Rovers can’t or won’t do that because they won’t pay the wage. Because we won’t pay the wages we have to gamble more. It’s not the road to success in my opinion, unless you either have top class scouts or you get lucky. Dont forget, league position tends to correlate very significantly with the wage bill. My edit button isn't working, but to add to my above post, and as you say, we won't pay the wages, so again the 3 year contract isn't the big gamble part. Quote

So there must be something there, where he has played well to have been selected for his national team. Re Makhtar, some of you are hypocrites to be honest, because when he was scoring for us, he was the man. Now that he isn't playing well, he has to be sold. No, I've never rated him. Much prefer Yuki. I can just about live with him being 3rd choice which he now undoubtedly is after the new signing but I'd be fine if we did get rid. Give him a banjo and a cow and no need to worry about the cow's arse...   Quote

Tomphil2 Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago This filling the squad with your own cheap buys and youth is fine if most of them cut the mustard but if they don'y you are stuck with them. If you get relegated they are then mostly worth less than what minimal fees you are paying for them. I suspect should that happen the ones who brought them in will be long gone though with a few years wages and commission in their pockets. Quote
roverblue Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I imagine Ismael has been told that league position is irrelevant this season. He seems far too relaxed at the moment for someone as fiery as he is whilst overseeing this shit show. The goal is to polish some of these turds into profitable assets and reduce the amount Venky’s need to send over when the rest of the transfer sales runs out. 5 Quote
Mattyblue Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago (edited) Hasn’t the league position always been irrelevant under these owners? Difference being some managers still railed against that, as well, after all it’s supposed be to competitive first team football with a place in the Premier League at stake, not ‘development football’… however they seem to have a pliant one this time. There is no chance in today's football to get a proven striker for this level for 2 million, they will all be a gamble. Modern football with just one striker has limited the pool significantly as it also puts higher demand of the attributes to fill the role.  Another aspect is that the extended European competitions has caused an influx of more money to sub-par leagues which has increased the transfer sums and especially for strikers. Gudjonsons profile is very similar to Aune Heggebøe, who WBA picked up for 5+ mill this summer. He's a 24 year-old striker with a 1 in 3 goal ratio including spells in the second tier in Norway. Judging by the top scorer table in the Championship last season, finding a 20 goal striker looks pretty grim: - Not a single player scored 20+ - Only 2 strikers hit 15 or more (Piroe and Sargent, both expensive transfers when bought)  6 Quote

He seems to have had a really poor season for Gent, their fans dont seem fond of him (contrast that to Legia fans gutted to lose Morishita) and his goal record is unremarkable. His season in Denmark at a lesser level and his international record before that do provide some encouragement and he is young. I fear that this will be our last signing but we certainly need more. Have you ever see him play live? here is his goal for Iceland vs Scotland https://youtu.be/GtuQyVh2b_E?si=Qtq7VT-GN87_kzdI Goal for Gent vs Oud-Heverlee Leuven https://youtu.be/7OUVoYMo4bs?si=j-582icbJUwVKKvT  1 hour ago, roversfan99 said: I am not writing Michalski off. To suggest I am is twisting what I am saying. He shouldnt be expected to be immediate backup at a Championship club at his age and has displayed that he isnt ready for that. You keep saying maybe Ismael is happy with this and that. We dont know but even if he is, any manager isnt beyond question and Ismael certainly isnt. Your are basing your opinion on 1 game, where it was his debut and probably nervous especially after his mistake. Given that he has been called to England under 19's show he has talent, so why shouldn't we develop that. back to the same old crap going on about we don't know if Ismael is happy with Michalski being back up, he has told he is and given that Pears isn't anywhere near the first team anymore is telling. 1 Quote
DutchRover Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago LT saying Cadamarteri deal still possible, that's a deal I would like done, and sell Leonard. Happy to have Cadamarteri go back on loan too if we can bring in a loan forward from the Prem as back-up and shift Gueye. Quote

I was just passing some comments on the usual information we have, based on his record to date and opinions of the supporters of previous clubs. I have also never seen Morishita for example. Out of the 2, based solely on the same sort of information, I am much more encouraged and excited by his signing. Hopefully they will both prove to be good signings. We need a good striker as Ohashi is ok and Gueye is terrible. On Michalski, you are just arguing for the sake of it because you share my opinion that we need another senior keeper, which suggests that like me, you also share the opinion that such young untested keepers are not ready to be immediate backup to Toth at Championship level. Never once said he doesnt have talent. 3 Quote
Trinidad Rover Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago (edited) Would anyone take Dennis on a free? Released by Forest. Obviously utter crap on his loan last year, but arguably a class above anything we have now and has some pedigree. Not sure I would but better than nothing and we probably couldn’t afford him. Intrigued and excited by the Gudjohnson signing. Gamble but hopefully it pays off. Pears - what the hell is going/has gone on there? Is he just gonna disappear for the season while we pay him. Not a sniff of a transfer, hardly surprising, but it’s a bizarre situation. My guess is he was one of the ‘core’ Eustace lads, most of who are now gone. Edited 4 hours ago by Trinidad Rover Quote

Not being our sub keeper who doesnt provide suitable cover at this level considering how young and raw he is. Quote

Well I hope so, given the cards he's been dealt. Avoiding relegation should be the baseline, any thing else is probably a bonus. As somebody rightly pointed out, wage budget usually correlate strongly with league position so that should put us in 18-20th place. Add to that the dysfunctional club management with power struggles, lacking contract extensions, owners who don't care. I don't see how many manager can be expected to perform a miracle here? Ismael was clear before the summer that he wanted to keep the core and add to it. It didn't pan out that way with Dolan, Brittain and Travis. The gradual transition has now been a full blown revamp of the squad. I'm an optimist but also a realist based on facts and data. There is no doubt that there is a high risk of this going badly. Statistically not a all transfer work out, even when you are spending a lot more than us. (ref Man United). Our wild card approach will be even riskier as for most of the players, the Championship is a step up. It's very likely that result wise it will get worse before it gets better. Just hope that the club sticks with Ismael for some time to see through the rebuild.  2 Quote
