Thank you Tony and good luck.

Arnie for the Whitehouse; USA to teach the rest

of the world about democracy.

LOL!

The fattest and stupidest nation on earth.

Fattest yes, but by all accounts (and the fans I see in the crowds) the English are trying their best to catch up. Embracing so many things that are American why do you do that if you hate them so much. Stupidest? ( a good old Americanism that, most stupid I think is the correct English term) hardly, you show your own ignorance by that comment.

Why do the English crave things American so much. When I left I had never heard of McDonalds or seen a Baseball cap but in the pictures, only a few years later I returned to find a proliferation of American fast food chains all over and it seems you are all doing a great job of making them a great success. Hell there's even one by Ewood.

What can I teach anyone about democracy? just be thankful you have it and the right to openly voice your opinion, as offensive as I find it you have a right to express it. Please tell me your experiences in America that have led you to the misconception that Americans are the "stupidest" people.

I would be interested to hear your life experiences of living amongst Americans that led you to arrive at that decision. If you don't wish to bore others with them that's OK just PM me.

perleeeese

Geee . That's confirmed it - you have turned native .....Already..... cool.gif

Actually BP I beleive the Natives have many languages and dialects, non of which include that word. It came after the English and assorted other Europeans destroyed the natural order of things over here. But that is another story, one we English don't care to take much credit for either.

Letting people go that have been your friends and colleagues for years is truly gut wrenching, espescially when you know AHEAD OF TIME. You have to keep working with these people and look them in the eye on Monday knowing that come Friday you will be meeting with them to tell them they no longer have an income.

Do you really screw your "friends and colleagues" like that?

If so, then with friends like you I suppose they don't need enemies.

In the words of Jim Royle "Gut wrenching" my arse.""

Colin, GROW UP. When you do, would you like to come work for me heh heh.

What would you do Colin, the financial situation demand you have a RIF of 25%. Tell me how would you handle it. Do us all a favour, don't try to tell me what my feelings were you have absolutely no idea, none.

Given what you say about capitalism I can only assume you support the opposite, so what do you stand for, communism, socialism, people not working hard, expecting the ones that do to bail them out? really acceptable those options. What is so wrong with taking care of a business, sometimes a few must suffer so the whole can survive, it's not just capitalism Al it's also the way of Mother Nature, think about it. Only the strong survive.

Um, fair enough you have to run a business and all that but there is a balance.

It is, after all, compassion which makes us human.

You make a well functioning society sound like a pack of wolves, culling the weak......

RIF? What the hell's that?

America is the land of the free ... market. Everything is dictated by that. Reminiscent of Norman Tebbit's "get on yer bike" speech, methinks.

Funnily enough I work for an American firm, and they announced last year that they were making people redundant after merging with another firm ... but didn't say who was leaving for weeks and weeks. Did wonders for morale!

I'm still here luckily, but it's still a blot on the horizon, you never know when they might pull the same stunt.

Think the answer is to keep your CV looking good. If the boss knows he's going to sack you two weeks in advance of telling you then he's not teh sort of boss I want to work for. It's a two fingers job, and go and find a decent employer. Probably outside of the US! laugh.gif

"grow up", "get with the program", "smell the coff-eee", "coming down the pipe", "having 'issues'", urgh, I want to sit down and try to forget about all that jazz!

I would say a pack of Wolves is as good an example of a well funtioning society as you will get, or was. Until the maruading Europeans almost wiped them off the face of the planet.

Bryan, RIF is Reduction In Force, sorry.

When I worked in England I worked for an English company. When I started there was 2500 employees when I left 6 years later there was 800. The same tactics in getting to 800 were used as is here and yes it took some time for the individuals to find out. Of course compassion is important, infact it is my belief that compassion comes first it is a Human trait, an instinct if you will it's just that sometime one must learn to overcome that. Yes it's difficult.

Now as Colin said, back on topic.

There is a big apology in today's LET-Williams says Hughes should have told TP first thing on Friday morning,in retrospect they should have acted 24 hours earlier, they are deeply regretful of any embarrassment caused to TP and his family and they have already launched an investigation into how the news leaked out.

USA,

Apologies if I seemed a bit grumpy. I didn't mean to offend.

It was probably a business/cultural shock. If that's the way you do things in the USA then so be it. I just think it's a bit rough on the poor sod who is marched out of the office on a Friday and has to hit the street, just because the bottom line doesn't add up.

No problem Colin, one of the points I was trying to make is it is not unique to the USA. Course it's rotten, no one likes it.

It happened to my wife just 4 months ago. Her seniors were aware she and 4 others would be told to leave 5 weeks in advance.

I`m suprised you find it such a shock Colin.

Luckily all is well and she found a better job but I bet it happens in an office ever week up and down our wee island.

I hate this dead man walking syndrome. It causes untold stress to everyone involved when a decision to make staff redundant or simply fire them has been taken and it has not been enacted.

If redundancies are needed, then usually the situation has been brewing for some time. A good senior manager will have already thought through the operational consequencies and morale issues before the meeting is held to decide who exactly will be going. In those circumstances, holding the meeting off site on a Wednesday, taking hand written notes, allowing time for reflection Thursday morning and then holding the meetings with each individual affected on the Thursday afternoon is the best way. If several people are going, the Thursday morning can be used to make sure you know where they are and can check on any atenuating circumstances. Then quietly round them up and have enough relevant people to speak with them individually.

In Europe (including the UK) you have to tell redundant staff their position is at risk and give them the chance to suggest alternative ways to work for the company. However, I always insist they take immediate paid leave of absence and ask them to see me again early the following week, again individually. Most accept and understand there is no way back, some come up with daft ideas and sometimes a genuinely good and original suggestion emerges.

After making sure the departing people are safely off the company premises and any emotional cases are being taken care of, immediately call a staff meeting and tell the ones who remain the truth, irrespective of whether you cannot assure them their jobs are safe or you are able to make an assurance of no more redundancies for six months or longer.

I've faced some pretty horrible situations but nothing like the Parkes leak.

I have just read with utter dismay some of the appalling comments by so -called Rovers fans in the LET 'Tony parkes letters special' tonight and feel compelled to comment.

'I am disgusted with the sacking of Tony Parkes. As a fan of 26 years I hope

many will join me in my decision never to attend another game.

I have donated all my merchandise to charity'

So writes Elaine who proudly boasts ' ex Blackburn rovers fan.' rolleyes.gif

'If anyone needs to go its Mark Hughes- he's only been here two minutes and he's been upsetting everyone'

Words of wisdom from Joan.

'I'm sorry to say but with this sort of appalling management, they deserve to go down'

Extremely unhappy fan Richard.

'I supported Mark Hughes as manager and know he's inherited a lot of problems but, he's certainly gone dowm in my estimation'

It just seems to be another symptom of ''too old'' when you get in your 50's

Oh please P. Connell from Darwen give us a break!!! laugh.gif

What comes into the minds of people to write such utter rubbish?.

Overdosed on sentimentality can these fans' not see beyond their noses.

Hughes made a management decision....like it or not he is the boss and wants to bring his own man in.TP has been well paid and looked after by Rovers for 34 years and will no doubt recieve WELL OVER 100K from his testimonial.Cut the tears and cut the bullshyte.

I hope you keep to your word Elaine....ever heard of the saying cut your nose off to spite your face luv? blink.gif

Sentimental or not SG194 , they are Rovers fans and they are entitled to withdraw their custom anytime they want . We aren't in the position of many clubs who can run roughshod over their fans in the knowledge that there are others who will replace them . That's why the decision to axe Parkes isn't just heartless , it's bloody stupid as well . Money isn't the issue ; it's the way a long standing employee has been treated by lesser men.

For the first time ever I fully agree with a Guardian column . I'll be agreeing with Colin next......
