Clean sheet today, Toth’s value rising if he’s now an international first choice keeper.

And hopefully that't the last we'll see of Pears. Glad he's locking down his position.

As opposed to playing his whole career with Rovers?

As opposed to getting him to sign a new contract at the going rate

Fair enough. I just find it annoying when, of everything there is to be angry about, people are upset at the prospect of a player being sold, especially someone we've brought in from an obscure league mainly to make a profit on him in the future!

I do not think that it is the sales that people get upset about, its that with proper contract management, most sales are either completely avoidable, or we would be able to ask for much higher fees, which could then (in theory at least) lead to us having more to invest on improving the squad.

The frustration comes from trying to save a few pennies in the here and now by not attempting to renew contracts until the last minute, or offering derisory wages (when compared to our rivals), which in turn leads to panicked sales (with a year left on the players contracts) for a relative pittance

That theory left Ewood a long time ago.

You don't generally buy goalkeepers with the prospect of making a profit on them. They rarely change hands for high values. Any profits in question are usually small compared to profits from spending similar amounts on outfield players.

Gradually becoming one of our star players with Cantwell and Abeiosu.

Does anyone know when his contract is up as be a shame to lose him next summer if going into his last 12 months?

June ‘27 (so your fear may well become reality).

Just watched the extended Highlights of the Southampton game and the brief Leicester highlights.

This guy is the real deal and will be at a top club within a year or two.

Unless he gets injured!

Hope to God I'm wrong but please don't let it be an ACL injury. It looked so innocuous at the time but those can sometimes be the worst.

when it happened @rog of the rovers said the same to me & I recall Shearer playing on for a short while after he did his. Looked innocuous but…

If Toth is out for a while, it may not be the end of the world. What would be required, is for Pears to stand up and prove that he is a professional goal-keeper. I hope if called upon, he can do that.

Yep, always a worry when there is nothing in it at the time. Really gotta hope he's not out for the long term.

Bad tackle from behind, got up, my knee felt a bit odd but OK and tried to play on, then I collapsed in a heap. Damaged PCL. It was my last ever game of football, never played again. Hope Toth is OK

He did have plenty of clean sheets by my recollection but that was more down to the defence than him making saves.

He can make good saves, his main problem is indecision, he just doesn't know whether to go for the ball or stay on his line, so he ends up doing neither.

He won't be a catastrophe but Toth definitely has won us some points by making spectacular stops. Given that we don't score many that has been important

Oh it's a disaster if Toth is injured.

He's so much better than Pears it's untrue.

Spoiler: he isn't.

However, the hope is that our back 3/5 can perform how they did last night, where an empty tube of Pringles would have kept a clean sheet.

I don't get your Spoiler. Pears is a professional goal-keeper. What he has to prove is that he is worthy of the title. Personally, I don't think he will, but I hope he does.

I mean, a basic level of competence would probably be a baseline requirement?

Yet to see it from him - and he was our first choice for an extended period of time.

I seem to remember Pears coming in when Kaminski got injured and actually having a run of two or three games where he looked decent - there was a bit of a 'maybe he's not as bad as all that' on here.

He does worry me long term in that he's always got a howler in him, but for a game or two we're probably ok. If Toth is out for more than that then I'd want to bring in an experienced freebee, even if we rotate between them to keep the pressure off Pears, but there aren't that many available that would get a work permit. 37 year olds Rui Patricio and Fraser Forster probably aren't an upgrade on Pears at this point.

Lots of games  between now and the January transfer window, lets hope the injury isn't bad.

As far as back up goalies go, Pears isn't too bad. I'm pleased he's still here if Toth is out for an extended period. Pears is just one of those confidence players. He does have the basic skill set but the problem is in his head. When he's on form he's a Championship level goalkeeper, but as soon as something goes wrong the indecision is there for all to see and he becomes woefully inadequate. I think it was David James who once said all good goalkeepers are a bit weird. Its such a pressure position that it takes a very specific personality to instantly forget about a mistake you've made, and Pears just doesn't have that in him.

If his tail is up whilst Toth is out he'll do a job, however my biggest worry is, even taking mentality out of the equation, technically speaking Toth is just so much better. He's by far one of our most valuable players and regardless of Pears form or mindset, he'll be a downgrade. There have been fine margins in two of our recent wins where if Pears were in net, I don't think we'd have won.
