Still leaves too much discretion in the hands of the referee for me. Would prefer an independent timekeeper (4th official) tasked with measuring it.

Hopefully a step in the right direction but worry they are more bothered about appearing to be doing something than they are actually doing it. FFP rules testament to that.

The offside one still worries me a bit.

Is it still saying that this is a legitimate goal?

Surely not. Otherwise linesman looking along the line now have VAR to help because they can't always get it right if a player is offside, but defenders with their back to the striker are meant to be able to work out if the striker is offside in order to decide whether to try to play the ball or not?

The time keeping clamp down will be forgotten about by September, like a lot of these new season initiatives tend to be…

My understanding is that the Delegate will also estimate the time lost and if it doesn't marry up with the referee then the referee will lose marks. And marks are the lifeblood of any referee. I can't find the EFL figures but I was told that the average ball in play time in League Two is 48 minutes.

Premier League averages are below.

No debate about it - the defender has had to play the ball because the striker is running in behind him. Therefore, he's influenced the play - offside.

Looking at the Championship this season, obviously its bang average in general but there are very few really obviously poor teams. The worry is if we dont recruit that there isnt that usual dense layer of real shite should we end up in a rut due to a thin squad, lack of goals and lack of experience.

Cardiff have recruited well and have an attack far superior to us. Birmingham have also recruited well and should be more steady this season, and both Plymouth and Ipswich look good enough for the league to avoid relegation. Huddersfield have Warnock too so will stay up. Maybe looking at Rotherham, QPR and Sheff Wednesday as the weakest 3. Rotherham usually dont make a second season and dont have the strongest side, our first away game could be important. QPR are managed by Ainsworth who was overhyped on here as a Blackburn lad and look light although do have a core (Begovic, Fox, Clarke Salter, Field, Chair, Willock and maybe Dykes) who are solid at this level, and Sheff Wednesday have not really strengthened.

Obviously. 😆

When people say the league is as tough as it's ever been every single season, I usually ignore it as cliché, but this time it looks extremely tough on paper.

Bang average? No chance.

https://sqaf.club/amortisation-football/

The link above on amortisation explains how this is done, but the overly simple way of looking at things is fees received from selling players are counted on the current years accounts (minus his "book value"), but fees spent on new players are split over the length of a players contract (up to a maximum of 5 years).

So if a club sells a forward for £20M, they can technically buy a dozen new players for a combined £100M all on 5 year contracts and remain FFP compliant at least for the first season (they may have issues for each subsequent season as they have to find £20M income to offset against the £20M/year spend that they are already committed to on top of whatever they spend going forwards)

Also in the case of Coventry, you have to remember that they were in all kinds of trouble less than 12 months leading to a fire sale of one Don Hyam.

They are now in the fortunate position of having a season where they had a negative transfer balance counting into their three year FFP average.

Rovers showed competent management in getting Hyam how and when we did.

A lot of hype around the relegated teams and how they're going to walk the league. We'll see.....👀

BBC coverage of the Championship is abysmal but they have stirred themselves to write this:

What is striking is unlike Burnley last season, the relegated outfits haven't done a thorough job of sorting out their squads yet. They seem to be relying on the shell shocked relegated players who aren't good enough to get a transfer away.

Coady has dramatically fallen apart in 18 months from England International to surplus at Wolves to a loan failure at Everton sidelined by Dyche to being a very expensive buy for Leicester.

As for Leicester spending another 9m on Harry Winks, if you want to hear a North London torrent of negative expletives, just say his name to a Spurs supporter.

better listening to podcasts on spofity like not the top 20 and Championship chat. Sky Sports coverage of the EFL should be miles better given their investment into the right of the EFL live football.

I am very surprised how slow all 3 relegation clubs have been in the transfer market. I think Southampton will be the best out of those 3 teams. Very impressed by Stoke transfer business aswell this summer.

What strikes me about the relegated teams is that all 3 have significant risk to them.

Southampton have gone for a manager who is the definition of style over substance. Given that and the spineless way they went down - that culture may be hard to get rid of - despite some talent I definitely wouldn't be backing them to get back up.

Leeds seem to have let everyone go out on loan. (Strange that.) As you say the squad is far from sorted but they seem to have shed a lot of talent. Feels like it's a starting again job.

Likewise with Leicester. Add in that assistant managers don't always make good managers and it's a heck of a risk. Big difference between assisting at City to leading at Leicester. Mind you Kompany did OK so it can work. All the same though seems risky to me.

James ward-prowse will score 20 goals in this league.  Amazed no-one is prepared to pay the fee for a guaranteed goals and assists from midfield

Clubs have bid for him . Southampton want 35-40m.

He won't be there come end of this transfer window.

Still massive changes to happen at these 3 relegation clubs

20 goals?

Seems like a deadlock at the moment. If he is genuinely being priced at £40m as reported, its little wonder he hasnt been taken yet. Good player but you can definitely find better for cheaper. I know it was due to a clause but Mac Allister went to Liverpool for less and Ward Prowse couldnt lace his boots. English tax.

Squads will change but the relegated trio look so much stronger than anyone else, even allowing for the likes of Ward Prowse, Lavia, Walker Peters, Livramento, Gnonto, Adams and of course Leicester have already been raided. Many of the questions may surround the managers rather than clubs.

Southampton have loads of top Championship players, Bree, Manning, Armstrong, Adams, Tella and Smallbone, plus exciting younger players like Edozie, Alcaraz, Mara and Shea Charles, the main question is the weird managerial appointment. Leeds have players who were out on loan like Cresswell, Drameh and Gelhardt, again experienced Championship quality like Harrison, Darlow, Cooper, Bamford, Ayling, James and some interesting talent like Summerville, Rutter, Ampadu and Sinistierra. Leicester have recruited well in Coady, Winks, Mavidivi and Doyle amongst others and still have lots of quality left over.

Beyond that, Coventry are showing some serious ambition and Stoke have recruited well.
