Premier League clubs spent just £96.2m on new signings during the January 2024 window - the lowest winter spending in three years, with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) slashing clubs' spending power. In the summer practically every club bought at least 2 players for over £10mill. Some were buying multiple players over £20million. Premier League clubs splashed £2.08bn on new signings during the summer window - not quite hitting the record-breaking £2.44bn spent last year. £96.2mill in Jan. £2.08bn in summer. Still think we wouldn’t have got much more?

As I said above, it’s because they fire-sold him at a relatively short notice in January. At that moment in time only Palace were looking, so we had no negotiating power and had to sell him. As much as Prem clubs can throw money around, most won’t throw £30mill around unplanned, and some would already have spent. Plus look at the trouble the likes of Newcastle and Villa are having with PSR. Everyone knew you would have more interest, more bidders and thus a higher fee in July.
