They didn't come for the manager there because we didn't have a manager, just Kean. These guys are coming to do a job for someone they presumably respect. Didn't Clough take John Roberts everywhere he went because he knew he was his man? Savage came to us because he wanted to play for Hughes. There must be loads of other examples. At the moment Lambert feels he needs allies and if they're low cost and relatively short term I don't see the problem

John McGovern it was Gumboots - but you're right, it doesn't matter who they played for, it's how good they are that counts.

Elliott ward in 3...2....1.......

Ward confirmed! 2 and a half year deal seems a bit long at 31 but happy we have more options at the back

Don't know much about him to be honest but if he gives us the same sort of value / service as 'oldies' like Kevin Moran, Tony Gale and Craig Short did (not suggesting he's in their class) then there'll be no complaints from me.

If you get a chance to Watch it Dennis, then you will see he is much better than Brown and Koita at least.

Ahhh....... I should have said I'd be surprised if he ISNT better technically than anyone else we've got (including Rhodes).

I remember seeing McGovern playing for Hartlepool as a young kid Den. He looked pretty average ability wise to me but Clough saw something in him. Attitude, mental strength etc. He took him everywhere he went and usually he captained the team.

Shearer wasn't the most technically gifted player either. He'd say that himself if you asked him.

Technically Shearer was brilliant wasn't he?

Anyway, my original post was a typo TS. I'm sure Graham will bring skills we don't have upfront.

Not for me, Marshall is OK there for now. An attack minded midfielder to direct the traffic is my no 1 target.

he has done ok there.. but i would still prefer him to be further up the pitch and a specialist r/b playing there, that said i genuinely think Lowe was a far better right back than midfielder , perhaps if and when he's fit he Lambert may try him there because i think he's lost faith in Henley

I agree about Lowe at right back but who knows when he'll be match fit given the amount of time he's been out injured.

Have to agree with that, a one and a half year deal would have seemed far more sensible, and extend it if he is a starter after that point. Ah well, I hope he proves a good signing for at least most of that contract.

Whe you think about it, what the hell does technically even mean in football? That you can prat around with a ball?

Give me brilliantly effective over technically brilliant any day.

Yeah me too. Quite a lot of top goal scorers over the years haven't been " gifted " but they could put the ball into the back of the net.

Shearer's technical ability was excellent. You can't score the number of goals he did, from the ranges and positions he did, without being able to strike and control a ball well. Sure not a Tugay or Benni McCarthy in his ball control, but was vastly better than the majority of players we have had since.

That side volley against Southampton, the way he struck a moving ball and countless brilliant free kicks he scored from tell me he had great technique. I don't remember Dennis Bergkamp being able to score free kicks like Shearer but obviously, he had great technique but was much less effective than Big Al.
