This filling the squad with your own cheap buys and youth is fine if most of them cut the mustard but if they don'y you are stuck with them.

If you get relegated they are then mostly worth less than what minimal fees you are paying for them.

I suspect should that happen the ones who brought them in will be long gone though with a few years wages and commission in their pockets.

I imagine Ismael has been told that league position is irrelevant this season. He seems far too relaxed at the moment for someone as fiery as he is whilst overseeing this shit show.

The goal is to polish some of these turds into profitable assets and reduce the amount Venky’s need to send over when the rest of the transfer sales runs out.

Hasn’t the league position always been irrelevant under these owners? Difference being some managers still railed against that, as well, after all it’s supposed be to competitive first team football with a place in the Premier League at stake, not ‘development football’… however they seem to have a pliant one this time.

Dont forget, league position tends to correlate very significantly with the wage bill.

There is no chance in today's football to get a proven striker for this level for 2 million, they will all be a gamble. Modern football with just one striker has limited the pool significantly as it also puts higher demand of the attributes to fill the role.  

Another aspect is that the extended European competitions has caused an influx of more money to sub-par leagues which has increased the transfer sums and especially for strikers. 

Gudjonsons profile is very similar to Aune Heggebøe, who WBA picked up for 5+ mill this summer. He's a 24 year-old striker with a 1 in 3 goal ratio including spells in the second tier in Norway. 

Judging by the top scorer table in the Championship last season, finding a 20 goal striker looks pretty grim:

- Not a single player scored 20+

- Only 2 strikers hit 15 or more (Piroe and Sargent, both expensive transfers when bought)

On Gudjohnsen, no like you I havent seen him live. I was just passing some comments on the usual information we have, based on his record to date and opinions of the supporters of previous clubs.

I have also never seen Morishita for example. Out of the 2, based solely on the same sort of information, I am much more encouraged and excited by his signing. 

Hopefully they will both prove to be good signings. We need a good striker as Ohashi is ok and Gueye is terrible.

On Michalski, you are just arguing for the sake of it because you share my opinion that we need another senior keeper, which suggests that like me, you also share the opinion that such young untested keepers are not ready to be immediate backup to Toth at Championship level.

Pears - what the hell is going/has gone on there? Is he just gonna disappear for the season while we pay him. Not a sniff of a transfer, hardly surprising, but it’s a bizarre situation. My guess is he was one of the ‘core’ Eustace lads, most of who are now gone.

I would take him. But would have to be low wages or pay as you play.

Ohashi is more than Ok but somehow you don't see that.

yes I would like another keeper in but nowhere have I said Michalski shouldn't be number 2. Its down to performance and training.

He would develop that talent more on a loan into non league or at least regular football for the under 21s.

Not being our sub keeper who doesnt provide suitable cover at this level considering how young and raw he is.

Neither Sheff Utd nor Ipswich will finish below us. Probably Sheff Wed unless new owners before January. Otherwise Charlton, Hull and Oxford are the only teams that are potentially worse. PNE and QPR unlikely.

Well I hope so, given the cards he's been dealt. Avoiding relegation should be the baseline, any thing else is probably a bonus. As somebody rightly pointed out, wage budget usually correlate strongly with league position so that should put us in 18-20th place. 

Add to that the dysfunctional club management with power struggles, lacking contract extensions, owners who don't care. I don't see how many manager can be expected to perform a miracle here?

Ismael was clear before the summer that he wanted to keep the core and add to it. It didn't pan out that way with Dolan, Brittain and Travis. The gradual transition has now been a full blown revamp of the squad. 

I'm an optimist but also a realist based on facts and data. There is no doubt that there is a high risk of this going badly. Statistically not a all transfer work out, even when you are spending a lot more than us. (ref Man United). Our wild card approach will be even riskier as for most of the players, the Championship is a step up.

It's very likely that result wise it will get worse before it gets better. Just hope that the club sticks with Ismael for some time to see through the rebuild.
