Eric Dier, born in Cheltenham and an England international. Came through the Sporting Lisbon academy so was never classed as ‘home grown’ when playing in England 🙃 For squad registration rules, sure, but he wouldn't have had any work permit issues. 1 Quote

Goozburger Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago 1 minute ago, roverandout said: Why couldn't they have backed Eustace or jdt like this when we were on the brink of play offs Based on the age of player Eustace seems to like, I'm quite glad we didn't back him. I liked what Eustace instilled on the team (until the collapse in the last ten games) but I was always worried that he has a penchant for older players. There is no resale value in that, and with the club losing around £15m a season just by standing still, throwing money at older players would have caused huge problems in quick time. 4 Quote

Not financially at least. We're well in the black this summer - wage bill has been slashed and we've sold more than we've bought (assuming no more are brought in). Edited 7 hours ago by Exiled_Rover 1 Quote

Well we've had to sell the core of our team to do it. The turnover has been insane - 9th signing coming in, how many have left? It's a massive, massive gamble. Gestede and Ismael seem comfortable doing it. Perhaps JDT and Broughton weren't? It's different, if nothing else. 2 Quote

All that narrative changes if you are backed and then promoted. 1 Quote

Ferrit Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Gudjohnsen looks interesting, scored goals at international level for Iceland, could be a good signing. Quote
Neal Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Been told from a Preston fan who would know that Browne is on less money at Sunderland than he was at Preston. Surprisingly. 1 Quote
Tomphil2 Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago I'd take a good pay cut to go from Preston to Sunderland to be fair. 6 Quote

On this particular player, I have more concerns than some of the other signings who I have much more reason for optimism over, and even then, I havent written him off and have tried to constructively give reasons why he might prove to be a good signing. What are your concerns about Andri Gudjohnsen? 1 hour ago, RevidgeBlue said: Pears is more than adequate as back up. So why hasn't he been back up keeper so far? Quote

He seems to have really struggled in the Belgian league and scored far fewer than Gueye who hasnt proved to be good enough. His record in general doesnt suggest a goalscorer. It feels like a punt although for the fees we are able to offer, I appreciate that it is particularly difficult to sign a striker compared to other positions as that position is the hardest and dearest to sign. There are things to cling on to. Neither his record for 1 season in Denmark nor his international record are brilliant but they are certainly much healthier. And he is also still quite young so fair to assume hes not at at his peak, and looking at videos, he seems to have attributes we can work with. His finishes arent scruffy (like the video of Gueye's were) and he strikes a ball cleanly, and also physically seems quite strong and he isnt slow. Who is dad is is fairly irrelevant. And to clarify, I am NOT writing him off. I am sure this post will attract people calling me out as negative as you arent allowed to point out concerns. Im just less convinced at this stage than I was when we signed some of the other players that we have. Morishita for example, another I had not seen before, I think theres far more on paper to be excited about.  Quote
