roverandout Posted May 25 Posted May 25 Hoddle should have taken him to 98 world cup. Him and le tissier would have given us something different. Especially when we were down to 10 men against Argentina. Hoddle just didn't like players who were equal to his ability 2 Quote
chaddyrovers Posted May 25 Posted May 25 Gazza was a very good player and I will always remember his goal against Scotland in Euro 96 2 Quote

... Posted May 25 Author Posted May 25 8 years old in my blue n white stripes pyjamas sat on the bottom step sobbing my heart out after Waddles miss and mum saying "That's it theyre out he's missed it what a shame" Tears just came out and i didnt even have a clue why. All I know is I love watching England in tournaments I dont care if its boring to most. Still have those hopes and dreams as a kid, seeing them play. I owe it to that 8 year old to win a major. If we won a world cup I'd absolutely lose my shit 🤣 You can imagine the rest when we won several shoot outs in recent years. Yep I cried. 1 Quote

He was unbelievebly talented, but with his lifestyle it's hard to say he was ever completely on it. Bit like Paul McGrath for Ireland, he was immense but there is always a feeling of "imagine without all the off-field stuff how good he could have been. 2 Quote

What a player he was though. Regarding Paul McGrath - his knees held him back as much as his off the fired behaviour apparently. I believe he hardly trained in the later part of his career because of knee trouble. Quote

Although I don't remember watching any of the 1994 World Cup games live on TV due to the time difference, I vividly remember waking up the day after the final and finding out Baggio had missed his penalty. Also fond memories of playing the official USA 94 video game on the Sega Game Gear. It was like a poor imitation of Sensible Soccer but I loved every second of it 🥲. On Gazza...yeah, the goal against Scotland is iconic. 1 Quote

His Knees were a major issue and you are correct he just played and never trained when he entered his 30s, Quote

arbitro Posted May 29 Posted May 29 I refereed McGrath towards the end of his career when he went to Sheffield United. During a break in play I had a chat and I could smell the alcohol on his breath. Despite that he was the best player on the pitch and his natural athleticism was apparent. 2 Quote

I went to a Sportsman’s Evening a while back where Dean Saunders was the guest speaker. Somebody asked him who the best player he’d ever played with was. He said “ Paul McGrath, he was incredible given he never trained “. 2 Quote

Gazza could run with the ball, Hoddle couldn’t. Players that can run with the ball are a defenders nightmare. Gazza could play for 90 minutes, Hoddle couldn’t. 2 Quote

The season after Italia 90 he was pretty well unplayable.Spurs played a cup tie - possibly against Blackpool - and he was so much above the level of everyone else it was ridiculous. My dad always reckoned Duncan Edwards was the best player he ever saw play and even he said Gazza came close. Then Gazza's recklessness did his knee and he was never the same again. 3 Quote
