I scored with a couple of thunderbolts in my playing career but I never managed to dribble around half the opposing team like Bryan Douglas could.

It's hard to compare era to era, due to the quality of the opposition.

Better coaching, diets, lack of smoking & drinking, etc.

Either way, we certainly haven't seen anyone close to Shearer's levels in my lifetime, in that position.
A one-off and we were lucky to have seen the best of him at Ewood.

Impossible task to say who greatest Rover was. Depends on what criteria.

Bob Crompton probably ticks most boxes but as he is, even to our oldest forumites, a name in the record books he doesn't get that emotional pull.

Ronnie and Dougie will be the ones for those watching from the 60's I guess

Garner for my era as a hero - but not the greatest player tbh. That has to be Shearer.

I feel for those who have only been watching since 2010. There might have been a 'cult' hero - Dack for example - but with the constant circus that is now our club - the likelihood of another club legend coming along seems very remote.

Sad times indeed

I think it depends on your definition of ‘best’ footballer. Of those I’ve seen live:

Most effective? Shearer.

Talent on the ball? Tugay.

My dad says ‘Douglas wipes the floor with both’.

I suppose Haaland is the nearest at the moment. Not in Shearer’s league though. Prime Shearer would possibly have scored in every game if he was in the City team of a season or two back.

Haaland doesn't score the goals Shearer did outside the box for us back in the 90's

the best Rovers team in my lifetime would be

                  Friedel

Berg  Hendry  Nelsen  Le Saux

Ripley Sherwood Tugay Duff

           Shearer Jansen

Really hard one to call. I might change my mind now you’ve said that but Fred was another really top player. More skilful than Shearer but not as tough and hard to play against.

Completely agree with that team.

I’m going to go a different way and give my favourite X1 (not best, just my favourites):

                      Friedel

Emerton Samba Amoruso Warnock

Thompson  Tugay  Flitcroft  Duff

              McCarthy  Jansen

Managed by Sparky ofc.

When it comes to beating players nobody comes near Dougie.

I know it’s all opinions, but Henchoz over Nelsen/Samba is quite some take.

Bellamy was fantastic for me. Had that x factor and a huge will to win. Always demanding more from his teammates.

Fred before my time but my grandad used to say how he was second to only Shearer in his lifetime up top. Passed away before seeing Bellamy unfortunately as he would have been right up his street.

Henchoz was superb in that first season under Hodgson. A good defender who could play too.

Nelsen would get the nod for me though.

Like I said, my favourites, not the best. I toyed with putting Dack behind Jansen.

For the best I’ve seen, I agree with Chaddy’s team.

Henchoz was the one really good signing RoyBoy made amongst a lot of very average players.

Didn't start watching football till the early 90s

Which is a good 30-35 years and covers all recent history (good and bad).

I think it's a pretty good span, to be fair.

My team would be mostly similar, but with Nelsen in for Henchoz, Berg in for Neill and probably Ripley replacing Dunn.

I’m 35, and had a season ticket from the 97-98 season, so I mostly missed the real glory days, although I did go to the odd game with my dad or cousin before then.

A player that I haven’t seen mentioned yet who I thought was one of the best of the last 20/25 years would be Bentley. Incredible talent who should have gone on to have a far better career than he did. A bit like Beckham, played wide right but didn’t have pace, just had the ability to find half a yard and put in fantastic crosses. Also weighed in with some brilliant goals. Him and Emerton made a great partnership down the right side.

Bellamy also goes down as one of the best  in my time. Only stayed one season and I seem to think he did have injury issues, but he frightened the life out of defenders with his pace, worked incredibly hard for the team and scored some worldies (Boro (H), Pompey (A). Liverpool got him for an absolute steal at the time, I was devastated!

In my watching years and trying for a balanced team:

           Friedel

Berg   Hendry  Nelsen  Le Saux

Ripley   Dunn   Flitcroft   Duff

          Shearer Bellamy

Bit worried about the defensive abilities on the left flank - that's one of the reasons Flitty is in there. Almost went for Batty as he was brilliant at covering Le Saux - at least until they started fighting each other 😉

Feel a bit guilty about no pre-92 (other than Big Col) in there.

Just think nowadays Duff would probably play on the right!!

Maybe another theme is best pre-Walkers team and best post-Walkers team.

Although the second of those might makes some of us almost suicidal!!

Suppose Sherwood is seen as an automatic pick by a lot with being the captain of the title winning side.

For me though I always thought Batty was twice the player Sherwood was, such a shame he got that injury fairly early doors with us.

100%.

Unbelievable in 93-94.
