Downing has been a very good signing after very quickly being written off on here by some people.

Lenihan, Downing and Williams are all experience defenders. So Mulgrew being out is big loss but the other players have to step up and take the chance to play.

The centre back area was address by us signing Downing.

It's a bit generous to say that Lenihan is an experienced defender. Especially given this 'experience' totals about half a season and he's a central midfielder by trade.....

Don't let idle facts like that get in the way of an argument, K-Hod. God.

I don't think it's that we don't need to cover for what you stated. But from the list above there is no one available, to us.

You're not going to find it all in one at this level,  but surely we should be looking to replace at least some part. Then we'll have to hope that others step up to take on other bits. But you can't expect them to do it all

According to someone connected with u/23s,(before Mulgrew got injured) Mowbray has advised Ward to try and get another club, only few months left on his contract, and if happens Wharton doesn’t go on loan,if he doesn’t get fixed up,Wharton probably will go out of loan, but with Mulgrew getting injured might change his thinking.

Tony Mowbray has confirmed that #Rovers captain Charlie Mulgrew has had a scan on his ankle today, adding: "The input from the medical department was that it might not be as bad as we first feared, so fingers crossed for when we get the results."

Fingers crossed then...

What's the best we can hope for here, one month?

Depending on the severity, if it's a light sprain probably looking somewhere in the ballpark of between 4-6 weeks for healing/rehab and then getting him back into training at a guess? (Any physios/sport scientists would be able to give a more realistic figure though).

Although given he's a professional athlete (and just assuming) his ligaments etc will be stronger than the average person's it may well be slightly sooner than that, but personally I wouldn't think it would be worth risking trying to rush him back as it could go again and then he'd be out for significantly longer.

Just read Mowbrays quotes in LT. All going well 2-3 weeks

Asked about transfers, the manager says: “We’ve still got a few questions out there for clubs, but I generally feel that we got our business done early with the targets we wanted. I’m not anticipating a busy one on Wednesday, but let’s see." #Rovers

Tony finishes up with some more team news, saying: “Darragh is probably a week away, Antonsson and Gladwin maybe 10 days, and Corry could be in the squad tomorrow." #Rovers

From Mowbray's comment at the top about transfers I would suggest maybe 1 player coming in at best.

TM on Mulgrew: "The initial thought is the swelling the day after was not as bad as anticipated by the medical department."

TM: "That's a good sign. He'll have a scan this afternoon and we await the results. Let's hope it's a week or two and not a month or two."

Well Mowbray is looking at week or 2 at best

This is the captain,a huge dressing room influence, our best striker of a dead ball, arguably our best player or if not, one of them, usually reliable defender in a specialist position, lynch pin and organiser, and we don't need to bring in cover for any of that?

I think one issue is that we are unlikely to replace all that with one player!

Can't understand on what planet anyone would think Ward was better than Wharton in the first place anyway.

Wharton must have run over everyone's cat at Ewood. Comes in last season does well then gets shuffled back in the queue to accomodate the signing of Wes Brown. This season he can't get in the squad because of bloody Ward.

I know but you can try to deal with at least the centre half issue

Wharton going to Doncaster on loan assuming Mulgrews injury isn't bad.

A club in League 1, thats interesting. Good for him and us in one way, on the other hand....if he is good enough to play for them, surely good enough for a place on our bench

But why would we want one of our youngsters stagnating on the bench? Good idea for me, especially since Darragh is returning soon

If he's good enough to play for another Club in the same division then by definition he's good enough for us surely?

It's bizarre.

When everybody is fit Wharton would be fourth choice at best. It makes sense to get him out playing at the highest level possible to gain much needed experience. Clearly the club value him to give him a new deal but feel he isn't quite ready yet.

It makes sense to me.

No, that doesn't really make sense. Some teams are better than others... :)

He doesn't have to stagnate if he gets game time

It isn't the worst idea, I would just like to see him ahead of Ward

Mulgrew, Downing, Williams, Darragh, Wharton and Ward. Even forgetting Matty Platt, that’s far too many to give game time and I think if he’s guaranteed to start at Donny, it’s a no brainer.

Ya, perhaps. Hopefully we won't need to play them more than once this season anyway!

Mulgrew could be out for a while, Lenihan isn' t even back yet, Williams ain't a specialist CB and Ward is useless.

Madness to even contemplate sending him out on loan imo.
