nicko Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Well I know why the Guardian Online are pushing Hughes so much, head of GU sport a Mr Sean Ingle put some money on Hughes when he was 29/1. A say this slightly tounge in cheek as Im sure they're slightly more professional than that. eh Nicko? Interesting and slightly scary. If you think the Newcastle betting is odd you should check out the Republic of Ireland job.

jim mk2 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 ? It's the Lucas Neill situation all over again - person doesn't want to be here, so we bend over backwards (in his case with the captaincy) in an attempt to persuade him to stay. Has nobody got any pride??? Good point ; if Hughes tells the board he wants to go I wouldn't beg him to stay. After 3 years at the helm (longer than most managers) it could well be that this is a good time to split for both Hughes and Rovers.
EwoodGlory Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Well I know why the Guardian Online are pushing Hughes so much, head of GU sport a Mr Sean Ingle put some money on Hughes when he was 29/1.Wonder where he got 29/1 at? I got 25/1 when the market first went up, that was the highest I could find. Still hope he stays, but put the bet on as I feared the worst would happen. If it does i'll just have to drown my sorrows for a week on my winnings. I'll sue.
nicko Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 From the look on Shearers face I would say there is a lot more going on than ANYONE knows in respect of his position as potential manager. As for him not talking to KK for a long time, that is also utter rubbish. KK and AS BOTH played golf together at SHAW HILL at a charity event in September to raise money for a cricketer. The more I see it the less I think HUGHES is a major target, allegedly Mort has been talking to high profile people yet we still have a total denial of contact at BRFC. Who do we believe ? Nobody. But that is cracking info about the golf... Did they talk to each other? Interrupt their backswings? I do know that Shearer isn't having Keegan as his dream ticket partner. I think he would work with a Houllier-type though. He is a crafty old fox, go in as the 'manager in waiting' and it's a win-win. You play badly then it's your turn, you do well and it's because you are there.
Fife Rover Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 How about not being so bloody desperate. If Hughes wants to leave, do we really want to be cast as the desperate girlfriend begging him to stay? It's the Lucas Neill situation all over again - person doesn't want to be here, so we bend over backwards (in his case with the captaincy) in an attempt to persuade him to stay. Has nobody got any pride??? OOOHHH! Forgotten our sense of humour haven't we T4E? Did you not notice the smilie at the end?
EwoodGlory Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 He is a crafty old fox, go in as the 'manager in waiting' and it's a win-win. I have alway thought that, my initial reaction to the 'i would take it, if formally approached' statement, was that he purposely forced Redknapps hand into staying at Pompey. As i've mentioned before my ambition one day is to go into football journalism and i'm going to practice writing articles. My crazy conclusions ended up in this, which I wrote on Saturday morning when the Redknapp story broke. Shearer plots management path It's the first i've wrote so rough around the edges but you get my drift
LeftWinger Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Wonder where he got 29/1 at? I got 25/1 when the market first went up, that was the highest I could find. The highest traded on betfair was 47-1
Ronin Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Nobody. But that is cracking info about the golf... Did they talk to each other? Interrupt their backswings? Eddie Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Well done Nicko, looks like you have top information yet again.
T4E Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 OOOHHH! Forgotten our sense of humour haven't we T4E? Did you not notice the smilie at the end? Come on now Fife. I'm more than capable of realising that your suggestion was tongue in cheek. It is also obvious, however, that the underlying sentiment was intended. We should not need to persuade anyone to stay at this football club. Mark Hughes allegedly told the squad a few weeks back that if anyone wanted to leave they could. That includes him.
modes98 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Mark Hughes allegedly told the squad a few weeks back that if anyone wanted to leave they could. That includes him. Hughes told himself he could leave? I would have thought there would have been a puff of dust in the shape of Jason Roberts if he said that and Benni slowly walking towards the door, before slowly turning and wandering back to his seat after seeing Bowen put up his flag.

Brownie Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 Houllier as short as 2/1 in some places, is just over 3's on Betfair. Hughes drifting nicely to 5\1
brian_gallagher85 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I'm sure he does - and he also wants the Republic of Ireland job. Interesting and slightly scary. If you think the Newcastle betting is odd you should check out the Republic of Ireland job. Any word on the Irish job then Nicko....the only thing that would come close to Hughes staying for me would be Gerard getting our job Also, I wouldn't pay any attention to who says what on that, even the bookies or FAI...if the English think their FA is bad...you ain't seen nothing till you've seen our lot
tchocky Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 From the look on Shearers face I would say there is a lot more going on than ANYONE knows in respect of his position as potential manager. As for him not talking to KK for a long time, that is also utter rubbish. KK and AS BOTH played golf together at SHAW HILL at a charity event in September to raise money for a cricketer. Well how long is a long time? If they are friends then I'd say 4-5 months without talking to each other is a LONG time.
RevidgeBlue Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I can think of several who could keep the club in the top half on a limited budget...and maybe even win something. Bloody hell, not Owen Coyle! I disagree there nicko, with the Trustees wanting out and refusing to back the manager, the whole operation at Ewood is teetering precariously on the brink of the expertise of Hughes and his coaching staff, and his ability (so far) to unearth bargains in the transfer market. If he does leave he will take his staff with him and who then of any calibre will be prepared to put their reputation on the line with no financial support? Anyhow, on the bright side my contact who is close to Ashley's family still thinks it will be Houllier for the job. He is currently sunning himself in Cuba, but made a couple of phone calls yesterday and wanted me to put a tenner on for him.
nicko Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Any word on the Irish job then Nicko.... I heard last week that Venables was fed up waiting and talked to the Bulgarians. He didn't get that job either. Brady also told a good friend of mine that he is happy enough with the Arsenal kids and plans to stay. Although he could always do both jobs. Apart from that my info is limited.
1864roverite Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 So its Houlier and Shearer then for me Houlier allegedlt happy to work with Shearer according to his representatives
Cocker Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 So its Houlier and Shearer then for me Houlier allegedlt happy to work with Shearer according to his representatives I wonder what happens to people's bets if both get it?
Ricky Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Houllier tried it pretty unsuccesfully with Roy Evans. weren't they joint managers.
nicko Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 If that is to be the case then it would be Houllier as manager and Shearer as assistant. But please don't put the housekeeping on that yet.
brian_gallagher85 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I heard last week that Venables was fed up waiting and talked to the Bulgarians. He didn't get that job either. That word in italics makes me very happy ....nice that the Star over here, reporting every Saturday that the FAI are still waiting on him, Wouldn't mind Brady as he is the only Irish pundit with an ounce of sense and football knowledge. Looks like Newcastle are in better shape then!

Looks like Newcastle are in better shape then! The bottom line in all of this is that there are not many good up-and-coming managers about. Apart from Burnley and maybe Birmingham City - can anyone tell me who has made an inventive appointment lately? I know who I would have hoped Rovers went for if Sparky left...but I have suggested all along that this might come to nothing.
cn174 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I wonder what happens to people's bets if both get it? I dunno about on betfair, but I would guess in the shops in the 'interest of customer service' they would pay out on both. Within a shop the max bet was £50, so thier risk isn't going to be too great.
Brownie Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 There's been constant trickles of bets for Redkapp who is still as short as 20/1 on Betfair. How funny would that be ? Always had a deep hatred of Houllier and his pathetic excuses, combine this with the club of mass expectation and unwarrented media interest and you get a hate made in heaven. Does anyone remember they used to hold the monthly newcastle player of the month on Soccer am and get people to vote for the top 5 choices ?! I still cant believe it after all these years ! Why was this on a national programme ? They even used to show the player getting presented with the trophy !!!
