This topic is giving me a headache. Apparently the owners are absolutely nuts for giving the greenlight on last seasons suicidal spending but are also absolutely nuts for not doing it again this year?

That's the crux of it :D

But promotion is the ONLY way to balance the books

Again, no one's talking about spending silly money like we did last year. But a NET spend of -£1.2m this summer is hardly the ambition of a team that NEEDS promotion to avoid financial meltdown. Also, last year we had a combination of Kean & Singh in charge of the transfer policy.

Bowyer has had little financial backing from the owners and has been forced to rebuild the squad on a pittance. The club stands at a critical cross-roads, and If the owners have any desire to salvage anything from this mess, they need to back their man in the transfer market so he can bring in players who can hit the ground running. It's difficult to do that when the chequebook's closed shut.

Disagree. Hodgson and Kidd spewed money big time but Souness, Hughes and Allardyce to varying degrees disprove your comments completely. You might put that down to the history books but a good current example of good management in a tight financial situation are Burnley.

I'd assume that we are absolutely at the limit with the bank.

This is a national bank we're talking about, not a casino.

You have to wonder at the sense of signing someone like Marrow, who will take up part of the wage budget. Seems like another straw on the camel's back

Don't forget it would be a leap in the dark to give lots of wonga to a wet behind the ears rookie

Hardly. It's been standard practice for the Venkymob since they trapped up and it's how we got in this mess. We have seen a succession of wet behind the ears rookies. Is it possible that the penny has finally dropped and they have seen the error of their ways?

Hodgson & Kidd spent vast sums of money, Drog. It's not comparable to what I'm advocating here. We've spent £1.8m this summer on new players, for a squad desperately in need of strengthening for literally a make-or-break season. Hughes & Allardyce still had funds available to buy the likes of Givet, Kalinic, Santa Cruz, McCarthy, Savage etc.

When given money Allardyce chose to spunk it all on some useless Croat ;)

Bowyer in comparison is working with odd buttons and pocket fluff

Not a totally fair comment cos it's well documented that he'd have 'spunked' that money on Robert Lewandowski.... but for that bloody Icelandic volcano. The fickle finger of fate eh?

That is the point. The transfer strategy this summer does not appear to fit with the promotion or bust scenario...

Kidd and Hodgson splashed the cash big time and unwisely in my recollection...Nathan Blake..£4 million!...Christian Dailly..£6million spring to mind...Kevin Davies....I'd have to think harder to be sure who bought whom etc

I sensed Hughes support in the market decreased during his tenure .. I thought Allardyce had by far the least support throughout his time....

Re: Marrow, I came to the conclusion he was signed on the assumption Etuhu could be offloaded. Possibly the case with kean Olsson (signed Taylor) too?

Agree but also wonder how much his signing has to do with his dressingroom/training ground influence? It was mentioned at the time (of his signing) but the Sky video (corner challenge) reinforced the idea in my mind.

Orr signed in january 2012 on a 2 and a half year deal so goes in june

Orr and Robinson signed new contracts last season when Kean was manager.

The contracts werent made public last summer. think something was posted on here about Orr new contract during the summer

You don't believe that chestnut do you? I did give you more credit than that. ;)

And Lewandowski trudging a lonely and ball starved furrow at the head of a direct approach would not have produced the Lewandowski we see today. More than likely he would now be in the wilderness like Kalanic.

I remember the rumour about Orr getting a new contract Chaddy but there is no record of it at all, I looked everywhere at the time,

I was bloody furious thinking Kean had rewarded him for his famous after match comments,LT and wiki say end of this season as stated

above, but transfermkt just has a ? and on soccerbase it's left blank.

Deary me. You have never understood Allardyce. To think he could only play one way tells me more about you than him.

There is a reason Kalinic went for similar money as he came. You work it out.

Too right. Sam can employ a dynamic 4-6-0 formation too, if the situation calls for it.

"Reported to be in the region of £6m".

As far as I am aware he signed for £7m plus?

He was far from the type of striker we needed. He could not deal with balls arrowed at his head whilst he was isolated in another postcode from his midfield.

He was a poorly researched last minute panic buy

others may he their wrong opinion ;)

Even with poor signings, Sam still got results.

We are so majorly effed! The only thing that can solve this and stop the club going into administration is getting promoted. We are four points outside the playoffs at the moment, which is a slight positive. If we don't go up, any player with any bit of value will be sold. Rhodes, Best, Rochina, Dann, Hanley, Kilgallon, Nunes, Campbell and Henley will all be sold and that's just to name a few. Then next season, we will have a shocking squad, with possible points deducted for going into administration and then we will be favourites for the drop and then we will be staring into the abyss. And that's just the PG version of the events to come.

If it's a lesser quality squad in a lower league but without the Venkys it is something I would accept. At least we would have our club back.

Tin baths, luxury! I used to have to go to Belper street slipper baths.

In Darwen we used to have to bathe in broken glass with warm lard chucked in :)

The average salary in our league is about 4-5K a week or just about 200K a year.

Is that all, I thought it was more than that?

As a mate who worked in financial regulation once told me. "If you owe the bank £100,000, you're in trouble. If you owe the bank £1,000,000 they're in trouble."

Very true but surely in our case it relates to Balaji Rao rather than Rovers?

Interesting to read Leicester are in as much trouble as Rovers but have a strong chance of solving that in 6-7 months time.
