Mowbray on ins and outs

Sounds like:

  1. Mowbray really isn't bothered about Feeney - an unwanted man at the club. If Feeney doesn't go back to Cardiff on loan, he'll end up somewhere else in some capacity - anywhere other than here.
  2. Downing signing to made permanent in this window.
  3. Bell deal is going to happen (Mowbray says he wants competition for Williams' position).

On the face of it, I'm surprised that we're looking at the left-back position, because I think Williams had done well there this season, but perhaps it's not the left-back position at all, but the left wing-back position. Maybe Bell is a better fit for that position than Williams. But then what about the right side?

If there's one issue with our system under Mowbray's 4-4-2 this season, it's that we struggle to break down defensive teams. Maybe Mowbray thinks that the only way to do this is with a 3-5-2, with extra bodies going forward in unconventional positions to open up their defence more.

Williams has done well in the last few weeks - since the Bell rumours started - strange that....

Before that he was a major weak link in the side. I'm glad this has been identified.

Yep, OJ. I'm surprised to hear the praise for Williams. He's been a shoddy player for the majority of the season. He's found wanting defensively time and time again.

He hasn't said we will be only making two signings though? He said we have bids in for two players. That doesn't mean it will be the end of our business.

He has spoke openly that we are in need of a Chapman type so I will be very surprised if we don't see that type of player arrive either on loan or permanent.

Yes you’re right. Long way to go in the window yet. I was hoping we’d get someone in before Shrewsbury game I guess.

In regards to wing backs I suppose only Tony knows if he’ll go back to the system if he gets the lads he desires, I think we’re al in agreement we don’t currently have the lads for that system.

I’d say Tony won’t strengthen in centre mid as he feels Whittingham is our creative player, I think he’s alluded to us playing deeper as we aren’t very mobile at the back but when Lenihan comes back we’ll push further on and hopefully see the best of Whittingham. I thought he looked good second half of Scunthorpe game personally, got the ball moving quickly. He might have shat out of a few challenges and headders but that isn’t his game is it.

I’m happy to see some competition for Williams who’s doing okay for us this season. Couldn’t tell you what Bell is like but cometition for places is healthy. We’re weak at right back I think we need someone better to be our first choice.

We’ve got Conway who’s leg seem to have gone although he tries his heart out, Antonsson who has provided goals and the odd decent bit of link up play but ultimately isn’t a winger and Bennett who again works his socks off but hasn’t been particularly good this season. None of these have pace, we need pace and quality in the wide positions. Chapman won’t be playing any time soon.

I’d like to see another striker at the club but don’t see it happening. Not convinced by Samuel or Nuttall (yet) and Graham has been in some shocking performances this season be that due to carrying an injury or not being arsed I guess we’ll never know.

We might sign another 10 type player like Dack as competition/back up but winger and full backs have to be priority for me.

Downing is already ours until the end of the season. Signing on a perm will not change the squad + or -

As we are inconsistent (compared to the 2 teams above us) then not sure what your point is.

I mean mentioned by the club or credible sources.

Gallagher won't be one. Forum chit chat.

Bell is surely only cover for left back ?

Chapman won't play for us again imo. What about replacing him ? but not with Feeney.

I suppose Lenihan's return will be viewed as a new signing. As long as we don't sell him.

I've thought that about Chapman since he got the injury. Boro won't want him rushed back to ruin what might be one of their future stars just to suit Rovers.   If we're lucky he might get a game or two at the end of April. We can't wait that long. I think Mowbray knows that though.

IF we don't sign an out and out winger this transfer window then it's blatantly obvious the plans Mowbray has going forward. You simply cannot expect to compete at a higher level with the severe lack of depth we have in an area that is fundamental in the system we are currently using.

I firmly believe 5 at the back would be the system we'd be using now if we had the players to do so. He prefers that, clearly. Even these links with deeper lying playmakers (or, cringe, "quarterbacks" as they are being called) all point towards that style of play.

Never contribute to these forums but been following for some time so made an account! Anyway just seen that Adam Armstrong has been recalled by Newcastle from Bolton.

Would anyone take him as a bit of pace up front? (Too similar to Samuel for me) and were Mowbray and Waggott at Coventry with him when he had that outstanding season?

Why would the club announce anything before officially signing a player? To keep morons on a message board happy?

I asked you who would you like us to sign, but you completely ignored the question.

Fleetwood are signing of Wales international defender Gethin Jones from Everton. So when that done surely we get Bell done and dusted

Jones is a RB, Bell is a LB...

Journo saying Armstrong is likely on his way to us for the rest of the season. Please tell me he is quick, someone?

He's better than any of our other strikers - in my opinion of course.  So yes please.

Armstrong knows this league and scored goals for Mowbray at Coventry before.

Maybe replacement for Antonsson who is seeing a specialist for his injury.

Not seen a pacey winger linked so far.

Hardly a replacement for Antonnsson. He is only out for 2-3 weeks :D

Good signing if true.

Queue fans complaining we have too many strikers...

I honestly think if we signed Ronaldo some fans would complain that he is too old :D

All about having the right wing backs to play those roles

Any talk of strengthening the squad with quality players to get us into the top 2 and through the second half of the season ?

I haven't seen any as yet.

We are 3rd, dropping points and losing ground.

What has Feeney or Downing got to do with improving the consistency of the results in the second half of the season ?

Clearly Mowbray is looking to strengthen the team..

No bother about being linked to players. As long as we signed the players we need.

Downing has lost any game he been involved in here. Consist in my opinion

Armstrong on the face of it would be an excellent back up to Graham.

Bell on the face of it would be a good alternative to Williams.

However, neither of these solve our main problem, our lack of pacy genuine wingers. We need one or two of these, preferably two before anyone else.

That said, all rumour.
