Gotta admit, you've completely lost me there

John Beck - former Cambridge manager.Β

Famous and briefly extremely successful but relatively short lived long ball merchant.

Players were brick out houses who'd run all day.

One of the tactics was to welly the ball forward as quickly as possible towards the opposition corner flags and chase after it.

He was never prolific though - his best spell was with Rovers where I think he had a dozen goals in 30+ games.Β  Think he spent over 10 years at Grimsby where he was a 1 in 5 or 6 man.Β  Β

Thought Mimms, Livingstone and Dobson were all fairly decent at the time.

Without Jack's intervention and the impetus provided by their arrival I've little doubt we'd have gone down without a whimper that season.

Starting to be really irritated by derby. They've got our best fullback from last season and our best centreback.Β  Eustace is really fucking us over

How is that Eustace 'fucking us over'?

Baath - we didn't offer him a worthwhile deal (as farΒ  as we know), and Derby did.

Beck - not our player. Presumably Liverpool happy with how Eustace used and developed him so makes sense for them to continue that. Whereas they don't know VI and he has form for playing back 3 - even though seems to be playing with back 4 for now.

Liverpool mainly play trad back 4, as does Eustace, so again makes sense for them to send Beck somewhere that means he can slot into Liverpool's team if for some reason they need him.

I get the frustration that Derby are taking 'our' players but Eustace is merely taking advantage of the situation in the same way anyone else would.

Kendall did more damage to us when he went to Everton IIRC.

Beck nearly got Cambridge into the first ever Premier League, although if you’re going to be a long ball side, do it with Steve Claridge and Dion Dublin up front.

Leicester beat Beck’s Cambridge in the β€˜other’ play off semi final in 1992. Otherwise that could have been an even more uncomfortable afternoon at Wembley under an arial barrage.

John Beck was Allardye & Pullis way before they were.

Kick and rush specialist.

Out Wimbledon'd Wimbledon in the wind up the opposition stakes.

I seem to remember things like the away dressing room only having cold showers.

Much as I rate Beck as a left back the lad Liverpool signed from Bournemouth is a better prospect. He’s got what Beck has got but more of it.

Any predictions or ITK on where Buckley and Pears are off to, and what kind of price?

Personally, anything above L1 and Β£750,000 each would be a success for all involved. Add ons wouldn't be a terrible idea due to nationality, "potential" and age. If JRC could go for Β£1m it might not be as crazy to hope for similar.

Β

I'll make a guess based on a few patterns from over the years. Buckley to Blackpool. Probably for around Β£600k with add ons taking it nearer to Β£1m. I can see him being linked with Luton too. Pears to Birmingham for Β£1.5m.

Travis to Coventry or Birmingham, is another prediction I'll make. I could end up being way off, of course, but let's see.

Maybe not fucking us over but taking advantage of his time here

Not the debate the fact he’s labelled a massive loss I disagree

when beck started last year we won 8 and lost 8Β

when beck was out of the team we won 8 lost 8

beck is better and likely to have a better career but we have enough to cover the void as shown aboveΒ

It's almost as if there are 10 other players in a team, who vary in their availability and form, and different sets of opponents.

By this sort of logic, Gally was a good player for us. Stats like this got used to show his alleged value to the team before. I like stats but they don't paint the whole picture.

Why wouldn't he though?

He had a core that helped him be in the top 6 for the majority of his time here last season, managers tend to use trusted players where possible.

Just seen a loose link to Deli Alli, we like broken former stars here. Who was the skinny big CB/CM we had from a while, former city. Name escapes me.

Good player? Not really can be called effective, same way the argument is used for Gueye and Ohashi regarding starts etc your right stats don’t paint the whole picture but as shown over 35 odd games with him in and out of the team the teams results don’t vary too muchΒ

ps for what it’s worth to anybody he’s injured againΒ

I did this on FM23, worked fine. Didn't work out as well when he triggered a 2yr extension on promotion (πŸ˜‚) and a hefty pay rise... 1st world problems and all that.

Those punts look very reasonable, given the wrecking squad that is installed in the back rooms at the moment. I just think it is totally disingenuous of those morons to wait till late in the window to do the outgoing business, as it will inevitably leave us and VI short of numbers, spirit, experience and cover.Β

Wankers!

VENKY WANKERS OUT!

Why on earth would we be in for Dele Alli? Fabregas gave him a lifeline and he's obviously fucked it up. He needs to just retire.

The outgoing business isn't in our control. Unless you get a bid you're willing to accept, what else are you supposed to do? Tout the player around and you invariably reduce the bids as they know you want to get rid. Buying teams also know you've more chance of a lower bid being accepted later on if the team wants or needs to get rid.Β

Not sure they would. They couldn’t down at their place.

We did the Ewood game 2-1 after they had gone down to 10 men in the first half.

Cambridge weren't pretty but feck me, what Beck achieved with them on a shoe string budget was quite remarkable - making the most of what you have!Β

They didn't away at Cambridge that season. I was at that game and we really struggled- although we missed a chance late on to get a draw IIRC.

After Cambridge lost 5-0 to Leicester, Beck said Rovers didn't have a cat in hell's chance of winning the final.

Got that one wrong, didn't he.
