Yep sadly logic has been in extremely low supply round these parts since 2010!

As I say we are where we are with the signing, the money was spent and as a result we are better off with him in the squad but for a price.

Still think that Rhodes, at this level and with half decent support, would bang em in by the truck load. Of course we over paid for him but give him consistent support and a forward looking team he's probably a better bet than anyone else in the league to score regularly. Unfortunately we are far from consistent going forward at home and too defensive away at the moment.

Here you go Jimmy

1. Glenn Murray England Crystal Palace 30

2. Jordan Rhodes Scotland Blackburn Rovers

Huddersfield Town 29

3. Charlie Austin England Burnley FC 24

4. Matěj Vydra Czech Republic Watford FC 20

Chris Wood New Zealand Leicester City

Millwall FC 20

Murray - free

Rhodes - £8m

Austin - small undisclosed fee

Vydra - loan

Wood - £1m

And this seasons top scorers

McCormack - 14 (undisclosed)

Ings - 11 (£1m)

Rhodes - 11 (£8m)

Vaughan - 10 (undisclosed small fee)

Vokes - 10 (£350k)

Austin - 9 (£4m)

One thing to say is Rhodes is high in both tables but is at least double anyone else in the list but the likes of Vaughan and Troy Deeney are a bit below both seasons but much much much cheaper and Deeney offers a lot other than goals.

If it was Rhodes or nobody then I'd have Rhodes, if you took logic into account we would possibly have been better with other options.

I can't help feeling your banging your head against a brick wall.

Well with hindsight if I was armed with the budget we peed away up the wall last season and I knew that Rhodes was going to score 40 goals in a season and a half, I'd spend 8m on him again in a heartbeat. You'd be crackers not to.

What I wouldn't do is squander millions upon millions on highly paid players in their mid to late 30's like Murphy Etuhu and Gomes, and with hindsight 3m and 33k p.w. on Best.

Then I wouldn't have spent substantial sums on bringing in (seven?) Unknown Portugese players with the possible exception of Nunes.

Then with hindsight I wouldn't have spent substantial sums of money bringing in the six assorted pieces of crapola in on loan rhat Appleton did.

So to summarise with hindsight I'd spend 8m again on Rhodes then instead of wasting millions upon millions of pounds on seventeen players who contributed absolutely nothing I'd attempt to reinvest that money on some players who actually made a difference.

Wonderful thing is hindsight :P

With hindsight surely I'd have left Rhodes exactly where he was, left the 8m in the bank and saved 1.5m pa in wages and offered Sean Dyche 10k pw. :tu:

A good point well made :)

I think I've said its my last post on the subject a million times then made the same point again

A few on here need to browse Ipswich forum The Tractor Boys for another set of fans view on Rhodes. There were numerous threads about him on there and quite a few of similar opinions on here as to his contribution/overall ability in games. They were obviously gutted that Keane booted him out and most would have him back in a heartbeat despite his perceived weaknesses. As one put it he's quite simply an outstanding goalscorer and that's a specialist trade that carries a high premium. im sure if he walked back in there tomorrow then they'd be in the mix by May.

If we are talking of hindsight then Hughes would never have left for City. Rovers would still be challenging for European spots and many Rovers fans wouldn't have had 'the love' battered out of them by his successors ;)

Not so much Hughes leaving as the £3m signing of Lassana Diarra.

Fair enough, that's your prerogative. I'm absolutely stunned that now understanding our financial meltdown you would spunk £8m on one player. Stunned! Maybe it's time to dig out that list of players who have scored over 20 in the championship and their respective transfer fees. You poo pooed it for some reason, I forget what it was. One thing is for sure though, it gives a very good indication of just what a colossal amount of money £8m is to teams in the second tier of English football, especially those that are facing financial oblivion like we are.

If you'd have looked at the wages that we were taking down with us last season and decided to add another £40pw on to it for JR then I'd have sacked you on the spot - and that's before you'd have even whispered the words Murphy & Etuhu ^_^ And for whats its worth Rev, I would be interested to dig that Murphy thread up again, my bet would be that you would have welcomed him with open arms - just a hunch.

Fact is when you get relegated from the PL the first thing you do is reduce the financial damage as much as possible. I don't call spending £8m and £40kpw on one player a very wise move. The biggest amount of money should have been spent removing the cretin in charge, appointing a competent board and allowing them to select the best possible manager for our situation. You then sit down with your board, manager etc and create a plan and a transfer budget which is in keeping with your financial situation. The transfer budget could still easily have been one of the biggest in the Championship.

£8m on one player, £8m. £11m and about £80k per week on our front line. In the foooking Championship - It's no wonder this club is in tatters. And incredibly, you tell me you'd still sanction the transfer, even with benefit of hindsight.

''Ultimately, if you can say that I'm a bad owner and we're winning championships, I can live with that. But if we're not making the playoffs and we're spending and losing money, then I have to look in the mirror and say maybe I'm not taking the necessary steps to doing what it takes to run an organization.''

Michael Jordan

Quote from Michael Jordan there. Perhaps he's 'bling' enough for Venkys to sit up and take notice.

I thought the hypothetical question as posed by Den was "If you had last season's transfer budget including the 8m spent on Rhodes to spend again how would you spend it?" rather than "Is it a good move to spend 8m on one player in our financial position?"

I don't pretend to know the exact ins and outs of our finances but given the totality of the money wasted since we were eelegated I very much doubt the money spenr on Rhodes will be the thing that tips us over the edge financially should it come to that in due course.

EDIT: If the question were posed in terms of "You can have Rhodes for a couple of seasons but that 8m spent will definitely tip you over the edge financially if you fail to get promoted" then obviously you'd give adifferent answer.

Okay then fair enough. On reflection and knowing how poor and in need of overhaul our squad is and has been for 3 years now, would you blow a huge amount of money (for a club our size which has just been relegated) on Jordan Rhodes? Don't forget btw, Steve Kean is still our manager :tu:

Orrrr would you, like surely most sensible football fans, use said money to;

- sack the imposter

- appoint a capable board

- go through a thorough selection process and ensure that the right manager is brought in to move the club forward

- Sit down and discuss financial restrictions and produce a suitable transfer budget that will allow you to build a strong, cohesive championship squad capable of challenging properly

- Discuss an £8m bid for one player and contemplate the £40kpw wages. Laugh at the idiocy of the concept and move back into reality.

- Target players that are within our budget, within our wage structure and are able to compliment each other to build a proper football team.

It's hardly bloody helped has it!

Hence my comment, 'it's just another mistake in the ever growing catalogue made by those complete keaners in Pune.'

Not so much Hughes leaving as the £3m signing of Lassana Diarra.

Not so much the refusal to back him with Diarra (and I think Huddleston) but that that was as a consequence of him asking if he could interview for the NUFC job a few weeks earlier. Odd outlook by Williams cos ambition is probably a necessary quality of every top manager. Also his record as a Golden Goose manager was extraordinary. That apparently spiteful decision by JW/Trust cost them an indecently quick 15m profit on Diarra when Real thought fit to pay over 20m for him.

You seem to have inside knowledge. I had no idea of any of that.

Was there a significant gap between his request for the interview and his eventual departure from Ewood?

Inside knowledge??? I seem to rem it was in a JW interview with the LT after he went! In answer to your question I think the interview was in Nov/Dec and he obviously didn't get it. Come the transfer window and despite his amazing record was refused funds for the players he wanted and we ended up with that hapless Swiss chap whose name escapes me for the minute. I noticed from my seat just above the bench that from then on Hughes pitch side demeanour had changed and darkened considerably. In fact I commented on a number of occasions that it would be his last season with us. A golfing holiday in spring with the odious gary Cooke sealed his our fate.

Oh I am so sorry...I missed the oint totally...was thinking about Souness!!

My Geordie mate told me there was a last minute change of mind up there...I think it was the day Roberts did his stuff at Bolton. Anyway the job was Hughes' then....

No need for me to tell you Leonard that Souness left a wreck of a squad. Hughes repaired it and made the club millions in the process. Needless to say since Williams appointed Ince and then this current lot have squandered the legacy in no time at all.

Pulis "We'll get linked with every Tom, Dick and Harry from now until the window closes, the answer is no. We couldn't afford Jordan Rhodes"

I think the reality of FFP is starting to hit home with the wages that (smaller) clubs are willing to pay. The top players at Man City etc will still earn mega-money, but there has to be a point where lower league players aren't getting offered £40k a week+. Unfortunately it is Rovers that are sat with all these big contracts for rubbish players (Best, DJC, Orr etc)

20 minutes of nothing then he just scored a superb goal

That's the unteachable quality he has, when he isn't a passenger as he was recently he's outstanding

Apparently he had a couple of chances today pretty much on a plate for him that he didn't put away, which is a little disappointing, but a great take for the goal he did score. If we can supply him more often, as we did today, he'll finish plenty.

Neither were guilt edge chances but you'd expect him to bag, then again the first goal was barely half a chance so he made up for that :)

Set us on our way and did some decent link up play, can't ask for too much more today
