joey_big_nose Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Id have defoe in our squad - but i wouldnt say he is a certain starter ahead of Roque and Benni - especially if there are in form. If they were both on top note and defoe was then he would only be 3rd choice. I would have Defoe on every week instead of Benni. Benni has offered very little this year. Defoe would offer pace and desire to get behind the opposition defence. Something Benni does not do.

Hughesy Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Thats why I said on top form. Top form, benni got over 20 goals last season. Defoe isnt good at holding up a ball and he doesnt have anywhere near the technical ability or experience that Benni has. Defoe has started well at Pompey but he isnt the finished article yet.
Oklahoma Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Our players are always worse that the others... And I wonder how some of the rovers fans would feel if they were Newcastle fans, Probably some would already have commeted suicide or something... Vogel is ready to play, I think. He wants to be in Euro 2008 so I'm sure he stayed fit during the time he had no club. That's why he will probably be in the bench next game.
Roaming Rover Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 People say PhillipL doesn't know what he's talking about as he only watches Rovers from his big comfy chair in Malta. Then they judge Rovers, who we watch week in week out and see the good and (mostly!) bad against Pompy who, we have seem mainly via TV highlights. I would imagine if you watched Pompy week in week out they would put in some dire performances. As for comparing squads, at the moment some of our players are in a bit of a slump form wise. If you compared on what we know each individual can produce, Benni, Dunny, Reid, Emerton and Samba would all be knocking on a joint teams door. Anyway, thankfully, as it puts everything into perspective, I work with a Halifax town season ticket holder and they are going into administration with a 10 point deduction, which leaves them 2 points above the conference relegation zone...................so things could be worse!!
CircoWill Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I honestly can't believe how negative some people are getting. So our home form hasn't been great of late but you'd have all settled for a top 8 finish at the start of the season and we're pretty much on course for that. Give them a break and get behind them for once on Saturday.
modes98 Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Defoe playing regularly in any half decent Prem side gets 20 goals a season - no question. Whatever Pompey paid for him, it was a steal. Playing with the right midfield he could get 15-20 a season but I'd much rather have an on form Benni Mc, rather than changing our style to fit in with a striker. Just as long as Benni isn't in a mood then he's a lot better. Looking at Defoe's spurs career he played 139 games and only managed 43 goals. That's not amazing for a top striker. Equally playing for England he doesn't perform only 3 goals in 26 games. He is a decent striker but definitely a 1 goal in 3 games man.

He also scored 21 goals in cup competitions for Spurs in 22 starts. Defoe is a quality striker.

According to wikipedia : Defoe has played 267 games scoring 96 times, this works out a 36% goal conversion Benni has played 324 games scoring 133 times, this works out a 41% goal conversion What must be taken into consideration is that that Defoe made over 50% of his appearances at spurs, where he was the perennial substitute. Many of Benni’s appearances on the other hand have taken place in what we would deem ‘weaker leagues’, such as the Portuguese Liga & eredivisie. Where it is notably easier to score goals as a striker ; particularly if you play for one of the top sides. I agree Defoe is very good premiership striker if given the opportunity as a regular starter.
T4E Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 And another... http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,1...3323334,00.html Excellent - it's a good move all round. Hope he can get some goals.
philipl Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Excellent - it's a good move all round. Hope he can get some goals. Yes a hattrick for the Canaries on 5th April is definitely in order. He has an honourable tradition of ex and loaned Rovers forwards of ramming the dingle boos where it don't shine to uphold.
Presty On Tour Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 And another... http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,1...3323334,00.html nice move by everyone involved, hopefully he can do a good job and impress.
Tim Southampton Rover Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 It's a good move for him as they are struggling for goals, which means he will have to work hard to find the back of the net. This will help with his learning experience and will hopefully benefit us if he's a success there.

Wasting your time Roaming Rover..... that last paragraph is completely invisible to 75% of our members. .... with the last two both invisible in the case of a certain individual member.

If they were both on top note and defoe was then he would only be 3rd choice. Well he'd be in ahead of Benni for me. Only 8 games left and I am still waiting for some sort of form from benni. I think Defoe would link up with with Rocky. Silly to be even discussing it really.

nicko Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 There was some interesting news at the press briefing today...for 'embargo' reasons I can't go into detail until later. But it is both surprising and encouraging. No names, just an interesting development.
