Seeing those 3 January signings lollop round the pitch for the last 10/15mins just summed up the failure.

Had a look and the 3 'Championship' teams in the top 6, Coventry, Sunderland & Bristol City - Transfer Markt has them spending 17M, 12M & 10M this season.

It has us spending 5M.

That's the difference. You simply can't compete for the Top 6 in this league without spending some money.

And that won't change,  it will get worse.

A little early to look at signings, but Ryan Hardie’s (who’s free kick beat Liverpool) team relegated, & Emil Riis is out of contract. Could be useful signings, & probably better than some already on our roster.

Taking a very narrow view, but that was the moment for Dennis to shine. The biggest piece of our 'significant' investment in January, perhaps finally a striker with gamebreaking potential (Ohashi and Gueye have certainly been decent bargain buys, but they're both clearly squad-level, rather than leading, strikers), we need one goal to make the playoffs...

And yet clearly off the pace, rusty with the ball, misses an open header ... everything you'd expect of a striker who has played barely 5 minutes since March (with a red card in there to boot!).

When he's fit, I'm sure there's a hell of a player in there, but he's not even close to that right now. A clear panic buy at the end of the window, probably cheap compared to if we actually signed a decent striker for several million in the summer, yet also probably quite expensive for a return of zero goals and one assist in ~170min of action (and a loan too, at least Kargbo could turn into a decent investment).

Plenty proud of some of the efforts to end the year, but this whole season just leaves a bitter taste.

Can't help but think whoever goes up in the playoffs is going to get obliterated in the PL next season. None of them even close to the required standard and would need seriously heavy investment to avoid being totally embarrassed, never mind staying up.

First time two teams in the Championship have reached 100 points. Grim as far as the gap between the leagues is concerned.

100% no to Riis, his overall game is poor, nobbers want rid.

Two unknowns on the cheap.

Your post said we hadn't spent money on a striker for 6 years. We have, last summer. Maybe you meant to say 'proper money'?

Wasn't even that header that annoyed me, I understand how they can be difficult to direct and not every player has the technique. On the other hand, the ball to the back stick where he touched it to their keeper... Either try to be van basten and shoot or smash it across goal to create chaos/a chance. Don't do fuck all with it.

I wonder what the record is for cumulative seasons in the Championship without getting into the top six for the past 20 years or so? We're on, what, 12 seasons or something now?

Very costly if you figure in what not being able to direct that header today in the far post cost us.  That one moment alone could have paid for itself 10x over

Kargbo was an absolute idiot when he came on. It was clear as day they were going down easily and the ref was awarding soft free kicks. He just made it easy for them giving away soft foul after soft foul. Probably ate up a good 5 minutes of play.

Thought we played OK.  Pears, whose gaffs have cost us playoffs is unlikely to play for us again.  Toth has looked so much better now.he has a few games under his belt. I think we lose that about 3 or 4  one with Pears playing today.

I thought we gave it "a reet good go".  I am a lot lot less worried about next season.  Some of our footy today was quite good, pleasing on the eye.  I thought Toth was a bit unfortunate.with the goal, was there really no foul or offside in that melee.  Ref was good 1st half, minus penalty.shouts.  Seems like someone had a word cos he was a bit of a homer 2nd half.  Did he not understand obstruction 2 clear fouls he let go.  Anyway wasnt to be but proud of the lads today and I would not have put Dennis on, he don't give a shit and it is clear to see that missed cross to him was poor, just neither shot or crossed just let the ball bounce of his studs to nowhere. So eone with his quality should be doing better but when you do not care these things will bappen. I thought Ref missed about a minute and a half added on. Injury time was delayed about 2 mins with their injury, then time wasting but as per usual man in black does us no favours.  COYB.

My prediction for next season, Too six till January looking good.  No reinforcements in January, Death spiral with a resurgence in form about season ticket time.  So just like the last 4 out of 5 seasons.  The Venky Blueprint.

i said when we were relegated we`ll never get back to the premier league in my lifetime, that was 13 years ago and venkys are doing a good job of making that come true

well well, The emotions of following Blackburn Rovers. The high thinking of playoff place when Ohashi and then the lows when they scored an equaliser. Then hoping/shouting at the tele that we need a goal to clinch a playoff place after that.

This season people thought we were relegation candidates but we have proved that wrong massively and done very well this season. Finish 7th leaves me mixed emotions, one that we have done so well this season but gutted to just missed out on playoffs again

Time to regroup this summer, enjoy the summer and the hot weather (hopefully), we make the signings Ismael wants and hopefully we can challenge for the playoffs next season.

Also the fans at Brammall Lane were fantastic.

Good shouts, but I'd save your breath, noses were being turned up at O'brien, Mcburnie and Brereton a bit back.

Yes, agreed that criticising that specific header is a bit harsh! He did make a good run in that instance... Your example is better 🙂

While we can debate Dennis' efforts/decision-making that game, I can't really direct that much venom toward a clearly out of form striker, who, due to our 'unique' circumstances, was supposed to be the guy, yet clearly was in no position to be that this year.

Yup. Meant to cap my post that the Dennis loan is ultimately emblematic of our 'penny wise, pound foolish' approach, imposed because Venky's have apparently suddenly decided they can't be bothered with losing £10m+/year anymore (heck, even making a loss at all given we made a £3m profit last year...).

Yes, Championship football is an insane money-waster, but if you've seemingly suddenly become aware of that (perhaps partly hastened by an Indian court...), then why are you still owning the club.

I can catch those balls and flick them back between my legs I've no idea what he's trying to do that close to the touchline
