It's hard to compare era to era, due to the quality of the opposition. Better coaching, diets, lack of smoking & drinking, etc. Either way, we certainly haven't seen anyone close to Shearer's levels in my lifetime, in that position. A one-off and we were lucky to have seen the best of him at Ewood. Quote

Bob Crompton probably ticks most boxes but as he is, even to our oldest forumites, a name in the record books he doesn't get that emotional pull. Ronnie and Dougie will be the ones for those watching from the 60's I guess Garner for my era as a hero - but not the greatest player tbh. That has to be Shearer. I feel for those who have only been watching since 2010. There might have been a 'cult' hero - Dack for example - but with the constant circus that is now our club - the likelihood of another club legend coming along seems very remote. Sad times indeed I think it depends on your definition of ‘best’ footballer. Of those I’ve seen live: Most effective? Shearer. Talent on the ball? Tugay. My dad says ‘Douglas wipes the floor with both’. Edited 3 hours ago by Mike E Quote

Prime Shearer would possibly have scored in every game if he was in the City team of a season or two back. Haaland doesn't score the goals Shearer did outside the box for us back in the 90's the best Rovers team in my lifetime would be Friedel Berg Hendry Nelsen Le Saux Ripley Sherwood Tugay Duff Shearer Jansen 1 Quote

I might change my mind now you’ve said that but Fred was another really top player. More skilful than Shearer but not as tough and hard to play against. 1 Quote

I’m going to go a different way and give my favourite X1 (not best, just my favourites): Friedel Emerton Samba Amoruso Warnock Thompson Tugay Flitcroft Duff McCarthy Jansen Managed by Sparky ofc. More skilful than Shearer but not as tough and hard to play against. Bellamy was fantastic for me. Had that x factor and a huge will to win. Always demanding more from his teammates. Fred before my time but my grandad used to say how he was second to only Shearer in his lifetime up top. Passed away before seeing Bellamy unfortunately as he would have been right up his street. 29 minutes ago, Dreyski said: I know it’s all opinions, but Henchoz over Nelsen/Samba is quite some take. Henchoz was superb in that first season under Hodgson. A good defender who could play too. Nelsen would get the nod for me though. 2 Quote
