v Bristol City (h) - 3/9/22

Hmm, not pretty today, but the writing was on the wall from the early stages of the game.

Travis isn't a full back, and was completely exposed in that role today.

The midfield was bossed by a young player, but unfortunately it was their number 7 who stole the show.

We missed the harrying and chasing that Dolan brings to the side in the first half, with Hirst looking ineffective.

We looked fairly solid at the back, but the 0-1 scoreline at half time understates the dominance of Bristol in the first 45.

The substitutions were fine, other than Edun, who appeared to be more of a liability than an asset in much of what he did.

At 1-2 we still might have nicked something from the game, but it was killed off by their third, which again came from fannying about with the ball in midfield. They just picked us off and only their own profligacy in front of goal kept their score down.

There was definitely something missing from the side today. Vale did well enough when he came on, but goodness me he needs a goal. Corrado Grabbi mk 2 as it stands. Fair play to Dolan and BBD for sticking the ball in the onion bag. But when there are so many holes in your own, it isn't a surprise that the opposition had a better day of it than us.

Where from here? Back to the drawing board. That's where. Based on that showing, and the notion that anyone can beat anyone in this league, it looks like another season of mid-table mediocrity at best. As long as we put on something special for the Dingles.....eh?

COYB!

The following phrase needs banishing. No Rovers fan should ever utter it again:

”(insert midfielder/centre half name) can play right back”

Why is it the only position where people are happy with poorly equipped, non-specialist players playing there?

Days like today show you why teams were unwilling to meet the Brereton valuation. Granted I missed his goal, so I’m basing it on his performance up until then, but he looked more like an ineffective winger today than a 20 goal a season man.

Pickering is a mostly tidy footballer, but a terrible defender. His positional sense is dreadful.

Wharton showed glimpses but was hamstrung a bit with an early yellow that should never have been.

Lack of creativity was a massive problem today. Hedges with by far his worst performance. Dolan the only bright spark.

I don't think the defence is entirely the problem - there are huge gaps on the transition. That won't change even with new personnel in the defence.

I do agree that we're not relegation material, we'll be around mid table. Is mid table championship and getting battered by teams like Bristol City and Reading good enough though?

I can accept the occasional thrashing, bet we're getting well beat most weeks at the moment.

As quite a few of us have said for a few weeks, the midfield is the big problem at the moment.

Yet it’s the same midfield that dominated vs Blackpool away.

we have a lot of youngsters in the first 11 and the inconsistency that comes with that.

JDT wants to play a certain way, how do you do that with the injuries we have to contend with atm? Bristol city played the way we will in a few months time.

I also thought Hirst up front working the channels was ok and showed some promise. I also think playing 5 at the back when everyone is fit would work well. Wharton is a massive loss and can’t wait until he is back.

As frustrating as it is we did have 3 of our best defenders out and aside from Hyam the rest of that backline is woeful and was bound to concede goals

Playing 2 relatively inexperienced young boys in the centre was a poor decision though imo.

Would be great if we could find an older expericed centre mid on a free transfer, Drinkwater could be ideal in theory depending on his wage demands but worth getting him in for a trial at least maybe

Sixes being very generous

Only Pickering got less. We where average all over the pitch today. Need to get some first team players back on the pitch ASAP and perhaps a formation change. Today my half time changes would have been:

Kaminski

Carter Phillips Hyam

Dolan Travis Morton Pickering

Dack

Brereton Hirst

That would have been Wharton (yellow card after about 5 minutes) and Hedges (wasn’t up to speed) off for Dolan and Phillips. Looks like defensive subs but the formation change would have improved us.

At 2.00pm desperately disappointed I couldn't make the game today (after Wednesday's performance which fair whet the appetite) due to work commitments, come 5.20pm, feckin delighted I couldn't!

Based on what I've read and heard from some who went, we were sh1te.

Many of us thought we didn't do enough in the window and that seems patently clear.

Injuries are hurting us but are part and parcel of the game and it's why you need a squad with both depth and quality.

Most of us thought we need strengthening in the full back positions and that is as clear as day.

Many of us thought we needed a physical hard b@stard to boss midfield and that is as clear as day.

Many of us thought we needed strengthening up front and were sceptical about Hirst who hasn't netted in the Championship after 30+ outings and he doesn't seem to have impressed today and many of us didn't think Vale 'had it' at this level - concerns confirmed today.

It is a concern JDT seems to get it totally wrong so often but at this stage, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt given the absolute crock of sh1te of a hand I think Mowbray dealt him.  I am puzzled why Dack was hooked, unless injured, as we need all the quality we can get on the grass and as I've posted before, we need to know what Dack has got left in his locker.

As for Broughton, hope I don't bump into him this weekend because, to me, he aint delivered as he should.

I’m surprised at some of the Hirst comments, I thought he was really good today and something we’ve been missing. He ran the channels, got in behind, would have scored other than a deflection. A good debut and plenty of promise.

I though he showed some promise. Had to do better with that one opportunity he had, but he worked hard. Tough being a focal point when we created so little for him.

Yep, we could tell before the game this isn't sustainable moving forward, need Travis back in there ASAP regardless of RB alongside Mola.

Well that was shite.

I thought Dolan did well when he came on but other than that am struggling for compliments.

Special shout out to Morton and Edun who were both pathetic.

The amount of times BBD made an intelligent run and he wasn’t found for a sideways pass was bewildering.

travis and carter got exposed down the right and the front four never interchanged or looked like a coherent unit at any point.

lots of work to do this week because I can’t stomach another loss at that shithole on robin park

Vale was atrocious.  Couldn't trap a bag of cement.

Edun, like JRC, is dreadful. They’d be the first two out the door this summer for me. Neither are adequate back up for Brittain or Pickering. Frankly, I’d have rather we kept Bell than got Edun who has a strange ability to be equally as shite no matter which of his four positions (left back, left wing back, central midfield, left winger) he plays.

He’s the football equivalent of the handyman that comes in to repair things at student houses whilst at Uni. Not qualified in anything specific, can’t really do the job and you can only accept their work if you’re willing to only squint at it or turn a blind eye.

It’s a pretty good description tbh

I was once speaking to Ronnie Clayton about Nathan Blake:

”He couldn’t trap sandbag that lad” 😂

Cracked me up.
