponent and just let's him get a cross into the box unchallenged, it's not good enough from a full back in any team at any level but even worse in our team as our centre backs appear not to be able to challenge for the ball in the air. Plus his whole demeanour on the pitch is terrible he wanders about like he is out for an afternoon stroll and doing the team a favour by being there.
