January Transfer Window.

Not too sure they were insulting offers, but maybe someone knows better than me on that. I have no idea what the amounts were. I have no inside information, but maybe some people do, but perhaps a rethink has now taken place, given so many have turned down previous contract offers.

JDT gives a bit of a transfer update, nothing major really - but again the "money issue" was mentioned.
Sounds like we're dealing in peanuts here, would probably be wise to not expect any major signings this window folks.

Unless we sell BBD of course... but then again, would we even be able to spend the funds?

Hence why it's a big statement of intent - has Brougton convinced the owners that it's in our best interest to sell BBD and reinvest the money, or is it more of the same scratching around with peanuts when we desperately need reinforcements.

That and it puts paid to the idea we have any kind of 'model' that involves developing youngsters and then selling them on for big profit to further reinvest in the team to eventually achieve promotion in a sustainable way. If we're just going to let players' contracts run down, as happened with Nyambe, Lenihan, Rothwell and probably BBD

I think this is the plan. But Mowbray and Waggot have a fair bit to answer for as well in terms of those players walking on frees. The previous regime has a lot to answer for. It strikes me that the plan was following that model, but like in any business or walk of life, words are cheap without a plan with tangible actions. Under the previous regime we wasted a lot of money on a bloated, unbalanced squad (Holtby, Downing etc) at the exact time that those assets should have seen their contracts renewed. The philosophy was not backed up by the people at Ewood, and the owners are too distant to question what was happening.

We've already seen many younger players with potential resale value given longer contracts and that's the evidence to me that JDT and GB are doing things properly. Brereton is the exception to this because of his contract situation which is in part down to a hangover from poor planning under Mowbray.

"It’s a difficult window the January window especially if you can’t cope with the salary demands because we want to get players in to help the team and get better as a club. We’ll be looking at all departments and see what we can choose. If there’s one attacking player going out then we need to get one player in of course.”

Tomasson has spoken openly about the January window, despite deflecting many of the questions to Rovers’ director of football Gregg Broughton when it came to the summer window. The head coach sees it as a real opportunity for Rovers to strengthen, and not simply because of their league position.

Rovers’ transfer budget was set at the start of the season, so any funds remaining from the summer window, when around £4.5m was spent, will be free to use this month.

That doesn’t leave the club with much wriggle room and needing to be creative in their dealings, with Tomasson previously hinting that agreements such as the one which saw Ryan Hedges arrive 12 months ago being a potential model to follow.

It is very promising that we are seeing the youngsters being tied down. I have to admit that I honestly thought Phillips would have gone, so it is a bonus to see him sign, especially when we seem him perform like he did yesterday.

Like most people on here, I simply want to see the club prosper and sincerely hope we have started to turn the corner with the contracts.

That's plain silly. I'm assuming the club learned its lesson and those players benefitted. About time.

We don't know that they aren't. The offer to Lenihan, according to Waggout (sp), would have made him the highest paid player at the club but Boro blew us out of the water. Same with Rothwell.

I've no idea what we offered either of them. They didn't accept did they? The mistake was to let things run down so long and leave it too late.

Your narrative is that the Club never gets it wrong and you have a few mates!

Oh, the way you were criticising the club I thought you were privy to all the finer details of the contract discussions. My mistake😋

And I never said the club never gets it wrong.

Apart from that, good post😁

Alan Nixon saying we want Cover striker. Cover defender. Somebody like Ebiowei would have been a great wide option too.

Down playing how much money we actually to spend. Smart tactic from him.

Selling BBD objectively leaves us with less chance of a playoff place. I don't understand what logic anyone who wants to sell him can possibly be applying. The budget's won't increase and in order to replace his goals, it would cost more than we bring in for him.

Talk of Gyokeres (not even the same position) when the guy's valued at £18million!!!

I agree with BBD point and that's be my point that selling him would give us less chance of a playoff place

You would need to sign 2 players to replace him

Hmmm, would love that to be the case... do you know something we don't?

I feel like he's just trying to be totally transparent, for the fans... so we don't expect too much and end up disappointed etc.

No I don't have any inside info but I wouldn't expect JDT to say we have loads of money to spend if we do.

I think we need a couple of signings in. Full back cover if Edun and Mola go. Then a striker in or If we could bring in someone like Cantwell or Dembele in then move BBD to playing up front

I'm happy with our centre midfield options

All I've heard so far are reasons why we can't do things and will struggle. No prizes for excuses and hard luck stories in this game.

Tomasson will rightly expect backing in January. If not now then when?

Meanwhile at Middlesbrough no worries about FFP they just want promotion and will back their manager to get it.

BBD won’t play up front. If he was going to do it he’d have done it by now. His strength is running from deep wide areas with the ball. Not playing with his back to goal. You can forget about that one. He needs to stay where he is and we need to sign a Gallagher replacement who actually likes playing up front.

You don't need to say the club never gets it wrong, its implicit in your posting.

"thought you were privy to all the finer details of the contract discussions"---not sure how you came to that conclusion, I'm as clueless about the details as you are.

I do know however that if there are players you want to keep, you reward them incrementally, not leave them on their original wage till the contract is running out.

They offered Rothwell and Lenihan new contracts on better terms. Same with BBD. We can't compete on wages with the likes of Boro and B'mouth. These are the facts.

Ahh fair enough!

I think we're desperately in need of a gritty CDM... Ben Pearson on loan with an option to buy, that would be ideal.

If they refuse to sign contracts we aren't letting the contracts run down. They are.

They were all offered contracts.

Then you sell them before it gets to the point where they can walk for nothing. Otherwise the model doesn't work, and indeed it hasn't really worked for us so far outside of AA. If you're relying on players to sign any new contract offered and to only sell when it's most convenient for the club then I think we can conclude from the past few years this is not sensible. Either we are not adhering to the model in question, or the people in charge of the operation were completely incompetent in executing that plan. The players running down their contracts is irrelevant as any worthwhile plan will factor contract length into account and ensure arrangements are made to either renew well ahead of time or sell if there's little hope of a renewal and only a year or eighteen months left.

There will be cases when for whatever reason the player can't be sold or refuses to leave, but we already know that wasn't the case with Rothwell or BBD, and there have been bids in for Lenihan in the past so I am sure we'd have gotten something for him if we'd made him available. Nyambe I'm less sure about, but the point is the club had options in most cases. We chose, and with BBD are seemingly continuing to choose, to let players leave for nothing rather than sell them when appropriate.

Interest in Mola from another Championship club. Sounds like he may be off too.

Best for all parties.

That's what I've been most impressed with about JDT; if you're not playing well then you're dropped, if you're not good enough then you're shipped out. There are no favourites.

Two players signed late in the window - Hirst and Mola - nowhere near the level required.

Don’t need to spend a lot of money in January. I’m sure the club have targets & also looking at players who they want in the summer who they could get in early.

On top of that there are loads of quality players in the PL who aren’t getting game time - quite a few will become available towards the end of the window.

Djed Spence - not had a kick for Spurs but tore the Championship apart from RB last season.

Joe Gelhardt - not getting much game time at Leeds, they’ve just signed a new striker and linked with another £30m move.

Sam Surridge - not playing at Forest, 7 goals in 20 games last season, including some appearances off the bench.

The list goes on…

3 questions

1) Why is it that their crowds are so much higher than ours? They weren't before

2) How much per year do you think they make from those extra fans? Enough to spend millions and millions on new signings every window?

3) How much of that extra money is already eaten up by a higher wage bill and bigger spending over the last few years?

As I've referenced many times before, there's no evidence Rovers are doing anything to combat FFP - one look in the club shop proves that - which suggests to me it either isn't an issue or is a convenient excuse to hide behind

The re emergence of Rankin-Costello surely negates the need for a new right back. Edun is adequate cover at left back so as far as the full back positions are concerned I think we we are covered. Ditto centre halves. We need a midfield enforcer as I believe Travis is spent and a striker or two.
