Absolutely enthralling, theatre, test match cricket at its best and after 5 days it could go either way.

Come on England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Poor defeat that for England - gift wrapped the game for Australia.

Hopefully Stokes and Baz learn from this - controlled aggression is the way forward.

Absolutely no need to short yourself 50 runs with two set batsmen teeing off on an exhausted Australian bowling attack at the end of day one. Also no need for Root / Brooks et al to run past a Lyon ball trying to hit it into the next county.

That's the last two tests now that England have lost & both through reckless arrogant decisions from the Captain. In Wellington it was enforcing the follow on and in this test by leaving runs out there in the first innings. You get your runs in the first innings.

and here come the critics who will complain about England's style of play but without that we wouldn't' have got 5 days of entertaining cricket and the cricket public.

Stokes and McCullum have committed to playing this style and I expect them to continue to do this

They say with age comes wisdom, what absolute tripe!

Great test, England lost this in the field  shelving 5 golden chances to take Aussie wickets.

Cummings knock was superb, credit where credits due.

Can’t wait for the next test.

Horse manure.

Test cricket lasted 5 days and was entertaining long before this Bazball nonsense came along. It was the silly Bazball mindset that led to the silly declaration and Root and Brook and others throwing their wickets away with daft shots

England lost and are 1-0 down against the unspoken enemy when they should be 1-0 up.

Unforgiveable

Cricket "theatre" bollocks and Bazball bollocks

That was a match England should never have lost.

You don't give that lot an inch and we let them into the match with the reckless declaration

Dropped catches, and a poor keeper didn't help either. TBF if Root and Stokes had caught today's chances they would have been sensational and probably won us the game.

The sheer folly of that declaration grates.

We lost to the Aussies. I would prefer if we all batted like paint job Kawanja if we won against the convicts.

There is nothing wrong with being positive but England's play at times is reckless & brain dead, the declaration in this game was just crazy. As I said on here on Friday If Australia were told after losing the toss that they would have been batting at close with England having made less than 400 they would have been very happy. You get your runs in the 1st innings, England could easily have made 450 first innings and put down a real marker early on instead they let Australia off the hook. The first innings of a series is a chance to put down a marker from the off think back to Australia batting first under Waugh in 2002 they made nearly 500 under Ponting in 2006 they made over 600.

Again with my limited cricket knowledge - purely mathematically, it seems that it might have been better if they were chasing 100 runs from the last 2 wickets rather than 50?

The declaration would have only been a success if we'd taken a wicket or two that evening

Sums it up. They did a professional solid job against all the Bazball hype - and away from home too on England's "favourite" grouind too. Lord's next - and England rarely win there in the Ashes

Cannot stand the convicts and handing them a win like that really grates. They'll be lapping it up - and that really grates too

Should never have happened, we should have made 450-550 and put down a marker and put them on the back foot, but we threw it away.

But it's "theatre" apparently.

You’ve got to give the Aussies credit for snatching that game away from England in the manner they did. Cummins and Lyon were superb at the end under tremendous pressure at a sold out Edgbaston.

The public can’t get enough of this current England side, tickets are like gold dust, can’t wait for Lords!

I don't think we were ever reckless at all.

On scoring our runs in the first innings, yes England did this and Stokes wanted to get Aussies in that night to get a couple of early wickets that night,  had we done this he would be genius and being praise to the hilt. Sadly for too many people want to look for excuse and play the blame game instead. We lost this by not taking chances like Broad no ball or Bairstow miss stumping.

TBH Jim, I've been expecting this type of tripe for a while against Stokes and McCullum trying to entertain people and play positive cricket.

We lost this on not taking our chances like Broad no ball or Bairstow not taking the stumping

We were in the driving seat in this game and we blew it. Now we have to win two tests to get the Ashes back. Complete self inflicted wound.

The only entertaining cricket is winning cricket.

The tripe is your insistence that "Bazball" is the only way to play

Did the Aussies play “ Bazball “ when they were chasing down the winning total. In any game you get your foot on your opponents neck and keep it there. We had our foot on their necks and took it away. The Aussies will be pissing themselves tonight.

improve our fielding and stop balling no-balls and we will win and get the Ashes back

the person blaming bazball is people like you which we all know was coming if we lost the first test. instead of actually looking at the game objective and the proper and real reason is our failure to take our chances like Bairstow's miss stumping or Broad's no ball

Spot on chaddy, don’t forget WINNING cricket too.

Stokes record speaks for itself:

Ten wins in 12 as captain, famous victories over New Zealand, India, South Africa and Pakistan, all through a style of play in his image, underlined Stokes' worth as a captain. The individuals and the team have not just mimicked his approach to cricket but also his approach to all of them.

exactly. This new era of Stokes and McCullum we continue to play positive cricket and and winning cricket as you said, sadly we know that some people wouldn't like it if we lost their test and would loan and complain about Bazball when actually it has nothing to do with it. Our fielding was the main problem and bowling no-balls
